The lndian culture is as varied, rich, and colorful as any known to man. Its history is rooted deep into America's past, and al- though today this culture has been diluted in a melting pot of many other races, creeds and nationalities, its uniqueness and individuality stand out against the multi- tude. The lndian brave of the American plains has become a legend in our minds. He possessed both physical and mental strength, was straight and sturdy, skillful and proud. His principles were his guides, and the times were seldom that he strayed beyond their boundaries. Furthermore, he worked hard to attain the rewards which his society afforded. He lived and worked with his tribe, and although much was shared in common, he retained his indi- vidualism. Thus, he was complete and in- dependent in himself, but was able to be- come part of a larger structure, which, by his participation, was aided in working more effectively. Together, they were one. And so, are we of Ottawa Hills also one, together . . . each of us an individual, yet, an essential part of larger structures . . . our school, our state, our country, and the American society. Thus, our theme, the American Indian, lies before us as a guide throughout this book . . . symbol of a wonderful people, wonderful values and ideals, and a wonderful culture.
