There is a Silver Lining N EXT to dying at the proper moment. few things are more important than being born at the right time. No tragedy is more bitter than the frustration of a Savonarola or a VVilson, no triumph more striking than that of a Luther or a Napoleon. Let me therefore congratulate this class upon being born-and accord- ingly graduated-at an auspicious moment. You have completed your secondary education in a period of economic inse- curity and actual privation. but you have completed it. Some of you have clung frantically to passing grades while bearing upon what should have been care-free shoulders the weight of family responsibility. while devoting long, weary hours to that worthiest of extra-curricular activities-the game of providing food for hungry mouths. Most of you have seen your amusements, your clothes, your participation in school projects curtailed. All of you have been distracted to some degree by the universal uncertainty. And yet. you are fortunate. You have spent these trying years in preparation for life instead of watching the ruin of an established life. If you are planning further education, you find colleges eager to welcome you which a few years ago were making entrance requirements impossible for the average student to meet. If you are looking for employment. you enter a business world which is on the upturng you are ready to ride the new long wave which is slowly gathering momentum. Above all, you will come to maturity in a world that has been washed partially clean of materialism. cynicism, egotismg a world that will pay dividends to work rather than to gambling, to ability rather than to bluff. For all these reasons I congratulate you, and I bid you farewell with thc hope and the assurance that you are prepared to play a worthy part in the building of the new age. w-Ay K 5 f-,Hy Q vans 'ix hay, B V Q .3 ,- f , f I .I ,ii 1 S 5 Q XM?
