During our high school years he has willingly devoted much of his time supervising our activities and helping us to function as a class. His tireless efforts in our behalf have often made the difference between the success and failure of class projects. Although his patience must have been sorely taxed at times, Mr. Crimes was always there with a word of encouragement or advice. He has helped to make these past years enjoyable and memorable in our lives. We are extremely proud to have had Mr. Grimes as our class advisor. The class of 1963 wishes to extend to Mr. Crimes its appreciation and thanks for a job well done. GEORGETTA LOUISE ALCOTT ROBERT ERIC AXELSON 60l- Pennxylrania Avenue 52l fmronvy Avenue Palmyra. We were heading back to school as the summer of '59 came to an end. We were anxious to go back, because in our opinibn we were now Cream of the Crop of the after- noon session. Along with the upper classmen we jumped into sports. We attended the football games and cheered our team to a season of 5 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. In our own frosh football, we came through with a record of 2 wins, If losses, and 2 ties. Our coach was Mr. Iannucci and three of our best players were J. Hartman, R. Palme, and T, Belford. The girl's hockey team under the coaching of Miss Rosa Rapp came through with a record of 2 wins, 8 losses and 3 ties. ln basketball, while we cheered our Varsity to 8 wins and I4 defeats, our frosh under the coaching of Mr. Vowler, won 3 and lost 8, with J. Headman, D. Coursen. P. Santa Maria, and P. Selvaggi doing some of the best playing. With the spring came baseball and our frosh had l win, and 8 losses. In this sport J. Headman, E. Moore, J. Adelizzi, H. Palme, and J. Stiles did their best to help the team come out with a better record. Again Mr. Vowlcr was the coach. We had our own Student Council this year in the after- YEAR - 1959-1960 noon session. The freshmen who represented us were K. Hunter, C. Harker, M. Snow, G. Robinson, T. Bel- lord. and S. Nlclllotten. Something new was presented this year. An operetta entitled 'ttln the Range. Although it was presented by both senior and junior high school, the stars were all the class of '63, We saw L. Deitz, A. Frank, B. Smith, J. Cooper, S. Garcia, and J. Petrie do some very good acting as some of the stars. When the other classes elected ofhcers, we were not left out. We elected Mr. Crimes as our class advisor, and our officers were President-P. Santa Maria, Vice-Presi- dent--PM. Hcadman, Secretary-G. Robinson, Treasurer --S. Rappaport, and Historian--S. Kelly. Representa- tives to the Student Council were K. Hunter, T. Moore, ll. Toal, and tf. Relar. As the days grew warmer, we saw N. Proscheck picked as one of next year's Varsity cheerleaders. K. Hunter and H. Weeks were picked as substitutes and also as JV cheerleaders. ti. Belar and S. M4-Glotten joined them on the JV squad. School soon came to a close, and we were all anxiously waiting for it to do so. We couldn't wait to go places, do things. and meet new people. But, when we were most anxious for was to come back the following year as Sophornores. SOPHOMORE YEAR - 1960-1961 Q It was the fall of '60 and we were returning as Sopho- more-s to school. We were experiencing a new thrill of being in the morning session. No thrill, however, could have kept us from entering into the spirit of the football games. We had a terrific season of 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie, with T. Belford, D. Tnal, T. Moore, and B. Palme playing Varsity. We were proud to see T. Belford make All-County Team. We had something new this year. A Homecoming Day was given on Thanksgiving. All who were there saw lovely Anna Sacca chosen as Homecoming queen with our own pretty Marita Lehotsky as the Sophomore rep- resentative. In hockey we had a record of 1 win, and 10 losses with P. Bowen representing our class by playing Var- sity. Quite a few Sophomore girls joined the ,IV squad. ln basketball, .l. Headman and P. Santa Maria joined the varsity team while .l. Stiles, B. Nece, D. Coursen, l'. Selva,-:gi and M. Headman played .lV. In baseball, we had a good season, and saw J. Head- man, P. Santa Maria, B. Nece, P. Selvaggi, and .l. Ade- lizzi supporting our class. With the help of Mr. Grimes, we put on a Roaring Twenties Dance in the early spring, which was enjoyed by all who attended. ln the warm weather we saw N. Proscheck return as a varsity cheerleader along with K. Hunter, E. Weeks, and S. Mcfllotten. We also saw M. Lehotsky, D. Hillman and E. Elder join our .lV squad. With the year coming near an end, the new oflicers elected were D. Toal-Presidentg M. Headman-Vice President, C. Belar-Secretaryg E. Moore-Treasurer and S. Kelly-Historian. For Student Council, we elected T. Moore, P. Santa Maria, K. Hunter, J. Hires, and M. Snow to represent our class. We were happy to see our summer come, yet we knew that our uext year at PHS would be just as happy and educational as this one. JUNIOR YEAR - Summer passed before we knew it, and we found our- selves entering P.H.S. as Juniors. We were happy to be introduced to our new principal, Mr. Taylor Kirby. No sooner were we back when we entered into the spirit of our football games. With a 5-4 record we saw D. Toal, T. Moore, T. Belford, O. Meekins, and G. Dickinson play their best. This year proved successful for T. Belford as he again was picked for All-County. Although our hockey team didn't have a very successful season, we saw D. Hillman, P. Lippencott, P. Bowen, and C. Braidwood play their best in the games. In basketball, J. Headman, P. Santa Maria, and P. Sel- vaggi represented our class on the varsity team and bhelped us hold our heads high through the season, while B. Nece, D. Coursen, and T. Belford played on JV. We presented our Junior Talent Show entitled 'The .lack Spaar Show. D. Coursen was the great announcer and we showed our viewers that our class had some tre- mendous talent!! Spring came, and with it came the Jr.-Sr. Banquet and 1961-1962 the prom. All who attended the Jr.-Sr. Banquet had an enjoyable time, and we thought the seniors did a won- derful job. The Prom entitled Tropical Sunset was a great success. Everyone danced among the palm trees and grass huts and were happy to see D. Toal and J. Gilbert accept the thrones of Prince and Princess. As the days passed we saw K. Hunter, N. Proscheck, E. Weeks, and S. Mcfllotten chosen as cheerleaders for the following year. We knew the next year would be good when the of- ficers for our senior year were elected. D. T0al-Presi- dentg J. Hires-Vice-President, C. Belar-Secretaryg E. Moore-Treasurerg and S. Kelly-Historian. For Student Council, we elected T- Moore, K. Hunter, P. Santa Maria. J. Headman, J. Hires, B. Smith, C. Braidwood, D .Cour- sen, C. Harker, M. Snow, S. McClottten and J. Lauber. As the year came to a close, we couldn't help but won- der if our senior year would be as all predicted. But we knew we had all summer to wonder about it. SENIOR YEAR - 1962-1963 Our summer passed before we realized it and we were back at PHS as Seniors. This was a thrill we had been dreaming of since we started high school as freshmen. But even on the first day we were experiencing a new thing. We were back on full sessions, and it was hard' to get used to all our new hours. Our new gym, cafeteria, and rooms looked better than ever. Football season came and we couldn't wait to get into the spirit of it. With a great football Season D. Toal, G. Dickinson, T. Belford, 0. Meekins, C. Wallace, M. Head- man, J. Headman, V. Melograno, J. Coens, R. Bates, R. Palme, and D. Fish represented our class and kept the scores high while the cheering heard from the stands showed our great school spirit. This year, we again gave our alumni a homecoming. Pretty P. Mebs was elected as queen of the Homecoming, while K. Hunter and M. Lehotsky were her senior attendants. Moods in Emerald was the theme of the 'winter formal, and it was a great success. The formal was held in our new cafeteria and we were proud to show everyone how nice it could be decorated. We had a terrific basketball team this year. J. Head- man, P. Selvaggi, D. Coursen, B. Nece, P. Santa Maria, and T. Heliger howed some great ability on giving us a record that we will be proud of for a long time to come. T.V. Time, our senior talent show proved that we hadn't lost any talent, in a year's time, but had gained some. I. Petrie and S. Scanlan were the emcees, and led us through many acts that will be hard to forget. Our Senior class play, The Mouse that Roared was a great success! As far as talent goes, our class has shown everyone we can't be outdone. The senior trip, which we had been waiting for since the beginning of our freshman year was even more fun than we had dreamed. With more pep than we knew we had, and lack of sleep, we experienced one of the great- est thrills of our high school days. Now as we, the class of '63 go on our separate ways, after Commencement, we have our happy memories along with our sad ones to remind us of our four great years at P.H.S. Pep rallies, football and basketball games, half-sessions, new gym, teachers, and friends will only be a past memory, but we will have many years in the future in which we will strive to make our communities, state and country a better one for all to live in. Let the Class of Nineteen hundred and sixty-three be long re- membered in the years to come. IUST FUR P. STUDENT COUNCIL The Palmyra High School Student Council is a representative body of students from the different classes under the guidance of its advisor, Mr. Klevan. It is the student governing hody of the school. The Student Council works to improve rela- tions ha-tween students and the faculty and ad- ministration. Through its committees, and as a whole. the Student Council provided many fm useful services to the school. These included the installation of a monitor system in the halls, the delivery of the teachers' newspapers each morning before school, the supervision of elections of the class officers and Student Coun- eil memhcrs each spring, and many social activi- ties. During the school year many members attended state-wide and regional conferences such as the 'Rutgers University conference where they traded ideas for improving the school with rep- resentatives of other high schools. TILLICUM Rushing to meet their deadline the industrious staff of the 1963 'l'illicum worked hard to compile an account of the events of the past year at P.H.S. These cliiorts were co-ordinated under thc hands of our cap- able and somctimcs frantic co-editors, Carol Harker and Torn Nloorc. The rlllllililllll stall consists entirely of seniors chosen on their journalistic ability and their interest in the yearbook, Under the direction of our advisors, Miss Margaret johnson, and Miss Dorothy Hutchinson, the staff spent many long hours writing biographies and captions, taking pictures, laying-out the pages, and finally typing and proofreading the final copy. As the year slips quickly by, we, thc staff of the I963 Tillicum hope that this book will bring to life again all the memories and good times of our high school years. BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE Each year several students from Palmyra High School are privileged to attend Boys' State, Girls' State, and Girls' Citizenship Insti- tute. These activities, which are sponsored by the American Legion, afford the students an opportunity to learn the principles of American government and good citizenship. Boys' State is held at Rutgers University, while Girls' State and Girls' Citizenship Institute are held at Douglass College. Palmyra High is one of the few schools for- tunate enough to have a Dance Band, The band, reformed in recent years under the di- rection of Mr. Konefsky, has a complete dance orchestration. The sweet melodies of the saxo- phones, the blazing brass, and the swinging bass combine to give Palmyra High students an idea of what the era of the Great Bands was like. DANCE BAND Seated: N. During the past few years Palmyra occupied the bottom rung of the lad- der in county basketball. But with a new gym- nasium and a group of boys who were willing to play team basketball, the team'turned the tables on many of their opponents and won their share of games. The Pals led by seniors Headman, Selvaggi, Fish. Santa Maria, Coursen, Nece, and Heliger, rolled up a commendable 7-1 record on their home court. The fine ball handling of Headman and the scoring of Selvaggi and Fish led the team to thrilling victories over Lenape, Mt. Holly, Moorestown, and Riverside. The playing of Coursen, Nece, Santa Maria, and Heliger helped the team considerably when they needed it. The new gym increased the spirit of the Pal- myra rooters, and the feeling of playing before their fans on their own court inspired the play- crs to produce some of the best basketball in the county. By defeating Mt. Holly in the game, Palmyra finished in second place in the league, and was ready to enter the South Jersey Group III Tournaments. The junior varsity under the guidance of Mr. Stewart Harkness brought home another win- ning season. The team lacked height but made up for it with extra hustle and aggressiveness. 1. -i Phil Santa Maria Pete Selvaggi Jay Headman Bob Nece Don Coursen - --,-- f--- - - Tom Heliger Haddonfield ...... ........ 3 4 Edgewood ....... ........ 5 6 Sterling ........ ........ 5 1 Steinert ........... ......,. 5 8 Burlington .,..... ........ 5 4 Moorcstown .............. ........ 3 0 No. Burlington .................. 45 Lenape ..................... ........ 5 0 Levittown .......... ........ 6 2 Riverside ..... ........ 4 8 OPP. With Bumgarner, Bauer, Edmunds, Shea and Dugan leading the way, the ,lV's heat most of their keenest rivals. Palmyra fans enjoyed watching pint-sized Michael Bauer out- maneuver most of his taller opponents. The fine shooting of Dugan and Bumgarner and the rebounding work of Shea and Edmunds were a great asset to the team. The team was a young one and laeked experience: but after com- pleting the year. all felt that great progress had been made. lt, can be assured that our efforts this year will be well rewarded. We feel this is flue to the efforts of lVlr. Curtis, our 1-oaeh, who made last year his last of many loyal and r-onseientious years as the travk l'0Lli'll. Although the tean1 did not make the play-offs, their presence and determination on the diamond was discovered by the other league teams.
