ii! BIG BLUE BLITES LA QUINTA Pacifica showed some spectacular offense and superb defense to humble La Quinta in their league opener, 28-0. Tailback Ed Odin carried I5 times for l4l yards and two touchdowns as the offense piled up 336 total yards. Ahead only 7-0 at halftime, the Mariners showed no mercy in tht: second half as Mike Eaton sprinted 92 yards halfway through the third period to put Pacifica ahead 14-0. Odin scored his second touchdown minutes later, rambling 44 yards. Fullback Tony Flores capped the scoring with a 2 yard burst with 2:50 remaining. ! x AAU PACIFICA TH RASH ES WESTERN The Mariners opened up the l978 season with a convincing 29-0 victory over Western High. The Pacifica defense gave a preview ofwhat it planned to do all season as they not only shut- out the Pioneers but forced nine turnovers. The first tur- nover led to the Mariners first score as Mike Ross culminated 40 yard drive by scoring from the I3 on a reverse. The Big Blue scored on their next poss- esion as Tony Flores went in from 3 yards out and after a two-point conversion pass from Tim Rotell to Shane Bengford the Mariners never looked back. Ed Odin scored on runs of 3 and 4 yards and the defense took care of the rest as they held Western helpless through- out the game. P H S RAMBLES OVER GROVE Trailing 7 3 at halftime Pa ctftca totally demolished a huge Garden Grove team tn the sec ond half of this years Home coming and went on to wtn 30 After Dan Garrison kicked a 26 yard fteld goal tn the first quarter Grove caught the Mariner defensive secondary tn a mtxup and burned them for an 80 yard touchdown pass the first touchdown given up by the defense all year. Coach Bill Craven said some magic words at halftime and the Big Blue Machine played like it is accus- tomed, and tore up the Argo- nauts the final 24 minutes. Ed Odin had I99 yards on 2l carries and 2 touchdowns, and Tony Flores scored from the 9 and Tim Rotell hit Joe Canat- sey on a l0 yard scoring strike. The defense was again awe- some, holding Grove to minus 8 yards rushing, and giving up the first touchdown all season. Crunch unc Lead acifi T Finest Season Ever, Under Head Coach Bill Craven MARINERS BLANK BOLSA On u night when the Mariners were plagued by injuries. the Crunch Bunch defense sup- plied ull the points needed for P,H.S. in stop- ping lflolsa Grande. I3-0. Steve Stocking picked offa Bolsa pass on the fifth play ofthe game and returned it 38 yards forthe score. Two lield goals by Dan Garrison of 32 and 39 yards was all the scoring we need- ed against a scrappy and fired-up Matador squad. Bolsa switched to the I-formation offense in- stead oftheir usual veer, but to no avail as they netted only 6 yards rushing. Tracy Taylor had an interception and Todd Biggs and Tony Flo- res had fumble recoveries.

Head Coach Bill Craven CRUNCH BUNCH SMASIIES LOS AMIGOS Pacifica ran its record to 7-0 by taking apart Los Amigos Z8-0. The much heralded Crunch Bunch defense posted its fiftlt shutout tying it county record. The stingy' unit has given up only 10 points in seven games. Ed Odin scored twice and gained I49 yards. Mike Ross returned an interception 48 yards for another score. and Shane Bcngford and Greg Stewart, tackles Mark Campbell and Troy Brown, and linebackers Brad l-lelnt. Tra- cy Taylor and Scott Harrison made things mis- erable for the Lobos. holding tltem to minus 22 yards rushing and sticking quarterback'Art Wilcox 6 times. MARINERS STOP TOUGH FOOTHILL The Pacifica defense gave further indi- cation that they would not permit oppo- nents to cross the goal-line as they' con- tained a physical Foothill squad in leading the Mariners to their second nin of the young season. 9-3. Time and time again the defense turned the Knights away as they seemed to be within striking distance of six points. The defense, led by linebacker Brad HeIm's fumble recovery and two key intercep- tions. forced turnovers at crucial times all night. The winning margin came when Tim Rotell. who hit I0 of I3 passes for I47 yards. connected with Mike Ross on a sim- ple delay pattern and Ross outran the en- tire Foothill secondary for :t 77 yard touchdown with less than 8 minutes in the game. That touchdown. along with Dan Garrisons 32 yard field goal in the second quarter, gave the Mariners more than enough points for victory. V 'F'- Ron Pruter PACIFIC.-N KNOCKS OFF RANCHO Pacifica tuned up for the showdoyyn against Santiago by defeating Rancho. 27-8, The Mariners moved up and down the field all game as Ed Odin gained IIS yards on 23 carries. and Pacifica gave up only the second touchdown all season, The score by Rancho didn'l Conte against the much heralded Crunch Bunch defense. however. as it came off a 95 yard kickoff return. Mike Ross got things rolling with a 3 y'ard run in the first quarter. Mike Eaton then scored the first of two touchdowns on runs of'-I and Z0 yards.Tin1 Rotcll added another score on a 13 yard run midway' through the fourth quarter to close out the scoring. The defense was again superb. as the front wall held the running game to a standstill. and the Crunch Bunch picked off three Vaqucro passes. Brad Helm grabbed his fifth intercep- tion ofthe year. Steve Stocking tied the school record with his seventh of the season. and Tra- cy' Taylor had the third steal. making a spectac- ular 4I yard return.
