Aptly, the theme is Change From the Old to the New. Although we regret leaving this scene of many pleasant memories, we are eagerly anticipating our arrival at the new high school. Those who are presently Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen will be able to enioy their modern surroundings, but the Seniors have the singular honor of being the last class to be graduated from the present O.F.A. In the thirty-second and final edition of this Owego Free Academy's TOM TOM, we bring you the last tangible mementos of high school years in the O.F.A. 3 Dedication . . We, the staff ot the TOM TOM, proudly take this opportunity to dedicate the yearbook of 1958 to our school, the Owego Free Academy. In doing this, it is our intention to leave behind us some recognition of our appreciation and some moments of remembrance. Although this building has now fulfilled its role as a high school, a duty which began 34 years ago, it must now give way to the new. We, who have roamed its halls and profited by our years of experiences here, will forever cherish the memories it has given us. Administration On the first day of school in the new building in 1924, the students, as usual, went to Central School where they had been going halt sessions while the new school was being built. Led by the band, the students marched down to the new build- ing, cheered by the crowds along the way. Since this time the office hasn't really changed at all. Its staff always tries to do the best by the parent, teacher, and the student. 5 The Board of Education had a very full year. Seated, left to right: Orville B. Shafer, LaVerne M. Progress is being made on our new High School building which will be ready for fall occupancy. i' 6 Superintendent of Schools il' Sheldon E. Guile, A.B., Ed.M. if Some thirty years ago the present high school, Owego Free Academy, was built. Now, a short dis- tance away, a new high school takes shape. To- gether, they are symbolic of your T958 TOM TOM. However, neither the old nor the new has real significance without that human factor of which you, the youth of this area, are representative. ln effect, these buildings help bridge the gap between one generation and the next. This, then, is your task, to take from the old those enduring qualities that will make the new, wherever or whatever it may be, purposeful and useful to yourself and others. Board and StaFf congratulate you on a fine record and wish you well in future years. Sincerely yours, Sheldon E. Guile SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE STAFF Front row, left to right: Betty Lou Halstead, Clerk, Louis Pistolese, Business Manager, Barbara Babcock, Accountant Clerk Row two: Sheldon E. Guile, Superintendent, Florence Stupok, Stenographer, Betty Weber, Senior Clerkg William Carson, Transporta- tion Director O.F.A. Principa ir Kenneth A. Vance, The Old and the New We are planning to move into a new high school before another year begins. Students, as well as faculty, are looking forward to this transition. Edu- cationally there will be many changes and im- provements over our present situation. We shall find ourselves in larger and more pleasant sur- roundings with rooms equipped with more modern facilities, an auditorium of which we shall be ex- ceptionally proud, and a gymnasium with sliding doors so it can be used by boys and girls at the same time. These are but a few of the improve- ments and changes. However, let me advise you no matter how great the improvement in building structure is, scholarship will not improve on your part unless you take advantage of the opportu- nities provided. ln moving from the old to the new, let us not stay as we are, but let all of us improve, too. This is an opportunity, don't pass it by. Success is not determined by our surroundings, it is merely a factor. Helpful Members of our School Staff if THE OFFICE STAFF In the main office of Owego Free Academy you will find Mrs. Harders and Mrs. Steele who carry the heavy burden of keeping the office running efficiently and answering the many requests of the students. Despite these interruptions in their work, they are always ready and willing to be ot service. THE CAFETERIA STAFF Our appetites are satisfied at noon-time by tasty lunches prepared in the Cafeteria by Mrs. Francis Hughes, assisted by Mrs. Gloria Henson. THE MAINTENANCE STAFF The fall brings leaves, winter, the snow, and spring, mud. All of these are tracked in through- out O.F.A. Scraps of paper, broken pencils, spilled ink and milk, all are taken care ot as port of the day's work by the building custodians, Pete Ford, Louis Anderson, and George Forsythe. Top to bottom: Mrs. Steele, Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Henson, Donald Ford, George Forsythe. 13 FACULTY AT LEISURE Mrs. Nichols and Mrs. Turner try a hand at language without rules with finger paint at the Artwork- shop for teachers held in March. Mrs. Spencer and Miss Pfistner relax in the teachers' room? Mr. Vance and Mr. Stimik talk it over through the horse . . . familiar meeting place. Autograph sealcers descend upon Mr. Valvo on Tom Tom Day 1957. A bold approach to finger paint- ing is taken by shop teacher, Mr. Bethel, at the Art Workshop. Mr. Guile brings in the wheaties to give strength to the Faculty team as they are about to play the Varsity Club. Classes For all its cracked plaster, battered desks, and torn window shades, study hall will be missed a great deal by all. No longer will the high school student gaze at the paintings on the wall, the same ones that have been there for years and yearsg the seemingly slow moving clock, or even the bulletin board. No more will seniors call it their home or underclassmen their goal. 15 The Class of T958 if SENIOR CLASS The Senior Class have reached the final plateau and are now looking forward to graduation and the future. The class of '58 can be proud of their accom- plishments. They were the first group to have a Sophomore flower day and a cocoa-hour for visit- ing teams. Holding a winter prom and changing the style ofthe school ring are also among the list of firsts. Fond memories include the Crystal Ball when Sandy Fox reigned as queen from her throne in a beautiful silver sleigh. However, this class will be the last one to be graduated from this Owego Free Academy. The Seniors would like to think that their many activities have had something to do with tiring out this old building which will always remain the Alma Mater for '58. JUNIOR CLASS As in past years, the Juniors have had a busy year planning the Prom and undertaking projects to finance it. Stardust was selected as the theme for the Prom and Walt Brittain's orchestra was en- gaged for the big night scheduled early in May. Some of the proiects to which the Juniors de- voted their time and energy were dances, tagdays, bakesales, and a bottle drive. A number of Juniors put in a lot of hard but enjoyable work shining shoes around school to help raise money for the Prom. The class also sold school-day memory books which were a novelty to the students and helped enlarge the treasury. ROOM I07 Front row, left to right: J. Williams, J. Mallory, N. Raitt, S. Brigode, D. SOPHOMORE CLASS The Sophomores, looking ahead to their Junior year, have been engaged in activities to earn money for the expenses that are synonymous with proms. Several successful dances were held during the winter season. ln the early part of the year they held a flower day when they sold carnations and roses. These projects readily made a profit for them. The class have also been active in the athletic field. Many Sophomore boys were on the J.V.'s and became some of the outstanding players. Also, the Sophomore girls were active in volleyball and basketball and a few became cheerleaders. ROOM 105 Front row, left to right: R. Smith, K. Peck, M. Balschuweit, D. Shultz, I. Mott, K. FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshmen have played an active part in school lite this year. With their advisor, Mr. Kelly, President Dave Russell and his able assistants, Vice President Louie Niera, Secretary Kathy Wright, Treasurer Carol Brill, and Student Council repre- sentatives Bev Westbrook and Barb Bean, they have put their finances on a very sound basis. Among other things, they have held two dances, one called Rim Rhythm and the other co-sponsored by the Juniors. A class bake sale also proved a success. The Freshmen stood up well under the strains of initiation which proved them to be endowed with a sense of humor and sportsmanship. With such attributes, these Freshmen will certainly prosper in their new environment. ROOM 207 Front row, left to right: L. Reed, M. Campbell, N. Hill, M Barto, C. Stiles, J. Guile, N. Haag, C.
