Popular music reflects the emotions of Americans through the years. During the war, song writers expressed the loneliness of thousands separated by the conflict; now that the fighting men are returning home from the battlefields of the world, songs are lighter and more cheerful. Who is more familiar with the latest hits than the youth of America and especially the students of Paris High School? From September through May they are singing their way through a maze of studies. Current songs have been tied in with the various school activities of the seasons. It is hoped that this book will not only serve as a record of school life at Paris High, but also as a memory book of songs through the seasons. OLD TUNES SARA TEASDALE As the waves of perfume, heliotrope, rose, Float in the garden when no wind blows, Come to us, go from us, whence no one knows, So the old tunes float in my mind, And go from me leaving no trace behind, Like the fragrance born in the hush of the wind. But in the instant the airs remain I know the laughter and the pain Of times that will not come again. I try to catch at many a tune Like petals of light fallen from the moon, Broken and bright, on a dark lagoon, But they float away—for who can hold Youth, or perfume, or the moon's gold?
