The school itself is created from the studentsg its quality rests upon their attitude. Since we have been very proud of the student body in general this year, we are honored to dedicate this TOM TOM to each and every student in acknowledgment of his fine character. F ORE WURD Every school year brings with it many memorable events of varying importance to d i f f e r e n t individuals. This year we of the TOM TOM staff have attempted to capture the student viewpoint for you. Thus, we hope youwill always recall these important happenings when looking through your 1965 TOM TOM. It is atime of zest for living and knowledge, of eagerness to find oneself and break the barrier of tomorrow. YOU ARE IMPORTANT You are important, for the time will come when you will sit in the seats or stand in the shoes of those whose years seem so distant now. You are important, for there is something in this world that will not be done unless you do it. YOUR INFLUENCE COUNTS. SHELDON E. GUILE Ed. M., Syracuse University Superintendent of Schools 8 The greatest value of Owego Free Academy is not the bricks and mortar or the equipment, or eventhe curriculum - valua- ble as this isg the greatest value is its spirit . The spirit of inquiry, critical thinking, purposefulness, self-sacrifice and sportsmanship, the personality and influence of the faculty - all these are in you. They are your influence. Make them count. For these things, we wish you well. Sheldon E. Guile Superintendent In this commencement year 1965, you enter upon adult life in a world far different from that remembered by your parents on their graduation day. No one can fully comprehend this world you enter, nor can anyone foretell the conditions of the future. For certain it is, however, that the world will change. It is even now changing with ever increasing rapidity. Disillusioning changes have frightened many Americans who are calling for a return to the tried and true , or, in other words, a return to a familiar and comfortable bygone day. Since you, too, may be assailed by frightening changes in the world you now enter, you will necessarily ask yourselves many questions: Will the new automation leave me jobless---or provide me with new job opportunities? Will the new social upheavals of have not peoples cause me to kill or be killed in a city riot, a Mississippi town, Viet Nam, Panama or the Congo---or will these upheavals one day result in a more equitable and peaceful society for all men? Will the new power politics of the great powers lead me and all mankind into the oblivion of an atomic holocaust---or into a new era of law and order marked by limitless nuclear power used to enrich my life? No one knows the answers to these questions. The RIGHT answers must be found! They are most likely to come from continuing educational experiences which include not only the assimilation of facts in formal schools but also the knowledge and wisdom learned on the job, in the home and church, in the public meeting, and byway of an enlightened press. This education for a new age may provide some answers and give you and all other Americans a new outlook, a new frame of mind. A great American once expressed the challenge of a revolutionary time with immortal words. His outlook is as new and far-reaching today as it was over one hundred years ago. The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthral ourselves ---and then, we shall save our country. QAbraham Lincolnj Best Wishes , ,Maja Edward A. Adamo EDWARD A. Motter, Pres. Ctransferredj Dear Classmates, As June draws nearer, we all look forward to graduation. Some of us will go on to college, some to work, but all of us will go on to new horizons. Mixed with our feelings of expectation is a little sadness at leaving old friends and memories. In the future we shall look back on the last four years as some of our most carefree and happy days. It has been an honor and aprivilege to serve as your class president. I should like to thank all the seniors for their co-operation and their many kindnesses, which I shall always remem- ber. ir Senior Class President Jon Holgate Our four years are finally over, and we can at last leave O.F.A. But many of us Seniors do not feel like leaving. We wish to trade places with the freshman and live another four years filled with sports, plays, proms and happiness. But since that situation is impossible, we shall have to be contented with memories-memories of football and basketball games, freshman initiation, the junior prom, the junior and senior plays, and the fun in school during and between classes. These four years have been good ones, for they have prepared us for the future. Wherever we go, whatever we do, we shall cherish our memories of O.F.A. Each year the Honor Society carries out these purposes by inducting as members those students who have been out- standing in scholarship, leadership, character and service. MATH CLUB One of the most challenging organizations in our school is the Math Club. Under the direc- tion of Mr. Witinski, the MathClub was designed to further the student's understanding and appre- ciation of mathematics. At each meeting the members discuss a specific area of math which is not usually touched upon in the classroom. Frequently many members put their knowledge to work when they represent O. F. One purpose is to give students a chance to think leisurely and to analyze critically how and why they are working and living as they are, In this age in which youngpeople are pushed through their formal education with such speed, this opportunity to think and analyze is important. The other purpose is to give students a chance to sit down with trained adults and examine moral and spiritual values. This examination is essential since many people think that the younger genera- tion lacks purpose. Some topics which the members have discussed include: What is time? What is Truth? reconcile the principle existing social classes? and How do We of equality with Key Club is a service organization composed of leaders and potential leaders. It promotes the development of leadership, initiative and character. Its many projects this year included selling football and basketball programs, planting trees, spon- soring charity drives and making contri- butions. This year the Key Club added another advisor, Mr. Crossett. Because of this year's successful turnout, Key Club has hopes of being even more active next year. From the early hours of the morning to long after the 3:17 bell, Mr. McVannan, aided by Bob Goodenough and the Audio Visual Aids crew, shuffled record players, projectors, and film strip machines for the convenience of the faculty. Willingly they ran the machinery when necessary. While A. V. A. met the needs of the faculty, the library assistants, under the supervision of Miss Grimesjtried to please the stu- dents. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA This year was anespecially interesting one for the members of the F.F,A. Their major project was the construction of a greenhouse behind the school. The green- house, after it was completed, housed cuttings of geraniums and shrubs for the school grounds. The boys also raised in- structional plants in the green house. ln January, Mr, Fyock accompanied seven senior agriculture students on a field trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The Farm Show consisted of approximately seventeen acres of displays, farm equipment, animal buildings , demonstration areas , and meeting rooms. Every phase of agriculture was represented by all of the major equipment, food processing, and horticulture establish- ments in the country. The trip was a valuabl e educational experience for the boys who are our future farmers MACHINIST CLUB The boys in the Machinist Club are boys with the purpose of mastering an in- dustrial skill for future employment.Work- ing closely with Mr. Andrews and local manufacturers, the boys are taught the functions and operations of precision tools'. Goodenough, FUTURE TEACHERS This year at Owego Free Academy, Mrs. Morrisey started a Future Nurses' Club, This is the first time there has ever been such a club at OFA. The girls first drew up their Consti- tution, which they presented to the Student Council, and then elected their officers. The Constitution was finally ratified by the Student Council in January 1965. The purpose of the Future Nurses' Club is to gain a better understanding ofthe nursing profession and to learn more about some of the qualities one needs to become a nurse. The Future Teachers of America, supervised by Mr. Schanbacher, is an organ- ization open to any junior or senior student interested in teaching. This year the stu- dents learned methods of teaching and practiced them on each other. During the year -they Visited the elementary schools and taught the young children. In addition, they worked hard to raise money for their treasury. FUTURE NURSES Future Nurses Club Front Row, left to right: C. Knight, J. Fuller, N. Hilton, S. Vona, B. Snyder, K. Stanton, C. Beal. Its purpose is to increase student interest in the field of art and to spread art culture throughout the commu- nity. To achieve this purpose, the club held art shows both in and out of school. Also, the members worked in co-operation with the TOM TOM and SMOKE SIGNALS staffs when art work was needed. O.F.A. has certainly benefited by the addition of the Art Club. Its main function is to arrange after school intramurals in field hockey, Volleyball, basketball, softball, bowling and golf. Under the capable guidance of Mrs. Brewer, the girls scheduled many play days during the year. The girls also maintain a bulletin board for displaying the sports of the different seasons and holidays. Another important function of G. A. A. is to raise money for the pins and sweaters which the girls earn by participating in various sports . This year the Student Council was very active in carrying out its numerous pro- grams. In early fall it held apioture project. Later, for the benefit of the students, the Coimcil sponsored the Christmas program, the Talent Show, and several paid assem- blies. A new serviceprovidedbythe Council was a bi-monthly newsletter, the purpose of which was to inform the students of student government business. Through its programs, the Student Council made great strides in 1964-65. STUDENT CUUNCIL GIRLS ' A THLE TIC ASSOCIA T I ON G. A. A. Front Row, left to right: K. Manchester, Treas., B. A., it has come a long way during the three years of its existence. It has grown from a com- mittee drawing up a constitution to a well- organized group of students, This year the club has worked intently on achieving its purpose, which is to bring the German student closer to the customs, art, literature, and other aspects of German culture. Some of the programs presented to the club include movies lent to the club by GERMAN CL UB the German consul, records of folk songs, great works by famous German composers, studies of famous paintings, and exerpts of the great German literature. The club also invited guest speakers who had visited or lived in Germany to talk about their exper- iences. The club planned a Christmas caroling party and sang Christmas carols auf deutsch to Owego families who have German heritages. These activities made the year a very profitable and enjoyable one for all members. CAMERA CL UB Front Row, left to right: S. Ingersoll, P. Ward, F. Brown, Whittemore, D. Woleott, D. Since the first string has lost three valuable players from last year, this season was one of rebuilding. Next year We expect much from Gary Deuel, a sophomore guard who was moved up mid-season from his position on the J. V. squad. Also, we note that Ron Dunham, Dick Burgess, Jack Schmitt, and Doug Jones show great promise for a successful team next year, Even though the 1964-1965 scores were not the highest, the spectators can vouch that our team demonstrated unwavering sportsmanship and deter- mination throughout the season. Under the guidance of Coach Wheaton, the varsity whooped its way to a 4-4 record, narrowly missing the Southern Counties League Championship. In the season's first league game the O. F. A. warriors took revenge from Elmira Heights for last year's defeat, then continued into Waverly, where the team recelvedasurprise set- back as Waverly defended its tradition of never losing a home-coming game. The following week, how- ever, the Owego Indians truly showed their war paint as they shook the undefeated Chenango Valley team to its foundation. After tucking two more league scalps beneath their belts, the team dueled Horseheads for the championship and lost. The season was com- pleted with a satisfying victory over a traditional Indian foe, the Newark Valley Cardinals. While the Varsity got off to a good start, the Junior Varsity required a little time to warm up, and succeeded ln closing the season with two stunning victories over Newark Valley and Sayre. 99 , i Varsity Wrestlers Front Row, left to right: J. Under the coaching of Richard Brown, the wrestlers finished with a 9 and 5 season this year. Special recognition goes to co- captains Bill Truman and Jon Holgate with Owego Binghamton North Elmira Heights Elmira Free Academy Sayre 12-2 and 10-3 records respectively and to Vestal Don Rummell with a 11-3 score. The high- Elmira South Side lights of the season were the defeats of Homer Vestal and Union-Endicott. Owego captured Cortland third place in the Southern Counties Tourna- Waverly ment held at Horseheads, and then sent Joe Chenango Valley Kwiatkowski, Ken Gillette, Bill Truman and Horseheads Ken Ostrander to Section 4 Finals at U.E. Windsor Coach Tom Zayac and his J.V.'s ended Newark Valley with a 10,3 and 1 season. Not only were Union-Endicott Vestal and U.E. exciting victories but Horseheads turned out to be a hard won match with the final score 29-23. Roy Fox, who wrestles 127 lbs., had an undefeated season on the J,V. squad. Junior Varsity Wrestlers Front Row, left to right: H. Robinson, J. M. Watkins, T. Burrell, E. Stam, E. Peterson. The Owego Free Academy hustlers had a rewarding Track and Field season under the direction of Coach Valvo. It was parti- cularly successful considering that there were only seven lettermen back from 1963. Their record contained three wins and one loss in the regular season dual meets. In addition, they placed second in the Southern Counties League Meet and second in the Tioga County Invitational Meet. The Mile Medley Relay Team, consisting of Skip Wolf, Manning Stahl, Jim Crannell and Jack Russell, placed first in the Section IV relays at Vestal, and, thus, set a new school record. The same team placed second at the Elmira relays. Other new school records were set by Jim Crannell, Dale Bennett, and the half-mile relay team consisting of Manning Stahl, RustyGi1fillan, Dale Bennett and Skip Wolff. Gowe, A. Whitaker, N. COACHES The Owego Free Academy VarsityClub is one of the most active service clubs in the school. Composed of boys who have played in the varsity athletic program and have earned a varsity letter, they exemplify the qualities of outstanding character that should be expected from high s chool athletes. The club operates the concession stand for football and advises. in the printing of football programs. They also sponsor the annual Varsity-Faculty basketball game. From the proceeds they buy senior award sweaters for members who qualify and help provide money for other worthy school projects such as the Golden Rule Fund and the American Field Service scholarship program. The big project for this year was co-operating with other school and commu- nity organizations in purchasing a football scoreboard. If there is aworthwhile project or service to be performed, the Varsity Club will try to make it successful. B 4 ik. E I i 1 Q . E 103 Football Cheerleaders Front Row, left to right: K. The initial plans, Started in 1963 by Kay Kushner, were completed by Diane Van Patten, who, as President, led the organization through its first year. The main objective of the Pep Club is to promote school spirit by urging the students not only to attend all school sports but to join in the cheers. Under the guidance of its advisors, Miss McHeffey and Mrs. Brewer, the Pep Club made a valuable contribution to O. F. A.
