Several of our teachers had the opportunity to attend college during the summer of 1959 on a scholarship. Mr. Lundy The National Science Foundation Institute program allowed me to take regular graduate courses leading to the Masters Degree, and also allowed me to attend special lectures by national leaders in Mathe' matics and Science. Mr. Green The Atomic Energy Commission Summer Institute was very informa- tive on the subiect of radio activity, atomic fall-out, and other such prob- lems of the atomic age. Mr. Macomber I enioyed the opportunity to work in a real research laboratory. The trip on SC's Valero IV to collect specimens from the Catalina Channel was also very interesting. Mrs. Gresham .i if Judy Akam, Dick Pennoni, Howard Killion and Margaret Murad of a regular physics class are shown demonstrating a transmitter. A few years ago the physics program was completely re- arranged and stepped up to qualify for National Defense money. The Physical Education Department at Pacific High School offered a well-rounded program which was geared to the interests of the students. A new course taught this year was sophomore orientation in which the instructors stressed the values of physical, mental, and social health in our community. Aside from regular physical education, the girls' section sponsored the Anchorettes, a drill team, and the leadership group which included the cheerleaders, pompon girls, flag twirlers and baton twirlers. These groups performed at games to instill the pep and enthusiasm that Pacific is noted for. The Girls' Athletic Association is designed especially for the girls who have a keen interest in athletics. These girls aid the physical education instructors, in many sports and events. Boys were prepared through this department for various sports that were offered this year. They were football, track, basketball, gymnastics, baseball, and swimming.
