Mariner Of The Year At Pacifica, athletes with substantial talent in one sport are very common. But finding an athlete that excels in more than one sport is more difficult to come by. Joe Canatey fills this later category quite admira- bly. ln fact he ranks as one of the top multi-sport athletes in Mariner history. Therefore, he is the recipi- ent of l98O's Mariner of the Year award. Joe was chosen MVP of the league champsionship football team and was selected a first team all-league defensive back, leading the Mariners with three inter- ceptions. A two-way starter, Joe grabbed I2 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown as a split end. At times it seemed as if he never left the field. He shared the kickoff and placekicking duties with Dan Garrison for two years. Joe seemed never to make a mistakes he played very well under pressure. noted coach Bill Craven. He ran good routes and had good hands. As the starting leftfielder for Pacifica's baseball team, Joe is described by coach Myron Pines as a funny player. He's the type of player who'lI make a terrible baser- unning mistake and then come back to get a key hit to win the game. Joe batted third in the Mariner's lineup, the spot usually given to the team's best hitter. He's our pow- er, Pines said, refering to the fact that after ll games. Joe had two of Pacifica's five extra-base hits. Joe can be as good a baseball player as he wants to be, said Pines. lf he works at it he should be a good college player somewhere. Joe Canatsey

Mariner Cf The Year Injuries can often shorten an athIete's career or ham- per his performance to an extent that he cannot com- pete to the level he had earlier attained. Renee Reynolds has been able to overcome such ad- versity, and if it has affected her performance, no one is the wiser. Instead, Renee has distinguished herself as one of the top women athletes around, and thus has been named this year's Mariner of the Year. Renee's running ability has ranked her among the top ten in both cross country and track. She's a very talented athlete, offered coach George Varvas. She has definitely held her own not only in league, but outside of league. Despite a fall in the GGL's cross country finals, Renee placed third, behind two of the state's top runners. Her time of D235 for two miles was even more impressive in that it was run in the rain. The girls' team went unde- feated through her efforts. Renee meant all the differ- ence in the world to our team, Varvas said. She won the crucial races. ln track, Renee has set two school distance records. Her mile-time of 5:39 and two mile of D139 were excep- tional, especially considering that the times were achieved in March, well before she would hit her peak. Varvas describes her as the ideal worker. Renee is the type of athlete who says at the end of a workout, 'ls that all?' She gives IOOZ, and is always striving to im- prove.

Scott Krieger Most Worth Mariner Scott Krieger has been awarded the title of Most Worthy Mariner for his overall participation in school activities. Scott is a member of the senior class cabinet. He was also elected to the Presidential Classroom and spent a week in Wash- ington D.C. ln the classroom Scott has maintained a 3.6 grade average with such courses as Chemistry English and Fundamental Math Analy- sis. He will graduate as a sealbearer. Scott was also a member of the yearbook staff in his junior and senior years. He was staff photographer. He covered all the major sport events and major school activities. In his senior year in the boy s sport section. Scott is working part-time while in school to earn money for his summer trip to Europe. When he comes back he plans to attend Cal Poly Pomona where he will pursue a career in business. His involvement in civic activities however may indicate a future career in politics. Already he has shown his political capability by running his father s political campaign. Scott was responsible for doing Leadership, Scholarship, Total Contribution To School Programs Most Worth Mariner Lauren DeMarco has earned the title of Most Worthy Mariner for her fine participation in school activities In her Junior year Lauren was secretary of the Junior Class Cabinet She often did more than her share of the work Her enthusiasm and involvement in school activities earned her the title Mariner of the Month in the l978 l979 school year As junior class officer she organised most of the junior s GCLIVI ties She organized both the I979 and I98O Co eds and did an exceedingly good job in organizing the Junior Senior Prom Lauren was also a member of the Student League for two years She was a member of the Interact Club In Ilth grade and was Involved in both yearbook and journalism She has been able to maintain a 3 4 grade average while being in the honor s program Congratulations Lauren' Good luck in the futurel Lauren DeMarco O - in - u 1 - u - n - ' . . . . . . . , . . . . . . . v j
