Its history is rooted deep into America's past, and al- though today this culture has been diluted in a melting pot of many other races, creeds and nationalities, its uniqueness and individuality stand out against the multi- tude. The lndian brave of the American plains has become a legend in our minds. He possessed both physical and mental strength, was straight and sturdy, skillful and proud. His principles were his guides, and the times were seldom that he strayed beyond their boundaries. Furthermore, he worked hard to attain the rewards which his society afforded. He lived and worked with his tribe, and although much was shared in common, he retained his indi- vidualism. Thus, he was complete and in- dependent in himself, but was able to be- come part of a larger structure, which, by his participation, was aided in working more effectively. Together, they were one. And so, are we of Ottawa Hills also one, together . . . each of us an individual, yet, an essential part of larger structures . . . our school, our state, our country, and the American society. Thus, our theme, the American Indian, lies before us as a guide throughout this book . . . symbol of a wonderful people, wonderful values and ideals, and a wonderful culture. Thus, the study of English is stressed throughout school, giving us basic rules and ideas with which to speak and write more efficiently. ln the seventh and eighth grades, fund- amentals of English are implanted as a basis for future study. Along with a review of English grammar, which is stressed in all higher grades, introductory works of literature are studied in the ninth grade. Throughout senior high, English and Ameri- can literature are studied respectively. Stu- dents also tackle vocational themes, auto- biographies and term reports as annual ac- tivities for specific grades. In these various ways the English Department strives to at- tain a thorough knowledge of our native language for every student LE CURRY B.A. M.A. . o . . of Iowa- English. It sounds like magic, but then, perhaps a little sorcery is employed each day at Ottawa by our efficient custodians who have mastered the art. Their duties consist of endless jobs around school which they continually handle swiftly and dependably. Appetizing lunches prepared by our cooks cause many a student to hurry from third hour classes to the cafeteria. Each day, hot lunches ment in our modern kitchen. September. Present Place: The living room of the old Brewster home in Brooklyn, N. Y. lt is just as Victorian as the two sisters, Abby and Martha Brewster, who occupy the house. Despite sickness, homework, and tests, every member of the cast showed up for each rehearsal. Working hard with hammer, paintbrush, and stencil, the stage crew transformed the stage to the living-room of a Victorian style home, the setting for the l959 Senior Play, Arsenic and Old Lace. When the final curtain swept across the stage both cast and crew felt that the work and preparation had been worthwhile and an unforgettable experience Progressing line by line the play flowered into a blooming success Rummage Sale is another traditional event of senior year which takes place when fall winds begin to blow This year Halloween nights brought the highlights of the sale as musty dusty yet industrious seniors traveled from home to home trickertreating for any and all usable remnants After making the rounds a dance was held in the gym with five lbs of rummage required as admission price ,,.. 11' Yes this hat will do nicely exclaims one of the Brewster Rummage Sale booms as the Seniors cry is stack it HlGHER' sisters while selecting her attire 29 , V , , - , . The words senior year carry with them many anticipations and expectations to each specific person about to embark on that final high school journey. ln rapid succes- sion, these hopes, plans and ideals materi- alize until the legendary year is clirnaxed by graduation. Many plans and associations may extend into future years, yet the maiority of the things which characterize senior year become a part of the past . . . and simply a fond memory. Each graduating class passes through this cycle, yet memories are the same, for every class is unique in its own specific personality . . . in its proiects and its undertakings . . . This too, is the Class of '60, The class traditionally instigated the year's activities by sponsoring the dance after our victorious game against East. High spirits were preserved in the crisp fall air, and ex- tended into homecoming night. Here, the evening ended in a magical Mood Indigo where many enchanted couples swayed to sweet strains. Then came the rummage sale , . . and senior play following close on its heels. In the play, two hilarious nights were brewed by the cast as they mixed Arsenic and Old Lace on the school stage. With the completion of these activities, the class took time to look around, gain their bearings, take stock of the situation, and perhaps awaken to the realization that here they were . . . seniors at last. As spring fever began to break out in epidemic proportions, activities once again began to pop. Smorgasbord with a thousand tantalizing tastes and smells, Junior-Senior Prom, senior class banquet, baccalaureate . . . Each, in turn drew commencement closer until it loomed up ahead, was there, . . . and iust as quickly, gone again. So now, each senior steps into the life which lies before him . . . one that is rich, full, and limitless to do with as he pleases . . . and senior year became a guide to days ahead, and a memory of days past . . . never to be forgotten. Engaged in an earnest discussion are senior advisors, Mr. Love and Mr. Newton. JU IDR BR VES BLAZE EW TRAILS Promotion of manners and conduct throughout school was the main aim of the Junior High Student Council this past year. Showing points of good conduct, a iunior high code was adopted and issued to each member ot the iunior high. The Council divided into various committees in the fall each having certain aims and pur- poses to be fulfilled. The social and publicity committees worked together to present several dances and a mixer for the seventh graders, pro- viding fun and merriment 'For all. Developing club membership, thus enabling as many students as possible to belong to a club, was the main goal of the service commit- tee. A survey ot all students' interests and ac- tivity participation was made and tabulated re- sults were sent to all club presidents for the purpose of developing club membership. Among other assemblies, the assembly com- mittee presented a program on club member- if ship. '1 SOCKS Banding together for the first time as an organized club, the iunior girls began work- ing on the annual proiect of the Junior Girls' League, the Sox Trot. The effectiveness of the girls' efforts and their co-operation with one another was fully proven by the success of the Sox Trot, held on December 6. Besides this big proiect, the girls also par- ticipated in many other activities. They sold class pins to the entire high school. At the end of the year, they had a tea for their mothers and a style show with the girls themselves modeling clothes from local stores. However, in spite of their many proiects, the girls still felt that their main purpose was to back their class and all its functions. With three returning veterans, coach Rip Col- lins' Ottawa turfmen finished the season tied for second place in city competition. The teams over- all record registered four victories and the same number of defeats. A season which was marred by bad weather included victories over East, Cres- ton, South, and Central. The defeats came at the hands of Muskegon Catholic Central, Union, Catholic Central, and Grand Haven. The most priminent feature in the Indians' attack this year was their never give up spirit. This year's spirit and desire was best illustrated in the Creston game when the team was on the short end of a T4-7 score at the beginning of the final period. They came on to win the game rolling up T20 yards in that final period despite a number of penalties. Four Ottawa gridders received honors on the Press all-city team. Making the first team was triple-threat halfback Ral Smith. Two Indian line- men and one back were cited on the honorable mention team. These were Orville Schnieder, center, Bob Lurtsma, tackle, and Ted Texer, quar- terback. Ral Smith proves that extra effort pays off as he lurches for six points. 4 ll 'iii 1 1 , t l , I T lan: nn. .- lu Ji, '53 an Ottawa plunges up the rmddle as Lurtsema In far left plays patty cake Srmth gaming momentum circles left end for a sizeable gain In the mud and snow Ottawa stops Grand Haven ball carrter ii' 321:-w 'V-x qv A?-.5 ,Q- HI' -tn' ,, ,QQ- ,..
