H. M. S. PilZ6lfb1'6 In accordance with a tradition revived last year. the Music Department with the support of the Dra- matics Dcpartment and Art Department undertook an operetta, I-l.M,S, Pinaforen by Gilbert and Sul- livan. presented January 10 and ll. with a matinee on Thursday afternoon. The set, which turned the stage into a lavish ship. was composed of a series of curtains and backdrops. which were ordered from Tracy Music Library in Boston. who are authentic representatives of the D'Oyle Carte Opera Company. The cast rehearsed for twelve weeks in an en- deavor to give a polished performance, In addition to the cast, the orchestra spent eight weeks learning and practicing the music in an attempt to play it in true Gilbert and Sullivan fashion. The story goes that Ralph Rackshaw, a sailor on the good ship H.M.S. Pinafore, finds himself hope- lessly in love with the captain's daughter, Josephine. But the lovely Josephine is already promised to the Monarch of the Seas, Sir Joseph Porter, K,B.C. The complications which follow, not only for Ralph and Josephine, but also for Sir Joseph and the captain, go to make a good story. ,,.,,'-:a,m- gf, k ugh., . -. f, 1 f- f..-Q. .gm-in .. -.- - c. adzfw... y . -.uma .vr-wan.-4.-in N ar., ,. . ua, - a .ff U-Ly XVhen Ralph tinds himself the rightful captain of the ship, he changes places with Captain Corcoran and claims Josephine as his bride.
