ws .. gi? 'g The Importance of Athletics in High School Some people say that athletics are stressed too much in high school but I disagree, and so does the man in the White House. The President recently re- viewed the results of physical fitness tests for high school students and he decided that the teenage segment of the nation is falling down on its push-ups - its stomach is dragging on the ground. So now in our high school systems across the country, there are new rugged standards set up for students, and by this I mean physical fitness tests. Extracurri- cular sports are also now becoming more popular with both students and their parents. These sports are said to create school spirit and a sense of responsibility in the students, and it gives the older set a feeling of being young again so they can forget the rheumatism that is doubling them over as the wall of fog rolls in over the bleachers. Football is the sport to which l am referring. This is the most popular of the locally played sports and it is the money-maker of all high school games. For the faculty it is a game of revenge. The little wiseacre in the classroom that made a smart remark is on the football team. The teacher can't hit him because he is protected by law, so instead, he iust comes to the game and with a fiendish grin watches the smart guy get massacred by a human wall of flesh. But, as our President says, sound mind and sound body are important. So when the tests roll around to you and you're sagging on the ground or dying on a chin-up bar, as your sadistic instructor looks on, remember that you're making your country stronger . . . gee!
