Friday June 2, 1951. was a memorable day for the graduating class of january, 1952. It was on that day that the seniors embarked on one of the most exciting voyages of their lives. That voyage was none other than the Senior Class Trip to Bear Nlountain, New York, The trip, which had long been anticipated by the seniors, was one ofthe most significant occurrences of their school life. The sun was shining hrightly on that eventful day as the conf gregation of yawning seniors who trooped sleepily into Reading Ter' minal. Their lethargy was ahandoned, however, when they beheld the special train which was to take them to Jersey City. Accomf panying the seniors were many faculty memhers. Vv'hen they had reached Jersey City, the seniors hoarded a swank ultrafmodern ship. The ship, which was called the k'Peter Stuyf vesantf' had all the conveniences of home. During the long sail up the Hudson River. everyhody ate, drank, hought souvenirs, and danced to the music of Mr. Contini's Swing Band. The hoat passed many places of interest including SingfSing Prison, West Point Academy, and the many skyscrapers along the New York coast. Numerous photographs were taken both of these interesting places and of the seniors. After spending nearly nve hours ahoard ship, the travelers reached their destination. At Bear Mountain, the seniors enjoyed rowing, swimming, horseback riding, mountain climbing, and bearfhunting. After participating in the amusements which were at their disposal, the seniors ate under the shady trees. They had a great deal of fun as they shared their lunch with friends and ants. All too soon it was time to bid Bear Mountain farewell and board the ship for home, While listening to the divine music of the Swing Band, the tired but happy seniors watched the glorious sunset on the waters. Later, as the train sped homeward, quiet reigned hecause nearly everyone had fallen asleep. Finally, the contented seniors bade farewell to smiling friends and went merrily on their way. ' Thivtyfnine 2 5 A CLASS HISTORY BABY BORN TO O.H.S. FAMILY Philadelphia, Feb. 4, 1949 QAPJ-Mr. and Mrs. O. H. S. of 59t-h Ei Lancaster Ave. are proud to announce the birth of a new class, January, '52. Dr. Bill CfL-IfM-E delivered the infant, assisted by Nurse Edna Green. The child weighed 400 pupils at birth. January '52 will be guided through her first term by President Wayne Rayield and VicefPresident Rhoda Abrams. A diary of her progress will be kept by Secretary Eileen Cohen and Treasurer Edwin Aaron will handle her financial problems. Jan proved to be the Hfth blessing received by her parents this term, for their other children have brought them four championship teamsg namely, basketball, baseball, crossfcountry, and track. In order to celebrate her arrival, Overbrook's immediate family, the faculty, put on a riotous show. Aunt Etta Pettyjohn stole the show and Baby Jan loved every minute of it. Following this joyous event, the months passed quickly and Jan soon became accustomed to her new surroundings. At the age of seven mont-hs she entered a new phase of her life. Her guidance was taken over by President Morton Slakoif, VicefPresident Rhoda Abrams, Secretary Eileen Cohen, and Treasurer Burton Stein. Jan bought her first pair of rompers in her favorite colors, maroon -and gray. The bouncing baby took her Hrst step and hit her Hrst teacher. Now she was on her way! JAN '52 MAKES DEBUT Philadelphia, 1950 QAPJ-Jan. '52's name first appeared in print on the Mopsy Class Pin designed by Rose Penny Brein. Plans for her debut were formed by President Wayne Rayiield, VicefPresi dent Barbara Valentine, Secretary Charlotte Gibson, and Treasurer Marvin Sternberg. During her ado lescence, members of the Overbrook family enter tained the public with such memorable productions as My Man Godfrey, A Waltz Dream, and The Red Mill. The opening of the long-awaited school store formed another exciting event. Like 1 f f Forty all adolescents, Jan suffered growing pains, such as, throwing board erasers, and wisefcracking in class' rooms. Jan had now matured, becoming part of the Overbrook Family. JAN '5 2 GRADUATES HIGH SCHOOL The elated parents of Jan '5 2 are celebrating the graduation of their beloved daughter. This joyous event took place on January 24, 1952. During her last moments as an Overbrookite Jan easily recalled memories of her last and most wonderful year . . . her trip to Bear Moun' tain-the water fights on the train, the card games on the boat, the rowing on the lake, the capable officers who worked tirelessly in her behalf: President Morton Slakoif, Vice-President Rhoda Abrams, Secretary Charlotte Gibson, and Treasurer Marvin Sternbergg Editor-in'Chief of Beacon Joanne Pokras, News Editor Eileen Cohen, the school om' cers: President Stanton Mossg VicefPresident Eileen Cohen, President of Boys' A.A. Richard Orlog President of Girls' A.A. Harriet Costellog Editor of Record Book Shannon Poolerg Chief Justice of Tribunal Emanual Gold . . . the most wonderful prom in the world-the glittering lights, the soft music of Clarence Fuhrman's orchestra, the parties after the dance . . . the fabulous growth of the football team with its new coaches, Len Kolenda and Irv Brody spurring them on to greater victories . . . the orange and black decorated cars which formed a huge motor caravan to the big West Philly game where we held the game to a 0'0 score . . . the -big change in the school 'when our well-liked principal, Bill C-L'I-MfE retired and was replaced by the very capable vicefprincipal H. Morgan Ruth . . . the moving dedication of the memorial for Overbrook's war dead . . . and last but not least, the hilarious Senior Show . . . These were the last thoughts that passed through Jan's mind as she sat on the new graduation stands. But the members of the Class of January '52 should have no qualms about leaving Overbrookg t-hey have only to remember that good classes never die, they just fade away. is Nix N N? ': sm Eg NW S?
