YVe sincerely hope that you will all learn a lesson from this war which lnay add beyond measure to your ability to appreciate life and the more worth- while things in it. May you learn that the more beautiful things of life may be found in the most everyday places. Let us borrow a slogan from the Swedish Arts for Crafts Society and say, More beautiful things for everyday life. In this slogan we refer to concrete ob jects. Shifting our line of thought to abstract things, let us not fail to believe that the most worthwhile things ot' life don't just happen but are achieved by hard work and care- ful planning. QQ- 'Bb mf' 41 R J ir ir 'A' 'A' 1' if SPCRTS 1 Q E CHI ,.y'l V' A if xi,-Qi J For nine years Ouachitonians have been watching Coach Walton's Tigers slowly but surely gain superiority on the Arkansas Gridiron. ln 1941 Ouachita ran through Hen- derson, Teachers and Tech twice without al- lowing a score. Last fall the beginning of the 1942 season found the Tigers eqally as strong as the previous year while the others seemed to be weaker than before. At this iuncture, a little more than one week before the first scheduled games, the presidents of the colleges met and decided to call off all inter-collegiate athletics because of trans- portation difficulties. lt was only after a flood of persuasive re- quests, by students, Arkadelphia fans, alumni, and members of the Board of Trus- tees, that the administration of Ouachita de- cided to continue inter-collegiate athletics in the sincere belief that it provided a motivat- ing power for a spirit of unity at Ouachita. Coach W. l. Bill Walton Although the handicaps to be overcome in the 1942 football season were probably the greatest ever faced by Coach Walton, the recard made by his Tigers was the best in his nine-year tenure at Ouachita. Before the season was much more than underway the major problem switched over from build- ing a winning team to finding good compe- tition for games. The result was that Walton had to schedule games on less than one week's notice, but the record shows that the Tigers won eight while losing only one. They defeated the state champion teams from Louisiana and Nebraska and had no college challengers in Arkansas. Coach Walton's nine-year record is no less than remarkable when it is considered that Ouachita is the only denominational college competing with the state colleges of Arkan- sas. His teams have annexed three cham- pionships and only once has Ouachita fin- ished below second under Coach Walton. 1-le left March 15 to do his part in the Navy for the duration, but his successful coaching career has just begun. SUME OI: SEASON - The record of the 1942 Tigers has already found its place in history - winning eight games while losing only one: piling up a to- tal of 323 points toltheir opponents' 195 de- feating the champion college teams in Ne- braska and Louisiana while retaining the Arkansas championshipg rated the best small college team in the United States by Litken- haus' and Williamson's National ratings: and selection of Cecil Kemp and Carl Allen for Honorable Mention on the Little All- American team. The rating of Dr. E. E. Litkenhaus gave the Ouachita Tigers better rating than such big time schools as Carnegie Tech, Rutgers, Vir- ginia U., V. M. l., Wyoming U., Arizona U., Kansas U., George Washington, University of Maryland, Amherst, University of Arkan- sas, all of which is something to tell the grandchildren about! ' November 26 OUACHITA ,...,s,,s,,,,, L- 64 PERU CNEBQ STATE- ...,.L,L, O The Bobcats, Nebraska College champ- ions, decided to stay in their own back-yard after this Thanksgiving Day Celebration for Ouachita. TRACK AND TENNIS Four Tiger Thinclads entered State A. A. U. meet last year and each made an impres- sive record, considering the absence of any pre-meet competition. Billy Gill East compet- ed in the hurdle events against a Camp Rob- inson entry from New York University and won first in the low and second in the high hurdles. I. W. Cotton Iones won first in the Iavelin throw by breaking the record with a heave of l8l feet, 7 inches. Deno Nichols won second in the 100-yard dash and fourth in the 220, while Aubrey Park took second in the 880. The tennis team of Iohnny Hall, Thomas Keys, Daniel Grant, and Wiley Caldwell had a creditable season and won matches over Arkansas State Teachers and Hendrix while losing to Henderson. In two matches with Little Rock Iunior College they tied one and lost one. This same squad, reinforced by Lawson lacks was back again in l943, but the other colleges were not participating in inter-collegiate athletics. ifljyfyf' bf, . ,wifi Coach W. W. Bradshaw In 'three years as basketball coach and director of athletics, Coach Bradshaw has made an increasing- ly successful record each year. Not only have the exploits of his basketeers gained in momentum, but also he has gained the respect and confidence of students, faculty members, and sports fans-local and statewide. They respect him as a square shoot- er, and appreciate the clean type of sportsmanship he instills into the athletes. With a squad lacking in height but loaded with ability, Bradshaw built a team that lost only once against Arkansas opponents, and that to the Univer- sity. When numerable troubles arising, almost caus- ed a breakup of the team just before the State A. A. U. Tournament, it was largely due to the leadership of Bradshaw that the squad stayed together and won the state tournament in a walkaway. Next year Coach Bradshaw will not only have his hands full as Director of Athletics both for Guachita Students and the Air Corps men, but will succeed Coach Wal- ton as the head football coach. ALL-STATE y'ffi?,-ff 2 51,052 0 ,, if Third Consecutive Year ioHNNY rUHoUErtoN Monotony is usually avoided by the Ouachiton- ian, but this is one case where exception to the rule is permissible. For the third straight year Iohnny Furqueron impressed the sports fans with his great ability for ball handling, passing, shooting, and guarding, to such an extent that he was again elect- ed to the All-Tournament team at the State A. A. U. contest. LOUIS GENE NICHOLS Denon is the other Tiger who was made the All- State Selection for three straight years. Although his scoring power usually overshadows all of his other abilitiesg his coolness during a game is a steadying factor for the whole team. He led the Bengals in scoring a gain this season. BASKETBALL SQUAD RESUME OF THE SEASON Before the basketball season began, it was hoped that the other colleges would compete, since there was less problem of transporta- tion than in football, and it was especially hoped that Henderson would play the Tigers in intercity games since crossing the ravine was the only transportation problem to be solved. However, the colleges didn't respond, and neither of these hopes was fulfilled, causing Coach Bradshaw to watch his quin- tet grow listless while running rough-shod over the independent teams of Arkansas. The record against slate competilion shows that the Tigers won twelve games with only only one loss, which was to the University of Arkansas before Christmas with only three of the Bengals starting line-up on hand. The only other losses were close ones to out-of- state opponents, East Texas State Teachers and Memphis Naval Training Station. For the second time in three years Ouach- ita won the State A. A. U. Tournament, aver- aging better than BO points per game. They won in the finals 75-42, over the Wcrthen Bankers who had put out the Henderson Bed- die intra-mural team in the semi-finals. Coach Bradshaw then took six Tigers to the Nation- al Collegiate Tournament in Kansas City, and with a two-day ride, seven in one car, as their only preparation for the first game, they lost to the crack quintets from South- western College of Winfield, Kansas.
