GUILE, Superintendent of Schools PR heritage has given us many' Institutions typically' Americanfl nique to our Nation and Wiay of Life. You who are ahout to leave one of these Institutions. the American High School. have chosen another. Baseball as the theme of your Tom Tom. Bass-hall and lligh School have more in common than many realize. Both had their beginning in the last half of the nineteenth century. and spread throughout the Yation following the Civil War. But of far greater significance. is their similarity of principles. among which one must mention --recognition that ahility' has no race. color. creed or economic status. equal opportunity for all. and that to achieve one must work. These principles have influenced not only' your school and sport life. but will carry' on into the year aheadvin industry, the community' and in the home, Those of you that have learned well the rules of school and sport will have little dilliculty' with the rules of life. A strike out will not defeat you. for you have learned from Basehall the importance of the nwill to win. All of the faculty' wishes vou the best of success in your future life. Sincerely' SIIICLDON Clilhl-I 8 'Q Lggtir 1 Q K. A. VANCE, 0. F. A. Principal ASEBALL is a very appropriate name for the theme of the Tom Tom. because both are leaders in their own fields. Baseball is a symbol of our American life. May you students continue alo11g with your educa- tion ancl attain the heights of this great game. May' you circle the world as one circles the bases, be as well acclaimed and have your name as famous. Wie might say that there are four bases in education from which you may graduate: namely. kindergarten. sixth grade. high school and college. Life is a game mafle up of rules to guide each and every one of us. Adhere to those rules ami you will achieve by yourself where a baseball must be given inertia. May I share with you the following poem4 We canst all play a 1CillIIl-Hg game- Someone is sure lo lose. Ye! we can play so lhat our name No one may flare aeeusej Tha! when the Master Referee Scores against our name, It lL'0IIyl be whether we've ll,'0Il or losl. Bal How Weive Played the Canzef Kmmzrn A. VANCE 9 The Mentors VERY team needs coaching. Even if every player is a star, if teamwork doesn't prevail there will be no winning team. Here is Where our coaches prove their worth. Whether we are stars or rookies, we are taught the value of teamwork and co-operation, which are needed to win. We students must all act as catchers when the faculty is pitching. When we come out of our udugoutsu for a full day of practice, we look toward the managers for incentive. Discouragement comes frequently during our training, but when we are struggling toward Hthirdw We can rest assured that our coaches are there to wave us nhomew. We can count on them for the inspiration to make that ngrand- slam homer when an extra score is needed. Although we can't all be pennant winners, the coaches are always around trying their best to help us make the 4'Hall of Fame . THE FACULTY ROW ONE-Paul Y. R. Andrews, Machine Shop, Mildred Bensley. Safe at home plate with the pennant! Our teachers, the faithful coaches responsible for our attainment of that most coveted pen- nant, the graduation diploma, regard their team as a most promising group to compete with Life in the World Series of Tomorrow. Our captain, the class president, heartily congratulates each player as we trot off the educational ball field. Our managers, Miss Goodrich and Mr. Collings, are proud that their efforts have successfully guided our team to a victory over our most distinguished and diflicult opponent, the New York State Regents. Our scores, posted on report cards after each base hit, reflect the pleasing batting average of our team as we scored hit upon hit and won each base in rotation-freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. We won them alll Realizing at last the merit of our batting averages, we wish to thank our parents, the team mascots, for providing the encouragement and incentive necessary to accept victory or defeat in a sportsmanlike manner. And now, as we go forth to compete in the World Series of Life, we are sad, but yet exultant, knowing that our places will not be vacant, but filled with a new and perhaps greater team, the Youth of America, having the same hopes, the same despairs, and the same obstacles to surmount. We wish them success with all our hearts, and as we pass through the gateway of our stadium, Owego Free Academy, and see far ahead the shining reward of victory in the biggest game of all- the game of Life-may the greatest umpire of all, our Cod in Heaven. look down and say, '4lVly children, you have played the game and played it wellg so, may you dwell in the House of the Lord foreverfi DEAR FELLOW CLASSMATES, Our years in high school can be compared to spring training in baseball. The teachers have coached us in playing the game and have now put us on our own. Whether we get on base or strike out is yet to be determined. No matter how the games goes, we shall always recall with joy the good times we have had at 0.F.A. l shall cherish all of your friendships and remember the fine cooperation you have given me. It has been a great honor to be your president. Now may I wish you the best of luck, and may Cod bless you and be at your side always. Sincerely, lim Skellenger SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT 5, . THE members of the Junior Class, have now reached third base and are working diligently to cross home plate which is graduation. We are grateful to the coaches. our parents and teachers, who have helped us reach third. With their continued help. we are confident of scoring for O. F. A. We, the graduating class of '56, are proud of the contributions that the members of our class have made. both in the field of scholar- ship and in extra-curricular activities. High on our batting order are Barry Billings, Linda Brown, Francis Gray, Dorothy Kemp. Richard Morey. Ralph Thomas, and Doris Very. In athletics, we also have a high percentage. Half of our football and basketball varsity squads were composed of juniors, as were our wrestling. baseball. track. and tennis teams. Also. four junior girls were on the varsity basketball cheering squad. Then, too, there are the other activities, such as band, orchestra, concert chorus, choir, dra- matics and Junior Red Cross, in which we juniors took an active part. However, we juniors agree that if it were not for the excellent counsel of our advisers. Miss Curtis and Mr. Truman, our class would not have been one of the most successful. With their help we put on one of the biggest record dances in the history of the school. For St. Patrickis Day we made shamrock favors-the sale of which turned out to be a good money- making project. We also held a very successful bake sale. Last, but far from least, was the Prom, the biggest single event of the year. Now as most of us head for home, we leave with the hope of having made a good im- pression for those on first and second. We are confident that, with hard work, we shall make one of the greatest scores that the O. F. A. has ever had. ROOM 107 front flllf, lf!! tu right- .l. Lovw, N. Halliday. ll. Kc-mp. lf. Nlills. ll. Keystone Year ET LYS compare our school life to the great game of baseball. When we were in grade school. we were in the minor leagues. ln .lunior High School we were promoted to the second string in the major leagues. But. now the going was getting rough. Our amhition was to get on the first string team. Finally we made it at the end of the eighth grade. and each of us was given a chance to decide what position in the field he wanted. This, of course. meant choosing a special course. The first year we started working in earnest to make at least first base. ln other words. we were working on the points that would deter- mine the hit or strike-out we might make in our future careers. At the end of our freshman year we were on first base. Then as sophomores with our instructors drilling the fundamentals of the game into us, we were striving toward second base, still specializing in order to hecome more proficient in our chosen courses. After our regular work was done, we began to explore other fields in order to broaden our interests and skills. lVlanv of the sophomores are in U. F. Afs concert chorus. orchestra or band. Some of the girls in this vearls Sophomore Class have made very good cheerleaders and majorettes. Some of the hoys have made their mark in sportsg basketball. wrestling, etc. All of our sophomore activities have been well planned, largely because of the very good work of our adviser. Mr. Browng our class president. Pete Malloryg our vice-president Gary llootg our secretary. Allan Cowe and our treasurer, Alice liussell. School. like basehall. is based on the in- dividual's ability as well as that of the team. Vile are learning to Hplay the game and whether we win or lose we will try to lrecome good sportsmen in every sense of the word. HOONI 108 ' ' ' ' illifi l'rnul run. lv!! In Hgh! lx. Others weren't quite so lucky and needed another turn at bat, but we all made it one way or another. We elected Cary Kuhns captain of our team. and Mr. Bradley adviser. The rest of the coaching staff consisted of Caroline Simons, vice-presidentg Janet Nlilks, secretaryg Cay Petzold, treasurer, and Sherill Emerson and Dale Leonard, Student Council representatives. We supported our schools athletics hy the making and selling of booster tags. ln sports and music. several of our classmates exhibited outstanding talent. The good sports had lots of fun during freshman initiation. We soon discovered, however, that our ninth year was not going to be all sports and recreation. Everyone had a chance to explore different fields. which helped us plan our future careers. As we stand on first base we realize that the most difiicult part of our jour- ney to home plate and success is yet to come. We all wish to reach second hase without being stranded. but to do this, we know we must utilize all our speed and drive. We hope that our four years in O. F. A good player for either game must acquire skill and knowl- edge. observe good sportsmanship. and be willing to accept responsibility. Promotion in baseball depends on a satis- factory batting average. We also must earn a satisfactory average in the basic subjects which are English Part II. English Part l, Math, and Citizenship Education in order to be promoted to the major league next fall. We must keep our eyes on the ball if we attain this goal. A high percentage of our enrollment have been active in extra-curricular activities. These, plus our other subjects. have taught us team- work and laid the groundwork for more active citizenship when we enter high school. Student Control Day is our big memory item of the year. DUCATION is like the great game of base- ball! Vve have come from the sandlots of elementary education to the little league of seventh grade. We are conscious that now we will be obeying the rules exactly and making fewer strikes and errors than in the past. The pennant, our diploma. will be ours only after four hard years of training. The teacher as our skillful manager guides us in mastering our various subjects. Each term or inning we are taught to have fewer errors and more home runs. During the seventh inning stretches, we enjoy extra-curricular activitiesg such as, music. li- brary and gym. Vve have interesting and educa- Mi - t tional assemblies and class meetings to make the game exciting. Football and basketball are the hits of the game. Our wide assortment of subjects are guiding us to be more skillful players in the game of life. If we made fouls in our examinations, we were straightened out by the umpire. Visual Education is an enjoyable addition to our class work. Every game that is played is a further step toward the major league. As we learn and our batting averages improve. we hope to be playing in the World Series. Then the ultimate reward. our diploma. will be awarded to us. ROOM 206 Frou! mir. left to righl-ll, llenry .l. Our three ahle coaches are Mrs. Ellis. man- ager of advertising. sales and typing staffs: Mr. lfllis, director of production. art and photo- graphic departments: and Miss Hamilton. su- pervisor of the write-ups for the Tom Tom. First up to hat is the sales staff. which suc- cessfully sells our yearlwook to students and teachers alike. Through their eiiorts a point is gained. Next up is the advertising staff whit-ti works xery diligently to collect the funds that make our Tom Tom possilile. Thus. another home run is made. Our very capalmle umpire is the senior section. It performs many important duties such as helping to select the cover and theme of our yearbook. Through the teamwork of these ahle staffs and the hacking of the secretarial practice class we are victorious in bringing to you one of the finest ycarhooks we have ever had. Hit 'em Hard 5 YOI all probahly know, the Uwego indians' football team of '54 wasn't as strong as in reeent years. The Indians lost 15 players. 13 of whom were lettermen. This left a well depleted squad with hut 4 lettermen for Coach Deeh to develop. Although the team didn't score a win until the last game, the young hray es went down with a determined spirit. The team had weight. speed and other factors that would have enabled them to he a winning team. hut they lacked that all essential spark at the proper time. Yext year's team should lie. and we hope it will he. one of the hest in 0.F.A.'s football history. The team will he well balanced with a swift hacckfield and an experieneed line in front ol them. Advancing Around the Bases l'llS season was one of hard luck for the lndians. Their record was eight wins and ten losses. Although the team was not a title contender. they turned out to be spoilers. For the first time since l932 we beat Vlfaverly 60-57. ln the last game Uwego defeated Elmira Heights. This victory prevented the Heights from win- ning the league title. We placed three in the league scoring race this year. Stan Sibley was third with 176 points. Cary Root and Tom Ash also made the top ten. Also. this Year. Stan Silwlev and Tom Beauter were selected to he members of the Southern Counties' League All-Star team. Cary Root and Tom Ash received honorahle mention. Much credit is due Coach Deelv for the work he did with the hoys. The J. Vfs finished their season in fine tradition by becoming league champions. The noon hour basketball league, directed by Coach Brown, consisted of twenty-two teams. with a hundred and twenty-five students taking part. There was a Seventh Grade League, an Eighth Grade League, and the Senior High League. Each league has an all star unit of players picked according to score and participation in the games. The all star unit plays the team that wins the league. These teams give students, who canlt take part in the Varsity or Junior Varsity Basketball. a chance to participate in a school sport. Coach Brown did a fine job in molding a young team that gained the respect of their opponents. The Indians opened the season with a 6-5 loss to lthaca. They were on the short end of the score six more times. including a hitter 4--3 defeat hy arch-rival Waverly'. Only twice did the Indians taste victory as they compiled a 2-7 record. They defeated Elmira Heights and Newark Valley. Although the season was far from successful the players gained valuahle experience for a better team in the future. F lashing Spikes AST year the 0. F. A. track team had a highly successful season with a record of 4 wins and Z2 losses. Jim Russell. Ed Miller. Dave Hallett, and Ray l.atini represented O. F. A. in the Section IV tournament at Cornell. ,lim Russell also went to the state tournament at Wlest Point. Jim Russell anrl Henry Blaasch set new school records in the 4-40 and mile runs respectively.
