Loerke, Bailey Webber An institution as large and important as our school system must have strong backing. We find this in the Board of Education. The board must make the important decisions that determine the progress of our schools. The school board is to our educational system what the Congress is to the U. S. The Board members are elected by the people. The directors give of their time and re- ceive no salary. These directors control all Jolicies relating to the public schools. The msiness done by the organization amounts to approximately $8(X),(XX) a year. Purchasing supplies, chosing teachers, and arranging for the maintenance of the buildings are just a few of the responsibilities placed on the school board. The decisions of the nine members of the board have a heavy bearing on the future lives of the students now attending Ottumwa’s public schools. ieducation President C. I). Evans Page 11
