Their devotion to their work and their willingness to make good citizens out of their students have made an im- pression of some kind on everyone of us. We feel that Mrs. Gray is an excellent example of :1 dedicated teacher. She has served on the P. H. S. faculty in the Business Education Department and as the year- book and newspaper advisor for two years. In this relatively short time, our school :ind stu- dent body has benefited greatly from her efforts to make this a place of better education. Therefore, as a token of our appreciation of her whose loyalty and interest are ours, whose friendship is genuine, whose patience is end- less, whose humor is loved, and whose service and loyalty are :in inspiration, we dedicate this our 1968 annual. A. Dewitt Haroujjf A dminislrative Head Princzpal Russell Hicks was the high school principal for the 1967-68 school year. Added to his many responsibilities as principal, Mr. Hicks taught driver's education to the soph- omores and freshmen, and coached basket- ball. F'ARlVlER'S CO-OP COMPANY PALMYRA 983-5320 The yearbook is a document published from one year to the next, recording activities of major importance to you as students. It is a chronicle which you can turn to five, ten, fifteen, or twenty years from now and reflect on these activities with sadness or fondness, depending a great deal on the emotion they bring to mind. The yearbook is an important document in another aspect as it marks a major stone in life, particularly for the seniors. This milestone, or stepping off place, for some will mean college, for others marriage, and for still others a job which will involve their time and energy for the rest of their lives. It is here that I challenge you to do the very best you are capable of doing and to always hold your head high. You have this responsibility, to yourself, your family, your community and your school, and if you need to reflect, open your annual to page-- and remember all the promises you made then. 3 FACULTY '68' As a new Pep Club sponsor, OMA ENO, also keeps busy as the F. I-LA. adviser and home economics in- structor. Mrs. Eno has a B. S. degree from the University of Nebraska. LEADERS GARAGE 3'6 BENNET 782-2405 , The 1967 football season was one of which the Panthers could be proud. The team did not finish the season with a winning record, but it did finish as a team that had reached football maturity. The Panthers had their prob- lems against Sterling, Talmage, Barneston and Elm- wood, but three of these four teams were ranked among the better football teams in the state. Although the team lost to these ball clubs and also to Murdock and Brock, it was given healing -wotmd comments by coaches who complimented the team as having one of the better de- fensive ball clubs they had played during the season. Other changes were special features in each issue, and the use of pictures, something never done before in this newspaper. In the fall of 1967, Ina Genuchi and Jean Beecham represented the PANTHER PRINT at the Nebraska High School Press Associa- tion Convention held on the East Campus, at the University of Nebraska. The girls learned how to construct a good school newspaper, and they were able to compare the P.P. with other school newspapers. Another change was the selling of subscriptions to finance the printing of pictures. Later, the paper was sent to everyone living in District' OR-1 once a month. MR. 'B's' l.G.A. HIGH TOUR EY There were 18 members in the Honor P-Club in the 1967-68 year. Every member has earned a letter in some sport. Earning a letter is the first requirement for gaining membership in this organization. The next and last requirement is that the members of the P-Club vote upon a person's gaining membership which requires a majority vote. The purpose of the Honor P-Club is to promote athletics in Palmyra High School. The P-Club sponsored the Mustang junior High Basketball and Volleyball Tournament which was held on February 19, 21, and 22 of 1968. The P-Club members performed such duties as hosting the teams competing in the tournament, running the scoreboard, and sweeping the floor. 1 P 5 :'-f 1 D ii P-Club Officers: Bruce Sturdy, Treasurerg Bob Beecham, Presidentg Ron E1-cstrum, Vice Presidentg Steve Randall, Sec- retaryg Bill Genuchi, News Reporter. At any Palmyra High game one could see the Pep Club there to support the team. This support was also seen at out-of- town games. Along with the team's winnings, the Pep Club won the Mustang Conference Award for the Best Pep Club. This is the second year the award has been given to Palmyra. Pep rallies were a feature of the pre -game activities. When you heard the pep band, you knew it was time for another rally. Humorous skits were also given by the student body and cheerleaders. Leading the cheering, the Pep Club gave the Panthers the support, spirit, and determination to succeed. There were three changes in the Pep Club. The new constitu- tion was put into effect along with a dernerit system. lvirs. Oma Eno and Miss jan Williams undertook the new job of sponsoring the organization. The Pep Club supported the volleyball team as well as the basketball team. Many changes may be seen in the Pep Club, new faces, new leaders, and new sponsors, but the spirit will never die. Five Assem- blies were presented this year to add to the educational op- portunity of each student. On October 11, Mr. Charles Ramsden demonstrated some of his unique musical inventions. With the aid of Mary Helen Bremer, he showed how a simple rubber band, exposed to ur- anium, could be transformed into a lively musical instru- ment. Mr. Ramsden has also invented a steel guitar that pro- duces atomic music. This type of music closely resembles the psychedelic music of today. Also in October, Mr. joe Kilgore entertained the students and faculty with a talk about his experiences in the Vietnam war. He showed slides from the Delta region around the Sai- gon River where he was stationed. Hand-carved marioncttes, in a realistic presentation of The Story of Christopher Columbus was provided for the students by Mr. john Conrad on November 2. With only a few assis- tants to help with the mechanical part of the show, he cap- tivated the audience with his excellent vocal capacities. Micki the almost human chimp came to our school on March 27. His trainer, Merle Snyder, presented him in a clever, entertaining, and educational program. Mr. Snyder dressed Micki in chi1dren's clothes, had him eat his break- fast and do amazing acrobatic feats. On April 24, Mr. Eddie Cole presented a fascinating tram- poline and physical fitness program. Several students parti- cipated in the programg they played Spaceball and helped add to the enjoyment of the program. For the twenty-six seniors in the graduating class of 1968, commencement exercises on May 15, signified the beginning of their acceptance of their roles as leaders in society. Rev. Richard Busk, pastor of the Palmyra Pres- byterian Church, delivered the invocation and benediction. Barbara Wilson and Phyllis Randall, as saluta- torian and valedictorian, respectively, greeted and thanked the assembled friends and relatives of the graduated, which numbered over 1000. Dr. Keith Prichard, associate professor of sociology at the University of Nebraska, guest speaker, delivered a very appropriate speech entitled, Education in a Crisis-Ridden World . Mary Bremer, Barbara Wilson, and Phyllis Randall were honored as being in the top ten percent of their class. Hilda Lovercheck re- ceived the S250 SBA Scholarship. Vicky Dickmeyer was the alternate. Sunday, May 12, Baccalaureate exercises were held at the Palmyra High School Gymnasium. Father Edward jaworowski, priest at St. Leo's Church in Palmyra, delivered the sermon, The Young American Vision of the Young American Dream. Dr. William Bavis, pastor of the Com- munity Church in Bennet, delivered the invo- cation and benediction. Now that it has come, we cannot l help but feel that we are not really big seniors, invincible in our endeavors, but actually small beings in a tremen- dously complex world. As we look back on the road which we have traveled in high school, we feel sad that we will be leaving some of our best friends behind. Yet we are glad that the long road to graduation has finally been traveled. ' Our backward glances also reveal the people who made our journey a little easier, our parents, teachers, and friends. These are the people to whom we will be eternally grateful. The road also has many rough parts. These are the losses and disappointments. The road also has had its smooth parts, the victories and moments of great happiness. We see the football games, the dances and proms, and wish that we could take them with us in our future travels up the road. Graduation only represents an intersection in the road of education. The road ahead will be filled with many more pitfalls and rough stretches, but there is a place where we can stop from time to time to gain strength and conviction for our contin- uing journey. This place is the church. where our was-ri . .f . f Q ,M .. hopes and prayers may be expressed in time of need and in time of distress. Our future journey up the road must be toward goals that are far enough away so that the realization of these goals will mean greater satisfaction. Now that we have graduated, we stand at the intersection of two roads. These are like the roads in Frost's poem, one is well trodden and one is grassy--one will be easier to travel, but it perhaps, will not reveal the satisfaction that is at the end of the rough journey. Let us set our steps on the grassey road. And if we do, will it not possibly make a difference?
