Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1983 volume:

M U I c Julie Lund, Debbie Stark, Hila Parrish, Karla Maynard, and Julie Addis have Open Arms. Kim Gose is having “Head Games. Music ... there are many kinds: jazz, reggae, funk, new-wave, pop, and country-western, to name a few. Music seems to be a significant aspect of every teen’s life. We hear music in the rec-room, at the Hangar, on our stereos, and in car radios. Many students are involved with some activity involving music, such as band, drill team, chorus, and spring musical. The theme of this year’s yearbook is Music.” So, sit back and listen” to some of our music! D. R. Foley announces chat “The Girl Is Mine. Susan McIntosh and Bev Garver are Juke Box Heroes. 3 Teresa Ring, Traci Brecht, Jana Svendson, and Julie Lund are '‘Ladies Of The 80's.' SENIOR SNAPS Brett Frost asks Evan Pratt, What About Me? 4 The Homecoming That Never Was Seniors are Out In Space.” Freshmen want to Blast 'em to the Stars.” This year, because of the teacher’s strike, the main activities of Homecoming were held in December; however, the classes still managed to build their class floats in the fall. The Freshman class won with their winning entry of New Kids on the Block.” The Junior class Shoots For The Stars. Sophomores claim they are Superior Outstanding Perfect Humans. 5 P.H.S. HOMCCOMIMG 1982 Sweet Time” forJanna and Mike: 1982 Homecoming Royalty. Julie Lund, Queen janna Svendson, 1st Attendant Debbie Stark, and Karla Maynard. 6 JourriELj Into Outside of being two months late, this year's Homecoming was different in other ways. Rather than in football season. Homecoming was held in basketball season. Another difference of this year’s Homecoming was the addition of Senior boys to the court. The king and queen of Homecoming this year was Mike Baker and Janna Svendsen. Other Senior boys on the court were Dave Holycross, 1st attendant, Mike Buske, Randy Cash, and Evan Pratt. The other Senior girls on the court were 1st attendant Debbie Stark, Julie Lund, and Karla Maynard. JUNIOR COURT MEMBERS — Kim Gose, Betsy Arnold. end Angi Bruce. 7 CLASS GAMES Freshmen Outrank All Others Night Life at P.H.S. Class Games. Senior Court members Get Closer for the t.p. race with Keith Connelly. Greg Wilson chugs lemonade for the Senior Class. 8 This year, class games were held in the Eveland Gym. The different activities were a lemonade chug, toilet paper race, spaghetti eating contest, and balloon race. The days preceeding Homecoming were filled with activities. The classes competed in Christmas tree decorating, as well as the dress up days, including physical day, hat day, orange and black day, tie day, and punk day. Freshmen were Winning” during class games. Terri Sweet, Darin Miller is Working For The Weekend” during the spaghetti eating Freshman class Pres., receives her class trophy from King contest. Baker and Queen Svendson. 9 Both Boys and Girls Win Their Homecoming Games The Girls' Basketball team Comes Together. Homecoming, 1982, was really a switch. It was difficult, at first, to watch the Homecoming game in the gym. After all, we had always had a football homecoming. Still, we did adapt. The environment must have helped: we beat Taylorville 58-55. Then, too, the girls got to really participate in this year’s homecoming. The girl's basketball team won their game, a squeaker, on Thursday night before the boy's game on Friday. 10 Mike Buske will get this shot One Way Or Another. 1983 Homecoming Court Angi Bruce deals with Pressure.” Rob Smithson, Gail Kienest, Brett Frost, and Julie Land have Big Fun” at the Homecoming Dance. 12 Teachers Arc Hard at Work A well known and favorite English teacher at Paris High School retired this year. Mrs. Theodorsa Day graduated from Eastern 111. State Teachers’ College in 1945. She taught English and sponsored the yearbook and the newspaper in Champaign from 1945-1948. Mrs. Day then returned to the University of Illinois to receive her M.A. degree. In 1948, she returned to Paris to teach English, sponsor Tiger Tales and the Junior Art League. During 1958-15163 she taught second grade and served as principal of Vermilion Grade School. Mrs. Day returned in 1963 to teach English. She was chairman of the English Department and served on a variety of curriculum committees. Mrs. Day is pictured here with one of her grandchildren; she now has time to enjoy them. Even though her classroom is occupied by another teacher, Mrs. Day’s English classes will not be forgotten. PHS Principals Are the “Macho Men” Mr. Buchanan and Mr. McNary are familiar faces to students at P.H.S. Both gentlemen usually find time to banter with students in the hallway between classes or before and after school. The voices have become familiar, too. Most of us can vividly recall hearing Take off that hat!” boom down the hallway. Being the principal and assistant principal wouldn't be easy jobs, but we think Mr. Buchanan and Mr. McNary have done good jobs. Mr. Buchanan poses for the camera. 24 Mr. McNary is hard at work! They didn't rake in millions from magazine sales. But their awesome” devotion and spirit prevails. Hoping the time 'til they're seniors won't be long. The juniors keep on rockin' and singin' their song. The juniors have had a very active year. Although magazine sales didn't bring in as much money as was hoped, the annual Junior — Senior prom turned out to be a success. This was also a year of beginnings and endings for the juniors. They reluctantly said goodbye to the always exciting days of P.E., but were very happy to accept the responsibility that goes along with being upperclassmen. Each year the list of names on the Honor Roll from the class of '84 increases. Class spirit and involvement in school activities is also increasing. The juniors were successful this year and hope to carry this success into the following year. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Stephanie Schneider. Treasurer; Lori Berry, President; Emily Blumthal. So with high hopes for the future and the goals for which they strive. The Freshmen at Paris high are keeping the spirit alive. The Freshmen got off to a very good start at Paris High School. During the belated Homecoming Spirit Week, they took first place in the competition between classes. From electing class leaders early in the year to participating in the many activities P.H.S. offers, the Freshmen have really gotten involved. The French Club members spent the rest of the evening visiting a number of different homes as they enjoyed a progressive dinner. In March, French students participated in the Foreign Language Festival with the Spanish and Latin Clubs. Waiting their own French version of Peter Pan, they spent two evenings a week practicing and working on props. Each year, the French Club tries to add new activities. The Paris High School Library was renamed The Fenton English Library and Media Center as a remembrance of Mr. English's long dedication and loyalty. His generous support through a trust fund has helped many students to further their education. character. Eligibility is open to students in the 11th and 12th grades. Students do not apply for membership; they are selected by a faculty council composed of the principal, Mrs. Addis, Mrs. Badertscher, Mrs. Kloker, Mr. Eggleston, Mr. Giesler, and Mr. Sabens. There are no number restrictions set by the National Council, and this year forty students were selected for membership. Paris Chapter of the National Honor Society requires a junior to have a 4.6 grade point average and seniors to have a 4.4 grade point average before the student is even considered for membership. Mrs. Addis is to be rewarded for her fine work towards the National Honor Society. Future Homemakers of America Future Homemakers of America emphasizes consumer homemaking education. But that is not all that F.H.A. is about. The club offers friendship, involvement, recreation, and growth for its members. At Paris High School one way the home economics classes get involved is by electing officers. F.H.A. Presidents Rhonda Silverman. Lori Russell, and Brenda Nicholson have worked very hard to make this year profitable as well as enjoyable. Moneymaking events have included bake sales and candy bar sales. During National F.H.A. Week the group sold valo-grams. Since the club members have raised quite a lot of money, they decided to reward themselves by taking a trip to Six Flags. 1st Row: Lome Kelley. The Future Farmers of America at Paris High School consists of all members, which are 14% of the enrollment of the total student body. The Paris Chapter is the fourth largest chapter of approximately 458 chapters in the State of Illinois. In the Program of Activities they are rated nineteenth in the state. Each member is enrolled in an agricultural class, whether it be Horticulture, Ag. Mechanics, or Ag. Orientation. The complete ag. program and FFA organization have greatly increased the leadership qualities of each and every member. Through Parliamentary Procedure and classroom participation, the students are able to lead discussions and better associate with our community, fellow FFA members, and classmates. Through FFA activities the committee chairman and committee members learn responsibility by having to meet deadlines and fulfill their job to their best ability. Through Supervised Occupational Experience Programs FFA members have a great responsibility of deciding on money making projects. Whether a student makes money or loses money is often left up to the student’s decision. The involvement of the students does not stop within the school day. Often students are active leaders in community activities such as 4-H Federation officers, Community Nurse members, and even Section FFA officers. Vocational skills that are learned in the agricultural program go far beyond book learning. Through contests and other involvement, they apply techniques that were learned. This gives them first hand experience needed in their future development. 101 FFA’ers Work All Year Long Tracie, Deena, Lisa, and Dana at Christnan Tourney Ban’s hair must be perfect. They work at least two to three hours in the afternoon or morning. They must maintain passing grades to stay on the program. Office Occupations consists of on the job training for seniors in office-type work. Students are placed according to their interests and background. They work in a job a few hours each day. Students must enroll either in office procedures or secretarial procedures. They gain training in electronic calculators, filing, duplicating, shorthand, and typing. 108 Home Economics Related Occupations or HERO gives students an opportunity to experience the working field. Most work in restaurants or similar areas. HERO provides opportunities for self-development and preparation for family and community living and for employment. It also strengthens the function of the family as a basic unit of society. The biggest reason for HERO is to develop interest in home economics careers and to become aware of the multiple roles of men and women in today’s society. Students work mostly during regular school hours, but they also have heavy class loads. Bill Delashmit was the Apollo Conference champion in the 155 pound division while Rick Young was the Apollo champ in the 132 pound class. I remember the Catlin frosh-soph tournament where we took only six boys to compete and brought home three medals,” Queer said. That says a lot about the future of the sport here. I will also always remember our final home match where, for the first time in history, no Paris wrestler was pinned. Bryan Brooks became the first four-year letterman for the PHS wrestling team, ending this season of competition in the 145 pound class with all-5 record, three of those losses to state qualifiers. It's highly improbable — but hardly impossible for eight to think as one But somehow we pull it off, and show them how it's done. Lately we’ve been struggling to give more than we take and someday they will notice — it'll be a tragic mistake. We worked so hard this summer to make our dreams come true The time, the patience, the laughter and tears and magically we came through! But now it doesn't matter; there are no goals left to set” what if the girls before us used this precedent? They opened up the door for us and we had to fill their shoes But now we have all we want. There's nothing left to lose.” Think of how it might have been if they hadn't paved the way we'd be just another town from some forgotten place. I guess the same is true with music. We recall songs we especially like, but all others blend into the background. Hopefully, through this year’s yearbook, we have brought the year and the music into focus. Years from now, you can look at 1983 and remember the songs and the school year. 1983 ARENA STAFF — Editor: Shelley Johns. Class Editors: Hila Parrish, Jean Bruner, Liz Tracht.
