mvn .nn :1 1966 OTTAWAN OTTAWA UNIVERSITY OTTAWA, KANSAS 0N MOVING INTO A NEW CENTURY Ottawa University has entered upon its Second Century of service in Higher Education. This new era is a very special one because of the unprecedented and, indeed, revolutionary change it will bring about in American life. This includes radical revision of education at all levels. In College and University, we must be prepared to accept change however far- reaching and to be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things; The important point is that the values and goals which seem to us fundamental must bepreE-erved t within the new forms, whatever they may be. i' We must, for example, maintain freedom of thought and discussion, for this is the essential climate of the true University. The intellectual life would otherwise become grossly distorted or, indeed, actually rendered impossible. Also, Education must concern itself more, not less, with the needs of man as. man. The great objective, next to rigorous intellectual discipline, is that of helping the student to becomea well- developed person. e , 5. 3w Again, there must continue to be emphasis upon the individual and his special abilities. Individuality is too important to be ignored or discouraged. Each person should have the opportunity to advance educationally to the extent of hiswnterest and his capacity. H a m connection between faith and learning has great historical significance. This is religion goes deep into the very nature of life itself as doe? education. Man ,1 ultimate need not only for knowledge but for faith in 39 orderly and valueh universe. g , .I On these great prInCIples we stand as we face thegyears ahead? l: . rs . Andrew B. But Homecoming is more than outward, visable things. Homecoming is the planning of club floats, the fun of watch- ing them take shape and the pressure of getting them finished before the deadline. Homecoming is getting people to sell mums and work in the information booth. Homecoming '65 is boosting the sale of Odetta tickets. Homecoming is the eager anticipation of which candidates have been chosen as royalty and their court. It is the Homecoming Ball and the excitement of the game. It is having parents and friends on campus. But, foremost, Homecoming is a coming home of alumni, graduates, and former students who feel that Ottawa University really IS their home. It's an opportunity for them to visit with their friends and to relive their memories. Its a chance to catch up on what's happening to whom and to see the progress being made at Ottawa. Homecoming is an answer to the memories that call every Ottawa student. 5 UMMER w:?w HUMEBUMING llUEEN GEORGANN LASHMETT ZETA PI OMEGA HOMEO0MING KING JERRY FREEMAN SIGMA IAII DELTA 57 58 JESSE RANDALL ALPHA PHI BETA JEANNE BOWMAN SIGMA mm PSI ATTENDANTS T0 MARTHA ATKINSON PHI KAPPA cHI THE ROYALTY RICHARD BANNON ALPHA Pm BETA E F l l WATER DAMPENS FIRE BUT NOT PLAYER? The Braves began the 1965 season with high hopes of retaining their championship crown, but the outcome of their spectacular season proved to be more than even the most optimistic spectators could have ever anticipated. The Braves seemed to have both of the needed ingredients, a high scoring offense and a tough defense for the favored KCAC team. The Braves took little time to prove their excellence as they won the opener 57-2 against a much improved Friends University team. The squad didn't let up as they outmanned the Bethel Shockers 47-7 a week later. As the excitement began to mount, people began to wonder just how good the Ottawa team was. Baker and C of E were beaten, so the stage was set for an interesting season. Sterling found out the hard way the kind of game Ottawa played. The Braves completely demolished the Warriors as Ed Buzzel broke a national record and led the Braves to an 82-0 victory. With the Braves ranked fifteenth nationally and excitement continuing to mount, Ottawa traveled to Emporia to seek a victory from C of E for the first time in four years. Defense reinforced 0.U.'s spiriting offense and the Braves chalked up their fourth victory 36-6. The next week Kansas Wesleyan caught the Braves licking their chops. After a first half score, the fifth victory was 27-6. At this point, Bethany College and Ottawa were the only undefeated teams in the conference. On a sunny, but chilly, Homecoming the Braves again found it hard to win, but they rose to the occasion and beat South- western 27-7. This gained for Ottawa a rank of sixth in the nation. Some of the early characteristics of the 1965 team began to reappear as the Braves took McPherson apart with a score of of 41-15. This prepared Ottawa to meet Bethany for the showdown 0f the season, a game between the two undefeated teams, but this never happened because Baker downed Bethany. Since the Braves were already prepared, Bethany caught the short end of a 44-7 victory. After their best ballgame of the season against Sterling, with Baker's upset giving Ottawa a clear KCAC title and bowl talk in the air, the Braves found it hard to climb back to play Baker. Ottawats arch rivals were out for blood as the Braves came to town, but, with no help from Baker, Ottawa won the annual battle 28-20. The season ended with the undefeated Braves ranked fifth in the nation and a bowl bid which was declined by the team. Ed Buzzell, who holds three national records, was selected for the NAIA AlI-American team. Leonard Scheufler was chosen for the second All-American team. The Braves placed five on the alI-conference team: Ed Buzzell, quarterback; Leonard Scheufler, end; John Salavantis, tackle; George Funk, guard; and Richard Bannon, defensive halfback. At the season's close George Funk and John Salavantis were chosen co-captains of probably the greatest football team ever to play at Ottawa University. N A m R rr- M . l. l. A Leonard Schenfler, Second team All American George Funk, All Conference Guard and Co-captain John Salivantis, All Conference tackle and c0- captain Richard Bannun, All Conference defensive halfback HPETE RUNNER-UP COACH OF THE YEAR Richard Peters Braves finished the season ranked fifth in the NAIA. HARRIERS Darrell Randall, KCAC IndividuaI Champion, and Coach Bnucek SOCCER GAINS POPULARITY Coach Schoonover, Captain Ray Holmstmm, and Dr. Martin BRAVES FINISH FIFTH This year's basketball team despite its lack of height played with youthful enthusiasm and t0 the end of the season remained a threat in the conference. The team opened the season against Pittsburg, a non-conference foe, with a welI-played loss of 81-68. The next three games made the schoot buzz as Ottawa knocked off Bethany 95-55, Friends 77-65, and then Baker 78-57. At this point, expectations were high that, perhaps this year, Ottawa would go places in basketball. The next four games played began to show uncertainty in the Ottawan defense, as we dropped a game to Kansas Wesleyan 96-84, then beat Bethel 99-80, then dropped to McPherson 80-76, and then whipped Sterling 82-59. Our record stood at 5-2 in the conference at this date, and then, with a sudden flourishing downfall, our record stood at 5-6 in the conference, as we lost the next five games, four in the KCAC and one non-conference. These losses were to Southwestern, 86-63; Warrensburg tnon-conferencei, 99-70; College of Emporia, 89-73; Bethany, 69-55; and to Friends in a squeaker, 85-83. Then, as if these five games had been a big mistake, Ottawa quickly defeated her next three foes. She bounced Baker 77-64, defeated Wesleyan 98-85, and downed Bethel 67-55. The last four games of the season saw our team lose two games by close margins, losing to McPherson 74-73 and to Southwestern 71-69. We then dealt Sterling a loss 71-58, and were defeated by College of Emporia 93-79 to end the season. Ottawa finished fifth in the conference with a 9-9 record, and in overall games we stood 9-11. We played sporadically, and if we had maintained the balance of attack with which we played the first four games of the season the story of this year's record might have been different. The team was led by Coach Bill Frear, and the starting five generally were Toni Verdi, Chuck Mercer, Greg VanErt, Gary Harrison, and Wayne Sutter. They were backed by a strong bench led by Tony Judenis, Ron Dunham, Dick Booth, Jim Carter, Lenny Scheufler, and others. The youth of the team this year leads everyone to look forward to next year. All but four of our players return and with a strong nucleus left behind, Ottawans can look to a rich and rewarding season in 1967. Our thanks to the basketball squad for a good 1966 season, and the boys deserve our apprecia- tion. 103 Senior, Chuck MercehCaptain Senior, Wayne Sutter Senior, Jim Carter .0 t 0 0 B d f a .n m R .H 0 n e S $3 $56? - ax, w Amm $3 wad TRACK lETTERMEN Wendy Carpender Conference Reusch throwing the javelin. DEBATE This years debate team did an exceptionally fine job of representing Ottawa Univer- sity, being among one of the finest in the nation. KTJO The campus radio voice, KTJO-AM-FM, offers a varied program to suit the tastes of its listeners, Classical music, dinner music, and current top tunes were beamed over the campus by the Uni- versity station. An outstanding feature was the broadcasting of particular class lectures. News- casts kept students wetl informed of world and national news as well as campus life. Radio staff members also assisted the University station with the coverage of athletic events. CAMPUS The Ottawa Campus has again sought to serve the University community through its reflective and creative endeavors, seeking to help to define and bridge the gaps that occur perennially. Functioning weekly, staff members have -given freely of their time and ability to announce, reflect and create the Campus, granting a commitment to the ideals of the entire University and a sense of involvement with the larger student community. 1965-1966 EDITORIAL STAFF Editor ..................................
