My Tom Allen can be considered a living definition of ambi- tion. He has been a leader at Pacifica in nearly all facets of high school life. His greatly visible drive and success made him the obvious choice for recipient of the l98O Pete Younger Memorial Award and Scholarship. Tom began his role as a leader in his sophomore year when he quickly became a staff writer for El Corriente. This was also his first year as a member of Pacifica's Varsity Tennis Team and the California Scholastic Federation CCSFJ. By his iunior year, Tom had established himself as a well- known campus figure. He was elevated to the level of sports editor - and eventually assistant editor - of El Corriente. At the same time, Tom helped to lead the tennis team into its first-ever CIF competition. Towards the end of the year, Pacifica's CSF members elected Tom as their l979-l98O presi- dent. But it was in his senior year that Tom reached his highest level of high school accomplishment. He became editor-in- chief of El Corriente, and helped to develop what has been called the best newspaper staff in Pacifica's history, it was certainly one of the finest in the Garden Grove School Dis- trict. Early in the school year, Tom was nominated to the position of senior class secretary. Soon after followed his election as Mariner of the Month. In early March. Tom represented Pacifica in A Presiden- tial Classroom for Young Americans. Just prior to this event, he was recognized by his peers when he was elected Most Likely to Succeed by the Senior Class. Despite his many social activities, and the demands of being an honor student. Tom has still managed to maintain a 3.7 GPA. He will graduate as a seal bearer. Tom's accomplishments have not been limited to the high school level. He is co-chairperson of the Garden Grove Youth Commission as well as being involved in other civic activi- ties. Tom is also a well-seasoned backpacker. Next fall. Tom will attend the University of California. Riverside where he plans to major in administrative studies. He has already recieved a scholarship from the Elks club to aid in his education. With an unbeatable desire to achieve such as Tom's, he should need no luck in the future. But out of custom, let us say 'good luck' to Tom: he has our congratulations. Mariner Cf The Year Injuries can often shorten an athIete's career or ham- per his performance to an extent that he cannot com- pete to the level he had earlier attained. Renee Reynolds has been able to overcome such ad- versity, and if it has affected her performance, no one is the wiser. Instead, Renee has distinguished herself as one of the top women athletes around, and thus has been named this year's Mariner of the Year. Renee's running ability has ranked her among the top ten in both cross country and track. She's a very talented athlete, offered coach George Varvas. She has definitely held her own not only in league, but outside of league. Despite a fall in the GGL's cross country finals, Renee placed third, behind two of the state's top runners. Her time of D235 for two miles was even more impressive in that it was run in the rain. The girls' team went unde- feated through her efforts. Renee meant all the differ- ence in the world to our team, Varvas said. She won the crucial races. ln track, Renee has set two school distance records. Her mile-time of 5:39 and two mile of D139 were excep- tional, especially considering that the times were achieved in March, well before she would hit her peak. Varvas describes her as the ideal worker. Renee is the type of athlete who says at the end of a workout, 'ls that all?' She gives IOOZ, and is always striving to im- prove.
