It only seems a short time ago that the class of l95O entered into a new school year for the last time, We hope we have presented you with a yearbook that you will long treasure and enjoy, Vifithin the following pages, we have attempted to put forth the things that you will want to look back upon and remember in your years to follow. The staff has worked long and hard to do these things, We have based the theme of the book around their different jobs. The staff's cooperation has been wonderful, and on behalf of them I would like to thank Mr. R. K. Phelps for his guidance at many desperate moments, also the Oxnard Press-Courier, S. K. Smith Company, West Coast Studio, District Photo-Engravers, Mr, Dave Harmon, Advertisers, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Mr. Norman Haskell and the Senior Play cast. We, the staff members, wish to extend our further appreciation to all the unseen helping hands who gave of their time SO willingly to bring this book to completion. .fcmefla Sfciaefcwa Editor- inChief 3, 31 r hm I 3 J 4 7 ft? While the club has its share of social events, such as their coffee and doughnut party, gay nineties party, and the Christmas party, the purpose of the club was to maintain professional standards and to develop individual professional achievements within the membership. As a charter member of the National Education Association the Faculty Club played host to teachers of Ventura,County at a dinner meeting honoring Mr. Fredrick Wardner, National President of Classroom Teachers. The officers of the club were: Mrs. Lowe, Presi- dent, Dr. Kendall, Vice President, Mrs. Von Allmen, Secretary, and Mr. McKnight, Treasurer. The Juniors were well aware of that statement as they began their eleventh year full of great expectations, First prom, first class play, first year as upper classmen, seats nearer the front in the assemblies, and a real sense of belonging, all blended into a well rounded Junior year. Heading the class was Bill Hooper, Junior president. Other elected officers were, Barbara Galloway, Vice President, Genevieve Mason, Secretary, Jeanette Caulk, Treasur- er, and Keith and Kenneth Bennifield, Sergeants-at-Arms. To start the ball rolling, early in the first semester, the Juniors had their first party. Because of good organization and cooperation of the class a good time was enjoyed by all. On January 2Oth the class again took advantage of party privileges and held a very successful Clash dance, Angel's Quartet played for the affair. A Clash King and Queen were chosen. Talent scored high as the Juniors began try-outs for their play. A melodrama, Curse of an Aching Heart was chosen, The play under the direction of Mr, Norman Haskell, was a wonderful success. A highlight in the class activities was a prolific Junior assembly. An operetta plus a fashion show gave the assembly a highly original touch, The buzz of excitement and promising plans reigned throughout the year as the much looked forward to Junior-Senior prom became a reality, The date was June 3rd and o grateful Senior class danced in the beautifully decorated Armory. Miss Cynthia Donlon and Mr. Willard Appenzellar were guiding lights in the active Junior year, as advisors and counselors. A student store almost became possible due to efforts of the eleventh grade but the plans fell through. A successful plan was that of getting their Senior rings early. To start the year off quickly a heated election of class officers began early in the year. When the smoke finally cleared the victors were as follows: Jimmy FitzGerald, Pres- ident, Bobby Lowe, Vice-President, Peggy Gladney, Secretary, Frank Cancino, Billy Fitz- gerald as Sergeants-at-Arms. Advisors for this class were Miss Eleanor Graham and Mr. Vance Davis who both turned in commendable performances. Leading the Sophomore social events was a Gay Hay Dance held the latter part of November in the Girls' Gym at O.U.l-l.S. Dancing over a hay-covered floor to the re- corded strains of well-known bands, all agreed that the dance was a big success. The combined efforts of the advisors, Mr. Davis and Miss Graham, the officers, and the tenth-year class as a whole, went into the Sophomore assembly held on April 28. A large group of talent was discovered and the performances were well accepted by both the student body and the faculty. Behind the class of '52 are two high school years. Both years have been full of fun and experience, The fun, as well as the experience will go on ---- the fun with the same light-heartedness, the experience growing. The next year the coveted goal, graduation, will seem ever nearer to the class of '52 for they then will be upper-classmen. May their future be one they'll be proud to call a past. 'FOI' ROW: IJ. Turning in an excellent job as coaches were Miss Dorothy Adams and Mr. William Eley. Both Miss Adams and Mr. Eley were new at Oxnard High this year, as were the Fresh- men, and so, in a way, they began together. All agree that the results were superior. Playing the infield, as officers, were Joe Brown, President, Shirley Blatt, Vice-Pres- ident, Genevieve Edwards, Secretary, and Dicksie Smalley, Treasurer. The election of officers being the first highlight on the Freshman agenda it was early in the year that the planning of activities began. A Christmas Party was the first Fresh-man social event. Saint Nick was the theme of the combination party-dance which was held in the Girls Gym at O.U.H.S. the week before Christmas vacation. Sock Hop was the title of the next Freshman dance which was held the latter part of February. Socks of every color, stripe, and check were seen swaying to the recorded orches- tra music thus carrying out the theme. Prizes of scarves and socks were awarded to those wearing the gayest of the foot apparel. May marked the month for the Freshman contribution to assemblies. The theme was a South American Night Club and all talent was pre- sented as a floor show. The program was well applauded by all. Patience and superb direction from the advisors, hard work from the of- ficers, and cooperation from the class as a whole have proved the oustanding qualities of the Class of '53. And so this inning ends with only three more to go. With the Major League as their goal, an able class such as this surely can't lose! -:fly As - Q aff I 4,3 'fi I, I , , 1 1 -J 1, 1 1 1 41 ,,. .if 1.1. p, 1 ' 1 To - '- S Q 'Lx -n ' ' .uv T 'F 3 . sa 'E 3 ' ' 4 ' 1 I 1 - f V' iw, 4 ., x a Jn 'xv' A 4' J 1 1 , if - ,- 3 ., 1 . 2 Q'-a ,111 sk, gf af- a ' .A 'S fs - fb 2 ' .A ' 5 1 4T X .4 ' ' Gb - 'Mmfq in Q 1' 4 'JN , f'1 I P -1 J mah ' 1' Ai .1 I 'IOP K B XIIITII on VK Xllex B 1401x011 P 1101111 1 1 111 11 Xl 1 'ND ROW 1 1 1 N 11,11 N X 1 111111 1 1 ott 1 1 I 1111011 POI RTH ROV! The Oxnard band, under the excellent direction of Mr. Worth Blair, had a very successful year and is rapidly making a name for itself in Ventura County. The officers for the band are: Bob Teeters, President, Martin Rice, Vice President, Verna Hayes, Secretary-Treas- urer, and Vancil Mcl-lam and Barbara Rhodes, Sergeant at Arms. In addition to these officers there are some other people whose duty it is to keep things in the band running smoothly. These people are: Jackie Ross, Student Director, Louis Keith, Drum Major, William Ballais, Librarian, and Williard Ballais, property manager. The band has kept quite busy by playing at such affairs as the dedication of the new City Hall, downtown on Santa Claus night, for the P.T.A., and numerous other occasions. They were also present at all of the home football games and most of the assemblies. ..- ,' - R W U C 1? is :mi-Y' , . , , . . - x GLI-Il+l1'Ll'B FRONT ROW: NI. Smith. V. Mm'1'is. R. Soo Hun, L. They have a rather difficult job at times, but work hard and do a good job. Just as the hall partrol is the Police Department of O.U.l'l.S., the Student Court is the Judicial Branch. John Moon and Tony Quisenberry are Chief Justice and Associate Justice, The bailiffs, whose duty it is to bring the miscreants into court, are: Dick Johnson, Ronnie Pease, and Eddie Black. ' F 3 s f .Ar we 5422 Looking back over the year we all recall reading the fine issues of our school news- paper, The Buzz , ln the beginning of the year there was practically no-one on the staff who had had any actual newspaper experience and when the first issue came out, the entire staff had its fingers crossed. Many a critical eye passed thoroughly over the paper from front to back and when all was over and done, we found the newspaper on the other side of that big bridge they call inexperience. The Buzz was published bi-monthly and appeared on Tuesdays. A special Junior edition was printed, as well as Christmas and April Fools' Day issues. The last edition was an enlarged issue containing a glance toward the future and a farewell to the Seniors. Heading this years' staff in the capacity of Editor in Chief was the capable Trenie Biittel. Dorothy Brinkerhoff was managing editor first semester and Don Galloway held down the Managing Editor's position second semester while the Feature Editor was Donna Spellman, the Women's Page Editor, Helene Barnett and the News Editor, Robbie Baize. Boys' Sports Editor was Jim Bashore with Allan Kurihara as his assistant and Girls' Sports Editor was Marilyn Hackney. Copy Writers were Carol DeYoung, Jimmy Silknetter, and Pat Skeets. Advertising Editor was Marty Hazen, with Rita Holquin and Kathie Harrison acting as her assistants. The Staff Photographer was Bill Drummond, the Librarian, Joyce Simmons, and the Copy Boy was our able Buck Pena. Reporters on the staff were composed of all of the students taking the journalism course. Advisor for the paper was Mr. R. K. Phelps. E 5-...H 4 C7 Q5 Exciting plans for the C C7 G got under way early in the year with the arrival of Mr. R. K, Phelps, head of the journalism department. Louella Stockton and Carol Rosenberg were chosen as Co-editors. At the first meeting this staff was chosen as follows: Marilyn Martin, Business Manager, Tony Quisenberry, Art Editor, Bob Leunis, Copy Editor, Bill Drummond, Photog- raphy Editor, Bob Slatten, Assistant Photography Editor, Don Galleway, Sports Editor, Marilyn Hackney, Gir's Sports Editor, Lola Perez, Circulation Manager, Marty Hazen, Advertising Editor, Laverne Lewis, Publicity Manager. During the year changes were made in the arrangement of the staff. The first semester saw Carol Rosenberg in charge of the layout of the book. ln the second semester Louella Stockton was made editor-in-chief and Carol De Young and lris Inadomi were appointed assistant editors. Without the cooperation and aid of Ira Lewis, Marilyn Wensel, Wanda Thurmond, Williard Bellais, William Bellais, Donna Spellman, Harvey Pena, Bruce Jessup, Allen Kurihara, Mary Francis Godwin, Johnny Husband, Claudette Arnal, Lorena Davey and many others, the annual could not have been as successful. SCHOLARSHIP SOCIETY Holding true to its traditional purpose this club strove to foster a higher standard of scholarship and broader ideals of service on the part of the stu- dents of OUI-IS. Oklahoma combined with a tour of UCLA and USC and a visit to the museum provided the club's first activity. Many members also attended a district convention held in Santa Monica in the early spring. A banquet honoring the life members climaxed the year. Outstanding members are those who have at- tained membership for a minimum of six out of eight semesters and have therefore become life members of the California Scholarship Federation. MUSIC CLUB Formed for the purpose of bringing about a deeper appreciation of music, this club enjoyed a highly successful first year. This year's activities featured a choral group demonstration at the Hollywood High School Auditorium, a program that the Oxnard group participated in. A special feature of the club's meetings was the playing of recordings of certain pieces of music to enable its members to develop their music appreciation to a high level. Discussions were also held on famous composers and their works, Mr. Worth Blair sponsored this able organization and the officers were: James Omo, President, Willard Bellais, Vice-President, Verna Hayes, Secretary, and Raymond Holter, Treasurer. It is hoped that the new club will gain in membership and prominence as well as age so that it may stand on equal footing with the older clubs here at Oxnard. This trip taken by the Science Club was one of their usual methods of fur- thering the interest of science in the eyes of the students. The club also achieved this goal by having student and guest speakers at every bimonthly meeting where they discussed various subjects such as atomic energy, flying discs, and animal life. The only starting member not returning is co-captain Charlie Bangs. The Yellowjackets hope to be playing in their own gym next year and if this is possible returning lettermen will have an extra year of experience under their belts and should really roll. The Jackets lost twice to the powerful Ventura Pirate Preps, twice to Santa Paula, and twice to Lan- caster, while William S. Hart defeated them once. Oxnard walloped the AFillmore Flashes in bath of their games and in the second tussle against Hart avenged their previous loss by a 48-32 victory. Coach Frank Keich, in his first year as varsity hoop coach, proved that he knew how to mold good teams. Lack of reserves somewhat hampered his attempts for a championship contender. Zac After being dethroned for one year by Ventura, the Jackets roared back this year to capture the Ventura County track crown by the most decisive margin in years. The Jackets made the meet even more spectacular by scoring a great deal of their points in seconds and thirds, although the powerful shot put crew led by Big John Soria, scored a clean sweep of their specialty, the only clean sweep registered in the meet. The Jackets were reinforced by a great number of undere classmen during the year and stand a great change or repeat- ing next year. Led by their two co-captains, hard luck sprinter, Johnny Husbands and quarter miler, Ma n u el Silva, the Jackets steamed through the whole season with an unbeaten record Despite the early season loss of sprinter Johnny Hus- bands and pole vaulter Jim Fergeson, the Jackets still proved impossible to master. Sfovvl' L. l+Inil'ic'k Girls' sports started out with a bang this year with basketball being the first on the list. The Senior class swept the field in basketball by defeating the Sophomores by a score of l6 to lO and the Juniors 8 to 4, The second three month stretch was spent in playing speedball. When the season drew near the end and inter-class games were played, the Junior class found themselves on the long end of the score by defeating the Seniors and Sophomores. Tennis was played all during the year, but no inter-class competition was held. A group of doubles' players did, however, represent O,U.l-l.S. at the Fillmore playday, on October 20. The third quarter softball season brought some exciting games and stiff competi- tion. Volleyball, which usually has the number one spot as far as the order af sports goes, wound up a successful year of girls' sports.
