Sept. l7. 1943 TUCSKJX l3. l'llUliNlX 6. lYow! ln their Baptism under fire. our boys surprised everyone hy defeating the Coyotes ll-6 in the season opener at Phoenix. Two hundred of us piled into cars of all sizes. shapes and conditions and streamed to the capitol city for the gala occasiong gasoline seemed to he no problem. In the tirst two mimues of play. llatiste electritied us with a heautiful 30-yard dash to the Phoenix 8-yard line. from which little 'fliggsn l.ent took the lmall over two plays later. Dominating the play in the lirst half. we again scored in the second quarter. Again it was llatiste. dodging and squirming his 66 yards to pay-dirt. Gott made good the extra point. 4 The Coyotes came hack in the second half to score their lone touchdown. Batiste. Tackett. Carrillo, and liickley were out- standing. the Sept. 24. lf?-l3-,Nxt unexpected cloudlmurst prevented home-town fans from getting' their tirst look at their team. The rain failed to dampen their hopes at seeing the game. many lmraring the rain till long after the scheduled game- timci lt was announced the game would he played at a later date. tlct. l. lf?43-Tucson 27. St. Klary's 6. .Xt long last. Tucson got to see its '43 team in action. ln a rather sloppy game, Tucson whipped the St. Nlary's linights 27-0 lmefore a capac- ity crowd of footlmall-hungry fans. St. Nlary's gave us quite a nightmare in the hrst half, scoring early in the hrst quarter and pushing our lioys around quite a lmit till Larry Klctjuade caught a pass in the second period in the end zone to give us a slim 7-o margin at half-time. tfontinued on page tw-lj Mr, Greer.
