Jewell H. Berrier English: Key to Understanding The aim ofthe English program is to achieve the maximum development in organization, expression, evaluation, and critical thinking. To achieve these aims, a semester of speech was instituted at the sophomore level. B.S. in Ed., M.Ed., McPherson College, Central Missouri State College, University of Missouri, Northern Illinois University Harry F. Adrian B.A., M.Ed., Lincoln University, St. Mary's College, Winona, Minn., Missouri University, Northern Illinois University, Missouri State College, University of Illi- nois Although' a semester of English had to be omitted to make room for speech, students gain more benefits in the long run. Early training by qualified speech teachers can help students achieve ease in appearing before an audience. Besides building self-confidence, the student learns the importance of effective listening and how to present his ideas effectively. Speech helps the student develop the ability to hold discusssions and debates which can be useful in other classes. It is hoped that this early training will lead some students to the related areas of dramatics, debate, and interpretive reading. Speech can strengthen the student's ability to evaluate and to discuss, while giving him better preparations for college. Each English student is placed in a section where he can succeed and still be challenged. Maximum development in the areas of organization of thought, paragraph structure, efficient library use, and literary appreciation are strived for. Develop- ment of reading and writing skills and correct English usage is important for success in school. Nancy J. Clark B.S.
