Board of Education BOARD OF EDUCATION Front row, left to right: Harold Newcomb, President, Ethel O. Strong, Lennart Erickson. Row two: Edward Engelhard, Orville B. Shafer, Keith Famulener. Not pictured, LaVerne Brister You, the members of the Class of l96l, are now passing a very im- portant milestone. What you have learned and absorbed up to this point will remain with you throughout life. This should not be the end of the educational process, for whether you continue studies at some institution of higher learning, or immediately start to work, you have an opportunity and obligation to use and develop your talents. From this point on you be- come the responsible party. Whatever you do, wherever you go, there is al- ways one thing over which you will have absolute control -- you can al- ways do your best. As you leave Owego Free Acade- my and move on to new fields, my congratulations and best wishes go with you. Harold Newcomb MAIN OFFICE STAFF Front row, left to right: A. Hatch, Stenog- rapher, E. Watkins, Account Clerk, B. L. Halstead, Senior Account Clerk. Row two: Mr. Guile, Superintendent, B. Weber, Senior Clerk, L. Pistolese, Business Manager A Message from Uur Superintendent THE WORLD OF LEARNING G The World of Learning has two groups of people, RECEIVERS and IVERS. RECEIVERS pour into their minds facts, culture and ideas. They absorb knowledge with minds that are similar to unplayed phonograph records. They become static store-houses. GIVERS have minds that serve as channels through which ideas are transmitted to others. They too have read and leorned what others have done - - but, more significantly, they have thoughts and ideas of their own, and have carried them into action. They live creatively, RECEIVERS do the routine work and follow the well-worn grooves of living. They are the listeners, the watchers, and readers of lite. GIVERS build the bridges and create the jobs, scour cancer and polio, and send the Minuteman and Polaris from the launching pad. Class of l96l -- whether GIVERS or RECEIVERS -- Board and Staff wish you well. Sheldon E. Guile, Superintendent In President John Kennedy's inaugural address he requested the citizens of the United States: Ask not what your country will do for youg ask what you can do for your country. The high school students of today can make their greatest contribution to their country by securing the best education possible, thereby equipping themselves to face life and love it - - to meet its challenges and problems with courage, confidence, and intelligence. Jackson, Mr. Wheaton, Adviser Time has flown swiftly by since we entered high school as wide-eyed freshmen. Four years ago we looked with awe on the impressive seniors, and coveted their exalted posi- tions. Now that we are seniors, the exhilaration is ac- companied with a tinge of sadness at leaving O. F. A. We carry with us memories of both success and fail- ures. Memories of freshman initiation, the class picnics, BalIerina Brit gracefully poses the proms, and our junior and senior plays are especially vivid. And so while looking ahead to our future, we say goodbye to high school, and the happy times at O. F. A. All's well that ends well. Sl P4 li i,flJ.i One of the scourges ofa bandsman is frostbite. The band suffered little this year during football season, however, and for the first time in many years was able to practice its routines coatless. After the weather turned cold and snow covered the football field, bandsmen went indoors to work on music for the 1960 Christmas Concert-Home for Christmas by Morton Gould, Prelude and Fugue in B flat Minor by J. S. Bach, and Mr. Keagle's Fanfare for Christmas. Later they prepared Am- parita Roca, another piece by Bach, his Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, and Cabo Yubi by Egil Smedvig for the Spring Concert and for the NYSSMA State Contest. Bandsmen don't make music all the time. After years of work to earn money for uniforms, the hard-sought new ones arrived. They are Navy blue, with two narrow gold stripes on the side of each pantleg, and for marching, a red breast-plate on the 'front of the short jacket. Shako hats com- plete the outfits. The uniforms are conservative for concerts, and neat and dressy for outdoor use. When band members aren't working, they are having a good time. They have a good time at their picnics, parties, on busses going to and from games, on band days at Cornell in the rain and the snow, and frequently, to the chagrin of Mr. Keagle, dur- ing rehearsals. The Indians of '61 had a fine season though black days were forecast when Owego dropped two of its first three games. However, Coach Bradley found what was wrong and the rest of the League bowed to them, leaving a 15-2 record to attest to its teamwork. The history of O. F. A.'s team is also inspiring. Owego has won the Southern Counties League for the last three years, 27 of the last 28 league games, and for an even more impressive record has lost only 5 league games in the last 5 years. ln all, O. F. A. has a string of 14 consecutive wins in the league and also another 14 for the year. The little Indians compiled an identical 15-2 record for the regular season. After the now annual classic at Chenango Valley, during which two foul shots after the game turned a seemingly Owego victory to a one point defeat, the J. V.'s, coached by Mr. Pierce, racked up 12 wins before their next loss. Here, too, good teamwork helped to make the fine record. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Front row, left to right: R.
