Multitudes of people were suddenly stricken by the dreadful blight. and great was the destruction. Few were spared. Human beings wandered through the streets, starving and unclad. Fam- ilies were torn apart. Everywhere public buildings were closed, and more people joined the ranks of the afflicted. Desperate and frantic attempts were made to avert the dread menace, called Depression, but the frightful pestilence only tightened its grip. and everywhere despair reigned. Only in one nation was there no pestilence. This tribe lived in the far north. on a part of an island. They were a thrifty. economical people. and were distinguished by the name Caledonians. For them the monster Depres- sion had no terrors. They went about their work, ignor- ing the derisive ridicule of an envious world. And their lot was blessed, and while the world writhed, they were content and happy, for they were wise. But 'fScotchmenl' have their light moments.
