B Xlith an acute shortage ol high school competition, this year's edition of the '1'.1'l.S. baseball squad was forced. for the most part, to tangle with the power-laden service teams that are in the Tucson vicinity. Only six scholas- tic games were scheduled, with three ditlierent schools, Mesa. North lfhoenix and Phoenix Union. the two capitol city teams. VYe're not braggin'. but we do mean to tell you that our boys did mighty well-yes sir-mighty well. liig guns for the Badger ottensive were Pete l'ullen and blerry Dodson, junior backstop. ln the first three scholas- tie games they boasted a .600 average. joe Trujillo, left fielder, eame through in the pinehes, and was responsible for bringing in a number of important runs. Our baseball season got underway Saturday, March 15, when the Badgers tangled with the Consolidated Liberators and eame out on the short end of a 2-1 score. Subsequent games with the Liberators and the Marana Hosses left the Badg- ers in the hole as far as wins are concerned, but put them Hank in excellent condition for their Class :X high school tilts. The first of these occurred April 1, when the veteran southpaw Pete l.'ul1en fooled Phoenix Union's Coyotes into a 7-1 loss by holding them to three hits, backed by the expert ballhandling of his teammates. This proved merely a warm-up for .l'ete as the following 'l'hursday the Badgers blasted out a 10-0 shutout against the Mesa jackrabbits, with the intrepid hurler allowing but one hit and fanning al- most all eomers. North Phoenix's Mustangs became the third prep team to fall before the Badgers' onslaught. Clubbing out 15 well-hunched hits behind the two-hit hurling of Lowell llailey, they whitewashed the Mustangs 16 to 0 here -Xpril S. Bailey, a junior, Lefty Pete Pullen in Action ,nonw-
