SN! W Wg. 1. 1 ITHE J!INUflHY1945 ill E E ll ll ll ,Puhlishell hy the Class nf January 1945 nf the Uverhrnnli Hiqh Sehnnl at Philadelphia Pennsylvania FUHEWIJHIJ We, the members of the Class of Ianuary l945, may truly call ourselves the War Class, for we entered Overbrook High School at the very beginning of the present conflict. Many of our classmates have already left our midst to join the ranks of those fighting for our priceless heritages of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, and before long many more will go. It is our earnest hope that they shall not have fought in vain. We pray that from the ashes of this con- flict a new and better civilization will arise, a civilization of peace, with freedom and op- portunity for all. The stepped-up course of physical education, spurred on by the Schools at War program, has applied to the girls as well as to the boys. Gym periods have been increased in number, and physical iitness has become the keynote of school life. In addition to the required course, the Girls' A. A. presents extra-curricular activities to its sports-minded members. Participation in these competitive clubs promotes good sportsman- ship and provides the exercise and recreation necessary to the best kind of all-round living. Members of the Swimming Club will tell you, Anybody can learn to swim. And they can, for the club has special classes to suit different abilities-beginner, intermediate, or advanced. 1 mag K N. I wk 4 , t 1---1 ' - . gf E22 S GIRLS' SPUHT5 Outstanding swimmers make up the first and second varsity teams, and are eligible to work for their lifesaver's badge. The club is divided into the Orange and Black teams, which com- pete for points. You, too, can bowl l50! All you need is the practice and instruction provided by the Bowl- ing Club. Since bowling has become a favorite American sport, this is one of the most popular of clubs. Skill and dexterity are developed by the game and some good wholesome enjoy- ment is provided. During the spring terms, tennis enthusiasts go all out for the Tennis Club. It is one of the few clubs allowing outdoor exercise. Members receive instruction beforehand, and later com- petitive games are played to determine O. H. S.'s Alice Marble. -si. i Girls with exceptional ability in gym com- pose the Leaders Club. The group meets during school hours to learn and perfect its exercises and aims. It is from these leaders that assist- ants are selected to aid physical ed. teachers in gym classes. The leaders wear a large orange L on a black circle on their gym suits. For exercise of a slightly less strenuous na- ture, the Round Robin Club takes first honors. Badminton, table-tennis, and archery are some of the activities offered. Whether it be a bull's eye or a little white ball that the girls are try- ing to hit, their interest is equally high, for each member wants to excel in at least one particu- lar game. Champions are determined by elimi- nation tournaments. Speaking of tournaments, we see some very exciting ones when the volleyball and basket- ball teams play. Interclass competition is very keen and the girls play for their class with every muscle and nerve alert. Membership is entirely voluntary, and girls who are really in- terested need no urging to try out for their team. The Dancing Club, too, deserves a word of praise for its excellent performances. The mem- bers learn ballet, tap, and specialty dances. Their poise and grace present an extremely pleasant picture. Flach term, awards in the form of monograrns and medals are presented to members of the Athletic Association according to the points they have accumulated by membership in these clubs. Pins are also given to the out- standing member of the Bowling, Dancing, Swimming, and Leaders' Clubs, respectively. Yes, participation in girls' sports at Over- brook has certainly been a most healthful and enjoyable experience for Miss Hilltopper. FUUTB!-lLL Coach Iohn Rau's grid men, noted for a classy offense, provided their followers with some of the most thrilling football ever wit- nessed in the Public High League. Adaptation of the T formation in '43 resulted in the team capturing second place, the highest position an Overbrook team has achieved since its en- trance into the league. West Philly ruined our otherwise unblemished record by defeating us, 8-U. Individual star of the team was Al Papa, a member of our class who enlisted in the Navy in the beginning of his senior year. Papa earned a place on the All-Public Team by vir- tue of his all-around brilliance in every phase of the sport. The team had two of the finest ends in the city in Elmer Green and Stan Kitch- ner. Green also earned a place on the All- Public Team, while Kitchner received honor- able mention. Tony Nicolella at quarterback was noted as one of the best passers and open- field blockers in the league. In l944, our inexperienced team only won two games. Once again the Orange and Black was defeated by West Philly, l3-l2. Co-captain Stan Kitchner, rounding out his third year on the varsity. scored both Panther touchdowns, beina on the receiving end of two well exe- cuted forward passes thrown by Melvin East. This was the first time an Overbrook team scored twice against West Philly. Dom Savine, used mainly as a blocker in the beginning of the season, blossomed forth as a fine open-field runner in the Bartram aame. scoring two touch- downs in his finale. Iohn Williams' sterling line play was also instrumental in the victory over Bartram. With numerous holdovers and fine re- placements coming up from the second team, Hilltoppers can look forward to a victorious fu- ture on the gridiron. BUYS SPUHTS During our stay at Overbrook, followers of basketball had the privilege of watching the well-drilled teams of coach Warren Weiler. Some of the brigtest stars in Public High com- petition wore the Orange and Black. They were Snitz Osherow, Hook Wallace, Tom Iordan, Buz Thompson, Herb Dickler, and Lew Stone. a member of our own class. In the last two years, the Hilltoppers did not fail to gain the Public High playoffs, where they were rated high by rivals of championship caliber. This year the team shapes up nicely. Al- though Overbrook was deprived ot a great basketball player and a fine citizen through the untimely death of Aaron Bodek, and coach Weiler lost seven lettermen through gradua- tion, he still had a lew ol last year's players. including Lew Stone. In addition, good ball players have come up from last year's line second team, among them Reds Rosenbaum. With a nucleus of returning lettermen, and ca- pable teammates, this year Hilltoppers are rep- resented by a basketball team that will become the class of the Public League. BASKETBALL or if X 5 ,Dt ,ri , l TR!-lllli Once again, in l944, Overbrook's cindermen proved to be the class of the city. Bill Collin, in his first year as track mentor, followed in the footsteps of his worthy predecessors. Seniors Stan Kitchner, Mel East, Al Hunter, Dom Schiavello, Charles Mozzone, George Washington, and Iohn Lamparella played a major role in the team's successg but such names as Ken Odom, Don Snyder, Elmer Green, and Roswell Brown will long be remem- bered for their sterling performances. After sweeping aside all opponents, the Panthers came roaring into the Public High Championships to defeat Central by the score of l8UVz-l79 in the most Closely contested schoolboy meet ever staged at Franklin Field. Hilltoppers will long remember those tense moments before the final score was announced. This successful season was con- cluded by the decisive triumph over West Cath- olic in the City Championships. IIHIISS IIUUNTBY This past season, the Orange and Black was represented by a Cross Country team which was one of the finest in the Public High League. During the regular season, the Hilltoppers won three meets and lost one. Iohn Lamparella, the mainstay of the team, twice won the individual honors. As was the case in the two previous years, Coach Collin's work was made more difficult by constant injuries. However, underclassmen, namely, Synder, Borck and the Brown brothers, did a creditable job of filling up the rmiks.
