The returning hoys were Lefty Summers, pitcher. and Fred Douglas and james Nania, inhelders. The complete Cverhrook roster was as follows. ,lim Ivlurphy, shortstopg Eugene McCrue, left field: Lefty Summers, pitcher, jim Nania, third hase: Tom Fisher, catcher, Earl Cornish, second hase: Fred Douglas, first haseg Dan Pleat, center Held: Bernard Steinherg, right field, Harold Lear, outf fielderg Ivlilton Brown, second hase and outfield: Arthur Coldherg, outfield: Rhuhur Miller, pitcher: jay Love, pitcher: Rohert Haftel, pitcher: Ivlartin Skomsky, piteherg Anthony Saechetti, piteherg and .Ioe Weisz. pitcher. Friends Central, La' salle, Northeast, Gratz, Franklin, Dohhins, Bok, Wesit Phila., Roxhorough, Olney, Masthaum, Cer' mantown, Frankford, Central, Bartram, South Phila. and Lincoln, Seventyfone , ASKETB LL Witli the loss of Jackie Moore and Wyfcliff Martin, the Panther five was left with not one good, experienced. hig man. Mr. Sam Cozcn could count on Gene Avclla for just a half year. and the remaining three memhers of the '49, '50 championship for hut one season. This necessitated the change from a tall team to a small fast one, which had to rely on speed and aggressivcncss. The Hilltoppers Hnished their prefseason tuncfup games with wins over So. Fast Catholic, Bristol, and Reading, and one loss to Allentown. Starting the league season, the Panf thers scored nine straight victories over Masthaum, West Phila., Germantown, Dohhins, Roxhorough, Central, Bok, Clney, and Bartram. After losing a close game to Northeast, they toppled Gratz rand Frankford. The loss to Southern! with Barry Goldstein sinking a halffcourt set in the last seconds--will always he a topic for dehate. They then heat Lincoln and lost to Ben Franklin, The memhers of the team were forwards Hal Lear, Dave Van Osten, Gene Avellia, Al Meislich, centers Fred Doug' las, Harvey Brodsky, and Dave Feldman, guards Roland Summers, Howard Kattler, Al Meltzer, and Nick Micarrelli. Seventyftwo V' S,r1.n FGOTB LL The Overbrook eleven had a rather fruitless time trying to gather a victory during the 1950 season. This aggregation of Panthers was a spirited, snappy, young team which played inspiring but losing football. In reviewing the team's poor showing, it must be pointed out that we had the lightest team in the public leaguefnan average of 1571f2 pounds per man. This year the two platoon system was used for the first time at Overbrook .and while the offense didn't fare so well, the defense played great ball against overwhelming odds. The Hilltoppers were again eoaeh-ed by ,lohn Rau and assisted by Leonard Kolenda. The line consisted of ends Mat Brown, Bob Spilove, Randy Fisher, Bob Anapol, .lim Clark, and Fred Hunterg guards Herby Spivak, Dan Nlansolino, Frank Mziletteri, Tony Carroza, Brooks Early, Simon Abram' son, Jimmie Keys, Roland D'Ortone, and Norman Feinsteing and eenters Norman Colbert, Steve Roeehetti, and Niek Gallo. The baekfield was eomposed of -lim Fiddler, Tom Brown, Ross Frazier, John Buggs, Tony laeobueei, Al Mazza, Bill Miles, Tony Carroza, and Charlie Owens. Seventyfthvee CROSS COU TRY Mr. Wilfred Collin's dream of bringing the City Crossf country Championship and the Bulletin Cup to Overbrook finally came true. Under his coaching, the Hilltoppers slaughtered West Catholic 44 to 121. Eight out of ten top finishers wore the orange and black. Bill Griggs led the pack followed by Gene Brodie, Herb Bruce. and Al Entrickcn, Griggs time of l2Zfll.3 was one second off the record. Other pointsfmakers for Overbrook were: 7U-Gilbert Laws, 3- - jim Montague, 9-fDan johnson, and lOfHerb Rogers. The team also won the Public League Championship for the fourth straight year, They took eight out of the first fourteen places and produced the individual winner, Bill Griggs, who covered the ZH, mile course in l2:O'Z.7 minutes. Following Griggs in second and third place were Eugene Brodie and Herb Bruce, respectively. Other outstanding run' ners were: Al Entricken, Dan johnson, Gil Laws, Herb Rogers, james Montague, Joe Greene, Ted Jennings, Sam Phillips and Aldis Riaymond. The harriers also took their four regular season meets and finished way out in front in the Public High invitation meet. Seventyffouv TR CK TEAM Cverbrook's track team tried for its fourth consecutive Public High Championship. Among the veterans returning this year were Bill Griggs, a great milerg Herb Gelb in the pole vault, John Doswell, a high jumper and middle distance man, Alan Goldberg, a shotputterg and Ted Jennings, a hurdler. They opened up the season by beating Southern on April 18. The next Wednesday, the Panthers nosed out Gratz, Central, and Frankford. In the next two weeks they followed by downing such teams as Ben Franklin, Wesit Phila., Dobbins, Bok, Northeast, and Lincoln. On Mzxy 16, Overbrook was nosed out by Bartram. Then the Panthers finished a successful season by ending second in the Public High League Championship. Central won with 257 points followed closely by Cverbrook with 25316 and Bartram 247. Outstanding for the Hill-toppers were Bill Griggs and Ted Jennings. Griggs won the mile and half mile events, while Jennings set the record in the 120 yard high hurdles. The four mile relay team, our 480 shuttle relay team, our two mile relay team, and our high jump team took first place in their respective events. Seventyfflve SPGRTS 1.0 . MQ COACHES 1 Mr. Rau, Mr. Weiler, Mr. Cozen, Mr. Kistenmacher, Mr. Kolenda, Mr. Collins, Mr. Brody. For many years sports fans have wondered whether the coach makes the team or the team makes the coach. The success of our coaching staff seems to prove the former. Mr. Wilfred Collin is, perhaps. -the most successf ful track and cross country coach in the city. Each year, despite the loss of experienced and valuable seniors, Mr. Collin seems to inspire his teams to victory. Mr. Sam Cozcn, our varsity haskethall and junior varsity hasehall mentor. has also hccn very success' ful. In his four years of coaching haskethall, he has led the teams to three championships, and this year piloted our hoys into a surprising fifth place finish. Mr. john C. Kistenmacher, our hasehall coach, realized his amhition when Cverhrook won the Puhlic High Championship last year. With 25 years of coaching at O.H.S., 'kMr. is an astute judge of haschall talent. Mr. john Rau, vvho has had to work with foothall teams despite serious handicaps, is also an invaluahle aid to the shotput division of the track team. Besides he also coached J.V. basketball. Mr. Wzmrren Weiler, who was forced to retire as coach of varsity haskethall several years ago hecause of illness, now ahly coaches the cadet basket' hall and liasehall teams. Mr. Leonard Kolenda and Mr. Irving Brodie, the two latest additions to our athletic department, have fit well into the scheme of things. Mr. Kolenda, who has worked with the varsity football team and will take over the reins next year. is an instructor of the high jump. Mr. Brodie directs our j.V. foot' hall squad.
