With eyes that sought an open door. With seeking minds we came. We found a fire that lit our own, That kindled joy within our souls. And on a thousand vistas shone, That we might chart high goals. Bright flare of knowledge Torch of truth. Palm Beach Junior College Hail! Hail! Unfailing beacon of our youth. Hail! Alma Mater Hail! Freshmen SEPTEMBER A new term starts and with it a new life for many —and for others a continuation of education which began the year before. For all it means meet- ing new people, adjusting to the rapidly growing campus life, new and novel ideas, new classes, new books. It all seems so confusing and hectic during this first month of the school calendar. Purchasing beanies, obtaining car stickers, and filling out forms begin the procedure of registrati REGISTRATION BROUGHT EXCITEMENT T( DEGISTRATION DAY! Remember how everyone seemed to be dashing around? The freshmen were being oriented into campus life at PBJC. The first thing we did was to register our cars and receive an armful of school regula- tions and schedule forms. Then we were directed into the conference room. We grabbed a seat, desperately hunted for the pen we thought we had brought, and settled down to fill out the forms. Remember how monotonous it became writing the same information on nearly every form? With that finished, the clerk at the door handed us another form con- taining a number. He explained that an- other clerk would call us when the course counselor was ready to see us. While we were consulting the counselors we found them helpful and patient. Some two hours later we visited the finance officer and following a stop at the registrar ' s desk, our registration was completed. It was a frustrating day; yet, there was a certain anticipation for Mon- day, the first day of classes when we would meet new friends and embark on our college career. ' 4|; ; - i ever, conversation still crept in. . ONCE QUIET LIBRARY I ANTICIPATION MASKED FEAR An attentive freshman audience listens to words of wisdom presented at orientation. C ollowing the frustration of registration day, we found ourselves seated in the student center with newly-acquired friends. As we listened mindfully to Dr. Leonard ' s talk our hearts and minds were gathering knowledge that would stimulate our college life. The value of the orientation assembly would linger with us throughout the year and help guide us in important decisions. The student cen- ter was packed to the walls and chairs had to be placed in the patio to accommodate the large crowd. Students seated in the patio area faithfully and attentively listened to the speeches regardless of the hot sun ' s discomfort. Upon com- pletion of the formalities, the freshmen girls remained at the assembly to receive the an- nouncement of their big sister, who was to guide them through the first quarter of school. A s the girls left the student cen- ter, they proceeded to the new- ly-constructed music building where they were entertained at the Philo sponsored tea. The officers of Thi Del and Philo became better ac- quainted. The excitement of so many new faces and personalities combined made us look forward to a wonderful year. lasses finally begin. Students find themselves in a daze trying to find various lecture rooms and laboratories, but as the days move by a routine is established. To students enrolled in science, mathematics, and engineering the walk to and from the science building is a well-traveled one. Once you step into the modern labs you note the type of work done in them. ly icroscopes, slides, the odor of form- aldehyde, and skeleton samples are all aspects of the laboratory classes. I he slide rule, standard equipment for the engineering majors and for students enrolled in higher mathematics, is a fascinating instrument. I im and Joe seem quite content with ex- amining the day ' s comparative anatomy assignment. t acuity members at PBJC- are always willing to help and advise students whenever necessary. Here Miss AAaggard helps special student, Betty Smith. V K . ts! a y ■S break from the serious nature of classes was the annual all-college pool party held at Lido Pools. Splashing, jumping, diving, eating, chatting— all added to the enjoyable event. As the evening progressed the slight hint of rain blossomed into a violent storm. Most of the students headed for cover but the braver lot vk eathered the storm in the pool. A note of at- traction was the large number of JCers sporting zories, or as you might call them shower shoes. W- . • ' ' f ' EJii ■ i ' ■ V5it :3 im A faithful freshman always wears his bearile. Two events taking place which help students be- come better acquainted are the CO-ED CLUB PICNIC held early in the school year and the Sunday afternoon activities at Singer Island. Freshmen and sophomores gather at the beach and en- gage in water skiing, swim- ming, and learning the fun- damentals of aqua lung div- ing. Picnic lunches add to the interest of the day ' s festivities. Co-ed President Phyllis Meebold takes charge of serving. hHrf •iinli I ■■micw— i ' Mi — — — - - • - ' — SUNDAY AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES (jet Acquainted Dance I s sophomores and freshmen packed into the Ameri- i ' can Legion Home, we pushed our way to the dance floor where about all we could do was stand and sway. As the night got older and much warmer, the crowd quieted long enough for the floor show, which was en- joyed by all. Many visits were made to the refreshment table where cake and punch were in much demand. As the evening progressed tables had to be moved to pro- vide additional dancing area. After a few rounds of Bunny Hop and a case of Double Charlie Horse, we made our way to Merletto ' s, Sportsman ' s or some other quieter place to rock ' til two or three. 1 1 1 L 1 J iJ 1 . This was the scene of the intramural football, Softball, and tennis tournaments. One of the highlights of the program was the in- terfraternity football game between Phi Da Di and Alpha Fi. As the game progressed, student spectators cheered the teams on and anxiously awaited the results of the contest. Other ac- tivities taking place in the program were ten- nis, parallel bar and gymnastic work, and fenc- ing which was introduced to the girls this year. Perhaps then, more than ever, we are closer in spirit. Baccalaureate, recognition night, the sophomore break- - f 1 fast and graduation . . . and so the class of ' 58 leaves PBJC. The friends, the good times, the worrying and , studying of exams, the activities-these have been a ! part of our lives these past two years— and they have never seemed so dear as now. But we must go on to new horizons. Mrs. Esther Holt, sophomore class advisor, worked untiringly to make these graduation activities pleasant memories for the class of 1958. Her unselfish con- tributions are greatly appreciated by this graduation class. The stirring sermon and wise words of baccalaureate and graduation as well as recognition night, with its awards to outstanding sophomores, and the break- fast-are now history but will live in our memories for years to come.
