Social Science Personnel wise, the Social Science Department of Pacific was one of the most interesting. Only one new teacher, Mr. Robert Letro, an experienced teacher from New York, was added to the department's faculty. No one was lost that had been in the department in June of l959. Two of the teaching staff returned after a year in Europe with experiences and first-hand knowledge that cannot be gained from regular college courses. They were Dr. Walter Schuiling, who was a Fullbright Scholar to Denmark, and Mr. Basil Martinez, who traveled throughout Europe on a year's leave from our school system. A course in Western Civilization was taught this year for the first time at Pacific. An accelerated course in World His- tory was established for the more-capable-learners. The Democracy Classes visited the Superior Courts and the Sheriff's offices here in San Bernardino. In these Prob- lems in Democracy classes, the social science staff attempted not only to understand the problems of our democratic way of life, but also gave everyone o chance to speak his mind on problems that concern all levels of our society.
