— Perhaps the final preservation of the beauty and the bounty of the Earth will be left to our generation. Apparently bygone generations have essentially never felt so strongly. Only the poets, philosophers and a few others in the past have spoken of the dangers. E. B. White has said, “Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would stand a better chance of survival if we accomodate ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively instead of skeptically and dictatorially.” The Argus staff of 1972 decided to illustrate the beauty and wonder of our existence through the seasonal changes of our lives. From the beautiful autumn colors to the whiteness of winter and the awakening of spring we see students accomodating themselves to the surroundings which have been provided by nature. Head coach Bob Warren stated, “Even though we had a losing record, I was pleased with our improvement and progress. I feel improvement is more important than a winning record, although its nice to win.” The team was led by senior Dean Sandell. Sandell who was elected team captain and most valuable, set school records in the mile, 4:43.8, and two mile 10:02. Sandell, junior Steve Hinebaugh and sophomore Mike Waskowiak were the only letter winners. Waskowiak also set a new sophomore mile record with a 5:00.5 and junior Dennis Bates, was elected most improved. OVER-ALL (2-1) (3-6) The Ottumwa Bulldogs finished the season with a 3-6 record, finishing second in the Little Six. Injuries hampered the bulldogs all season, starting with the loss of Blaine Kielkopf in pre-season workouts. The bulldogs were led defensively by Randy Engel, Bill Kramer, Wayne Kielkoph, and Bob Mitchell. Offensively, Ottumwa was led by Denny Riley, and Terry Young. Randy Engel, Denny Riley, Terry Young, and Gene Martinson were named to the honorable mention all-state selections. Although the Bulldogs ended on the short end of victories, there were times when the “Big Red Machine’’ couldn’t be stopped. This year’s sophomore football team extended its winning tra- dition by ending with a 6-2 won-lost record. When asked how he felt after coaching his first season, Coach Lawson commented, “I was happy with the season. Anytime you win 6 games and lose 2 you can’t be disappointed.” The 1971-1972 Bullpups acquired the never give- up attitude. They came from behind to win three of their games this past season. Coach Lawson stated that the entire team was “a good group to coach.” He also said that several key per- formers on the sophomore squad would give the varsity added strength for the coming Bulldog football season. How to handle these problems have created many anxious moments for some of our students locally and throughout the nation. By-in-large most of these are serious and real problems such as school, present and future, war, peer group pressure in regard to the use of drugs and alcohol, etc., have been handled in real soul searching honesty by the majority of our students. With the attitudes that I see today being demon- strated by our students, there is every reason for our Society to expect and receive in the future generation a very humanized, well educated group of American citizens who will be ready to mold an even greater Democracy together with their elders. Ray L. Hammersley Orville Buckingham Frank Fleagle Brony Kastantin Counselors Face the challenge of life and you will find that success is usually a matter of reaching out, a hope, a prayer, an ambition or desire, in this amazing animal we call people. We reach out with empty hands, and good pro- vidence places into them whatever the mind believes the hands are capable of holding. The passing of the years does bring certain physical developments within us, and these may affect our ability to perform and cause us to face new challenges. As the years pass by, remember, it’s not what you were, but what you are today and what you can be tomorrow, that is often the meas- ure of your success in facing the challenge of life. One of the highlights of the season was the opening dual when the Bulldogs rolled to a 30-18 triumph over Iowa City which had previously been undefeated against the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs barely missed the Little-Six Cham- pionship this year when the title was decided in the last match where Burlington held on to edge Ottumwa. The Bulldogs still crowned 5 champions, had 4 seconds, and one third. The Bulldogs had previously defeated Burlington and Keokuk easily in dual competition while Quincy Catholic Boys forfeited. The varsity lettermen this year were: Joe Weir, Pat Weir, Dan Wilkerson, Jerry Close, Dave Buckley, Mark Howard, Larry Handy, Coral John- son, Charles Scott, Greg Martinson, Gene Mar- tinson, Mark Magrane, Tim Fleagle, and Randy Engle. 127 Boys Swimming: Row 1: Jim Wehr, Bob Stangl, Bill Ebinger. Swimmers Have Best Season Ever 129 130 Bulldogs Play Aggressive Basketball 131 Led by Co-captains Tom Johnson, 3rd team all- stater, and Dennis Riley, honorable mention all- stater, the 1971-72 team compiled a 10-9 record. Johnson set a new OHS career assist record of 264, while Riley’s 18.5 scoring average won the third best in OHS history. With only one starter back from the 1971 state runner-up team, it was considered a good season. Seven of the Bulldog losses were to conference champs, while the Bulldogs beat five champs: Catholic Boys, Chariton, Des Moines Roosevelt, Kirksville and Pella. The trademark of this team was good passing and team play. Next year’s team will miss the nifty outside shooting of seniors Dean Sandell and Dennis Riley; and the all round play of one of the greatest competitors in OHS history--Tom Johnson. But with eight lettermen returning: Denny Bates, Rick Brandon, Kirk Engelbart, Bill Kramer, Joe McDonald, Ron Wagner, Mark Wilkinson, and Marty Wilkinson, optimism runs high for a great 1972-73 season. Much thanks should be given the student body and fans whose support helped to make this season a success. There were never fewer than 2,500 fans in attendance at home games and at many away games we seemed to have as many fans as the home team. Left with a height disadvantage, the Bullpups managed but two wins. The Bullpups played a rugged defense. Many players improved as the season progressed. New coach Mike Loeher reported John Helger- son was the most improved player on the squad. Also, the duo of Don Carr and Steve Hutton finished third in the state doubles tournament. Staggs called this season “his best ever at OHS.” The Bulldogs won their own invitational tournament, the district title, and the Little Six for the first time ever. Tom Johnson, Greg Stoessel, Don Carr, and Jim Davis, all top players, will be lost through grad- uation. But with Steve Hutton and underclass- men returning, Staggs predicts future success for the Bulldogs. 176 Coach Staggs discusses strategy with Johnson and Carr. The total season was one of the best in recent years for the team. Overall the team won thirteen while losing only one meet. Also, the team won the Quincy Invitational, Fairfield Invitational, Little Six, sectional and district titles. The Bulldogs finished second in The Ottumwa Invitational Tourney to Quincy High. Leaders for the season were Ross deBuhr with a 74.6 average, Gary Stewart with a 76.6, Craig Pyle with a 77.3, Bob Stangl with a 78.5, Tony Armstrong with a 79.9, and Roger Gran- neman with a 80.9. With Anne Harsch, Marion Mondanaro, Margi Friedl, Mary Ryan, and Terri Zlogar leading the way the girls completed the toughest schedule in the history of OHS. Coach Dan Staggs said, These girls were real fighters. This was obvious as the Lady Bull- dogs rallied after a weak beginning (their only loss to Lincoln) to complete the remainder of the season undefeated. The seniors lost through graduation were Anne Harsch, Marion Mondanaro, Julie Manro, and Terri Francis. Next year’s strong underclass athletes should provide a strong basis for another fine team. 180 Girls Golf Team: Row 1: Sue Ackley, Sue Caves, Jus- Franklin, Paige Peterson, Janet Johnson, Becky Shields, tine Davidson, Barb Graham, Kathy Nydle, Kathy Her- Sue Bastron, Terry Steffen, Barb Gongwer, Mary Herr- rick, Mary Ann Martin, Carla Francis, Coach Corkey iott. This year’s squad ran away with the honors at the Ottumwa Relays, the Oska- loosa and Chariton Relays. The team finished second in the Little Six, third at Fort Madison, and fourth in the District, Newton and Valley. Outstanding performances were recorded by Tod Smith in the high jump, Dean Sandell in 440, Randy Engle in the shot, and the mile relay team of Tim Fitsimones, Jack Courtney, Joe Leach, and Dean Sandell.
