On the following pages, your imagination will take you as a tourist to the many countries represented. We have tried to tie our different departments with a certain country. Although traveling in foreign lands may be for from our minds now, it may someday be a reality. Where will your travels take you and your classmates in future years? Whether it be near or far, we hope you will treasure this TOM TOM and be reminded of your high school days at O. F. A. As we leave our native shores and begin our guided tour, may we say, Bon Voyage! . CATLIN DEDICATION We, the staff of the T959 TOM TOM, gratefully dedicate the 33rd edition of the TOM TOM to three members of our English department: Miss Alice I. Cat- lin, Miss Helen L. Pfistner, and Mrs. Sada M. Turner. Their untiring efforts have helped greatly in guiding us through our years at both the old and new Owego Free Academy. We will be ever grateful for their efforts in helping us acquire more knowledge of the English language and also for their willingness to help us in so many ways. We are sure that their time will not have been wasted and that they will continue to help students in the years to come. ., - is fx I MRS. SADA M. TURNER MISS HELEN L. But it is of travel in other realms, iourneys of the mind, visions of things to be done and your dreams for the future, that I would write to the Class of 1959. These iourneys for you may seem as trackless as space travel. The traveling of others, past and present, will help make your journeys less difficulty if you use them. These iourneys will be limited only by your determination and drive to reach your destination. In this sense, you will be bound only by yourself and your goals. We wish you God- speed . Sincerely yours, Sheldon E. Guile 7 SHELDON E. GUILE Superintendent of Schools KENNETH, A. VANCE Principal of O. F. Our teach- ers have devoted their lives to the educa- tion of young people so they may be better prepared to assume the responsi- bilities of a democracy. The cafeteria staff have one of the busiest jobs in the school because they prepare the food for all of the schools in the centralized district. Satisfying the individual tastes of so many students has been accom- plished by nourishing and appetizing lunches prepared by the capable ladies in white uniforms. The Maintenance Staff As the stock market shifts, so do the seasons which bring into our new school the symbol- isms of each weather change. Our maintenance staff is ever vigilant in its regard to mud, snow, water, and even the students' own debris of paper and scraps. They held several successful dances during the winter season. Many members of this class have received recogni- tion in the various sports. .In looking over the honor rolls, one also finds several who have excelled in scholastic achievements. During this time many strange looking freshmen wandered through the halls as they bowed to the will of their seniors. However, at the end they suddenly knew that they had gained an understanding of high school life and had made many more friends. To raise money for class expenses a Frosh Hop was held after the Chenango Valley basketball game and it proved to be a financial success. Y .ft . we at it rrs 2 'H' ' 1 Y I V-5 ily' 1 X + f A 21 . One highlight was the sale of attractive book covers. Student Council members were asked to an- nounce the bulletins over the P. A. system. In order to have better communication between the students and Student Council the minutes of every meeting were posted in the halls. Student Council members made recommendations for the contents of the hand- book and sponsored such assemblies as the Alfred Choir, the Syracuse-Colgate debate teams, and the Annual Talent Show. The biggest proiect sponsored by Student Council was the picture proiect. Individual pictures were taken in all six schools of the Owego- Apalachin school system. The Student Council re- ceived twenty per-cent of the total receipts. LEADERS OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT Front row, left to right: B. Bean, M. Barber, President, U. Dunkel, B. Sears, P. I 1 JUNIOR PLAY Onions in the Stew, the first dramatic attempt of a Junior Class of the Owego Free Academy, was directed by Mr. Richardson, dramatics and public speaking teacher. Onions in the Stew is about a family of four who move to an island in the middle of Puget Sound. Although Mr. MacDonald and the two daughters hate island living and its inconveniences in the beginning, they come to love their home. Ruth Saddlemire played Mrs. MacDonald, Philip Elsbree portrayed Mr. Mac- Donald, and Maryon Emerson and Merrilee Vance were Anne and Joan, respectively. The whole group worked very hard but they also had lots of fun. The cast was as startled as Ruth when she rushed on stage, soaking wet, shouting, That shower tried to drown me! Merrilee will never forget the bleached hair that made her look like an egg yolk. RELAXING AT DRESS REHEARSAL Above, Seated: M. Emerson, M. Vance, S, Williams, F. Guthrie. Standing: W. Williams, R. The club hopes that this will lead to better scholarship and enjoyment. This aim has been almost fulfilled as shown by the number of students who were initiated into the Math Club this year. The phases of Math ex- plored bythe club range from calculus to the favorite subject to all the members, puzzle solving. MACHINIST CLUB Besides being responsible for most of the lighting and stage sets used in high school performances, these young men of the Machinist Club engage in many other interesting proiects. The members of this club, consisting of those in the advanced machine course, have the opportunity to learn through practical ex- periences which prepare them for vocational work after graduation. After much practice, the Dance Band turned out some notes to make even professionals iealous. The success story includes playing for two proms and several semi- formals and dinner-dance engagements. The Dixie- land band has been the most popular segment of the band and many times the good ole iazz from the hottest horns in town has had the audience tapping ORCHESTRA The more serious minded students in the music de- partment enioy the cultured atmosphere of the orches- tra. Many compliments have been received by this group since George Dick has conducted the Owego Free Academy's Symphonic Orchestra to new heights of popularity. This year, County Orchestra was held at Owego and most of the members of the orchestra participated in this group. The orchestra also partici- pated in the Band Concert, Dedication Ceremony, and several assemblies. Front row, left to right: P. Blaasch, J. Clark, F. Schmidt, L. Harvey, Co. Manager: L. Knox. The push behind our successful teams was credited to the girls vocally pushing them on to victory. They tried to raise school spirit by having pep assemblies, making posters, booster tags, and singing the Alma Mater at every Friday home game. The football cheerleaders also competed with the Varsity basketball cheerleaders on a point basis. Points were given for such things as making posters and being at a pep assembly. A tradition was started as they formally welcomed each visiting school. The fun that goes with hard work was not forgotten. Especially when the basketball cheerleaders made the teepee placed in the lobby or football's rousing pep rallies in the gym or on the school lawn. This year the method of selecting teams was somewhat different. There were a number of girls from each grade on every team. This proved fairer and more beneficial to all. ln volleyball, 180 girls took part in games which were played every Tuesday and Friday. Playoffs were held at the end of the season with Dawn Rising's team, the Unshakables, winning over the Spikettes in the semi-finals and Karen Cost's team, the Chipmunks, in the finals. Basketball also proved popular, with 150 girls taking part. Having learned the fundamentals and courtesies of bowling, 160 girls took part in this sport which was played on Mondays and Tuesdays at the Elks Bowling Alleys. Top bowlers were Kathy McMahon with high game, Carol Brill, Maria Bensley, and Joanne Fowler with high averages. WOW! voLLEYaALL cAPTAlNs Front row, left to right: F. Guthrie, N. Crockenberg, B. Rising, S. Hathaway, A. Hyatt, C. Brill, C. Getkin. This was a red-letter year for G.A.A. They were given a room for their own use where they could plan their many activities. Paint-spattered girls in blue ieans roamed the halls after decorating the G.A.A. room. The sound of popping corn to be sold at the concession stand and colorful blue and red school banners seen at games were examples of their efforts to raise money. The official is always right is the theme in basketball, volleyball or any such sport. The Girls Officials Club was organized just four years ago to take over the responsibilities of officiating at intramural games. Thanks to the able help of Miss Hope, the officials are now able to make the right decision under most circumstances. OFFICIALS CLUB KlLL THE REFS! Front row, left to right: C. Moro, N. Brown, B.
