OTTAWA UNIVERSITY MARCHES ON Besides being now in its second century this college is approaching a new era. The gains of the years immediately past are to be consolidated so that they may become at once the foundation of and the stepping stones to a new order and a higher level of achievement. This is not simply a matter of growing facilities, new buildings, new equipment, nor even of enroll- ment size. It is rather in the concept that we can and must become an even better college in the quality of our work. The quest for quality is never suspended when the academic community is true to itself. It is really part and parcel of academic success itself. For in matters academic there is no room for self-satisfaction or for settling for the second best. It is, of course, very tempting to look back and dream of the years gone by and to think of what has been accomplished, at times with extraordinary difficulty and in much uncertainty. Loyal, capable faculty and administration associates loom large in the picture as well as student leaders. It has been uphill almost all of the way and now we have seen the solid achievements which have come about because all of us, administration, faculty and students have given something of our best. It would be easy to think that now we have arrived and the future is assured. But life is not like that, neither is an institution of learning it it is alert and eager for service. A new day is dawning in the world and in our world on the campus. The challenge is not so much for more of everything in the material sense as it is for renewal and for new inner resources for such a time as this. For one thing, we need to ask ourselves again and again who we are as a college and what our serious mission in education really is in these coming years. Without vision the people perish , but also without a strong sense of direction any cause will stagnate and die. There must be a core of meaning and shared purpose which makes us distinctive and which will constantly challenge us to give of our best. We belong with other liberal arts colleges to an imperishable tradition in education. Education of this sort cannot be outdated because it is concerned with man himself, with his mind and his spirit. lt reaches life at its depth and at its best. It prepares students to live in fullness of life and in involved leader- ship in the world. But within this great tradition we have a distinctive part to play in our special approach to educa- tion, in our deep devotion to faith as well as learning, in the Ottawa Spirit and in the call to service which so many of our graduates have answered. It is in and through these characteristics that the Ottawa of the future will achieve greatness in its time. It is to these that we must renew our dedication. Dr. Andrew B. Martin President
