The Aides served in another capacity, too -as guides to school functions l Back to School Night, Open l-louse, and opening dayl. But it can't be all work, so the group took one day off, and with the Student Court members, climbed aboard the school bus and were off to LOS Angeles, where they finally ended up with free tickets to The lce Capades. Led by band captain Bill Lewis, concertmeister Dicksie Smalley and directed by Mr, Frank Salazar, our musicians have traveled and played just about everywhere in Southern California. The band played in the Los Angeles and Ven- tura county fairs and between the halves of the USC vs. Washington and UCLA vs. Rice football games, They marched and played in the march of Dimes parade, the Ventura Band and Orchestra concert and at all the home football and basket- ball games. All these dates and more led up to their great concert here on June 2. The orchestra played for all the seasonal as- semblies - their performance at the Everyman assembly being particularly spirited -- and for the Junior and Senior plays, They topped the season with their two-in-one county concert at Brittell auditorium, half symphonic and half pops and all good. orchestra plays before count groups Lett to right: M. The varsity baseballers came through in a big way by finishing their season undefeated and winning the Ventura county league title, Their perfect slate included lO wins against no losses. The closest team in the league was Santa Paula with 3 defeats. Though coach Burt Killingsworth lost many of his talented first string through graduation, he should still have a sizeable talent oool to draw from next year. Coach Killingsworth could field an entire team with catchers Charles Staniland and Clark Rex, pitchers Delmar Walker, Juan Hernandez and Charles Venable, first baseman Ted Hughes, third baseman Dick Marr, shortstop Richard Valles, left fielder Jerry McNabb, center fielders Harold Reich and John Cain, and right fielder Jim Core - all graduating seniors. They planned senior activities and planned rhern well. They built a senior patio. lt was modest-but they hoped it would last and be improved on by each succeeding class. Near the end of school came long awaited ditch day. The officers - Fred Crosby, president, Janice Eaton, vice-president, Molly Pritchard, secretary, Ernest Salinas, treasurer, Pascual Lopez, sergeant- at-arms A and Mr, Tom Rosser and Miss Gere had our new buildings quietly talks' the place of tho old . , . prove capable leaders a'dQne Fitzgerafd, class sponsors, planned long and worked hard toward this day. And when the day came, the seniors treked off, escaping the watch- ful eye of Mr, Hauser, to Lake Enchanto. They swam and got wet, rode horseback and got sore, went boating and got calloused land wetl, ate and got cramps, and after they rested they ate some more, They filled the day with all they could and when they took the long bus ride home, tired- ness created in. The officers led capably and their ideas were good. All thanlcs to them. Many new services were provided, and one, a new department, brought the school a blue ribbon in its first BOARD OF TRUSTEES: Left to right: Mr. Mike G, Vuiovich, Mr. F. The schools of America stand at the threshold of a new era in their history. lf they perform their full function, they are to furnish the understand- ings, the confidence, and the will for greatly im- proved human relationships with the rest of the world, and for the creative transformation of Mr. A atomic power into better living, They face a great crisis of opportunity, We know with certainty that a critical re-evaluation of schools is in the near offingg that new demands will soon be made of them: and that a new and more complete de- oendence will be placed upon them. We gladly ac- cept the challenge! rthur G. Becker M r. Everett C. Braun. Primripzil our principal speaks why some succeed A recent study was made to learn why some men succeed better than others. What was the reason? lt was not experience, ambition, culture, personality, knowledge, skill, judg- ment, courage, or energy, The one single trait that emerged a clearly distinguishing characteristic was Enthusiasm. They teach us in our classes, and sponsor programs rarely found in other schools. There is Career Day, ably arranged by the counselors and aided by the teachers and the citi- zens of the community. It had supervisors from all over the state watching with interest. Some of the visiting speakers were brought from great distances, one traveling from San Francisco to address the students. The vocal and instrumental music groups under the top-notch direction of Mr, George l-lolgate and Mr, Frank Salazar have won honors in every competition they entered this Year. The Madrigal singers were even invited to perform in Arizona during the Easter holiday. We traded teachers with the armed services. Mr. Tom Rosser returned to the school after serv- ing with the Navy, and Mr. Arthur Cohen, a new teacher this year, left to perform his term with the Army. They make us proud to be their students.
