HERE THERE'S MUSIC . .. BUSINESS SENS Music hath charm to soothe the savage beast. True, the music department may not have tamed beasts, but its many varied programs and activi- ties have given the students much pleasure and enjoyment throughout the year. Band, orchestra, and chorus, are fields offered to both senior and junior high. This year, the sen- ior high band put in a snappy appearance in new uniforms well deserved by the entire group Working as a strong unit the music department reaches out to many Ottawa students thus culti vating talent and appreciation in a wonderful field I BUSINESS CENTS I'll just never learn to keep my eyes off those keys and type faster, exclaims a discouraged stu- dent as he leaves his typing class. However, he usually finds that he does succeed, as here, and in other commercial classes, students are found ac- quiring commercial abilities of all types. Business math, office practice, commercial law, retail sell- ing, bookkeeping, stenography, shorthand, and typing comprise the subjects taught This year many of the classes assisted the faculty with things such as typing and dittoing DO OTHY HILL BS MA Ferris U of M office practice stenogra phy typing TED PASMA BM Western Mich vocal music ROLAND VASHAW ALMA STACE B 5 MA Bob Jones Univergity U of M typing MA Western Michigan vocal instrumental music MER shorthand CHARLES F CHANTER B S MA Wayne State WYN NITCHELL A B M M Simpson College and Michigan Western Michigan commercial State instrumental mus c 1 ' - ' 1 r 1 ' ' R , .., . ., , I I I , . NATIVE LEARN NATIVE LA GUAGE Proper development of one's own lan- guage is truly a necessity in this world of communication. Thus, the study of English is stressed throughout school, giving us basic rules and ideas with which to speak and write more efficiently. ln the seventh and eighth grades, fund- amentals of English are implanted as a basis for future study. Along with a review of English grammar, which is stressed in all higher grades, introductory works of literature are studied in the ninth grade. Throughout senior high, English and Ameri- can literature are studied respectively. Stu- dents also tackle vocational themes, auto- biographies and term reports as annual ac- tivities for specific grades. In these various ways the English Department strives to at- tain a thorough knowledge of our native language for every student LE CURRY B.A. M.A. . o . . of Iowa- English.
