JAMICE HILTUNEN Silver MMVcrsary Queen Miss Kuthie Williams p. aim Beach Junior College, after twenty-five years of service and three temporary locations, celebrated its silver anniversary in 1958 on its permanent 114 acre campus in Lake Worth, Florida. if n the mid-depression days of the early 1950 ' s, County Super- intendent of Public Instruction, Joe A. Youngblood, and Mr. Howell L. Watkins, then supervising principal of Central Schools, conceived the idea of a junior college for the Palm Beaches. The plan crystallized when the first class was admitted in 1 933. n September of 1936, Dr. John I. Leonard succeeded Mr. Young- blood as County Superintendent and was named president of the college. After twenty-two years as president. Dr. Leonard retired in the fall of 1958. Dr. Harold C. Manor was chosen to succeed Dr. Leonard. Vl ' any silver and anniversary events— a luncheon, dinner, tea, and dance— honored the retiring president and the new president. These events reached a climax in the Silver Anniversary Convocation, which paid tribute to the late Mr. Youngblood and to Mr. Watkins as the founders of the college. This also saw the inauguration of Dr. Manor as the second president of Palm Beach Junior College. C he college anticipates a period of unprecedented growth, expan- sion, prosperity, and service under the guida nce of Dr. Manor. ENROLLMENT 1 he first location of Palm Beach Junior College was in what is now the science build- ing of Palm Beach High School. Jn 1947 the college moved to its second site at Morrison Field, now Palm Beach Air Force Base. There the students en- joyed dormitory life and made use of recreational facilities, in- cluding tennis courts, volleyball courts, and a swimming pool. JVl orrison Field was reactivated in 1951 and PBJC moved to its third temporary home in the city hall of the Town of Lake Park. 1 n September 1 956, on a 1 1 4-acre tract near Lake Os- borne, the first of five modern buildings was completed, and the doors were opened to the largest student body in PBJC history. President John I. Leon- ard had realized his dream of a permanent campus, and the college at last had a home of its very own. 16 wwwwm 936 931 938 o 939 -fi 9H0 X 0) ID Q. f9 l fvm l9 X t9H3 19 ? f94e a. o t9S0 9Sl 3 953 1155 9iy4 9 6 1 J3 93e p. The occasion was held in honor of his retirement as president of the College. Gifts were presented to him and his wife. A morning coffee honoring Mrs. Manor was given by the women of the faculty. Though we may wander far asunder Still you are by our side. Fond mem ' ries of friends Still linger on. You ' ll ever be our inspiration Long after we are gone. All our hearts are filled with gladness When we think of thee. Hail, Palm Beach Junior College! You shall immortal be. We saw a Ijeacon on the shore. It drew us with its flame. With eyes that sought an open door, With seeking minds we came. We found a fire that lit our own That kindled joy within our souls. And on a thousand vistas shone. That we might chart high goals. The various clubs and social organizations were in full swing, with the rush period for fraternities and sororities highlighting the No- vember activities. In early December Phi Rho Pi sponsored the all-school play, Pyg- malion. It was held in t he music room and played to sellout crowds at all performances. George Cranford and Sally Elberty performed the leading roles and were supported by an excellent cast. As the month lengthened, the long awaited Christmas holidays came closer to becoming a reality. During the final days of the pre-Christ- mas period the PBJC singers, under the direction of Miss Letha Madge Royce, presented several excellent programs both on campus and over the local television facilities to usher in the season. The final highlight of the winter at PBJC was the Christmas dance for students and alumni, at which those still attending JC had an opportunity to meet again their friends who had gone on to larger institutions. Following the holidays the students flocked back to school, eagerly awaiting the forthcoming exams and Spring. y-. Grads, present students, and faculty look forward to this annual event. L he Spring season at PBJC was ushered in with more beauty. Miss Sophomore was elected and Ruthie Williams reigned over the annual Phi Da Di dance as Phi Da Di Sweetheart. The dance, held in the student center on Valentine ' s Day, was the first of several dances held on campus during the spring. The Philo Arch Dance, Alpha Fi Coronation Ball, and the Artists and Mod- els Ball were other highlights of the spring season. The annual Phi Da Di play. The Rainmaker, was produced in Feb- ruary and was a tremendous success. PBJC ' s talented duo, George Cranford and Sally Elberty, again played the leading roles and were supported by ah excellent cast. The formation of the basketball program highlighted the spring series of PBJC intramural sports sponsored by the Physical Education department. At last the time which every sophomore on campus had long an- ticipated drew near. For the final time at PBJC they entered class- rooms to face exams and, that over, proceeded with last minute prep- arations for the graduation exercises. In early June the largest graduating class in Palm Beach Jr. College history received their diplomas and left the campus on which they had spent the previous two years. Some left to attend other schools, some to begin their life ' s work, some to begin family life, but all proud of Palm Beach Jr. College and the time they had spent here.
