OTEGO CENTRAL SCHOOL By the maple trees surrounded And a lawn that's always green Stands our dear Otego High School Place of many a pleasant scene. With the hills and trees behind it 'Mong the buildings of the town ls it not a pretty picture of the Orange and the Brown When at first we entered high school We felt so strange and shy And many a problem vexed us, Causing oft a long drawn sigh But as the days rolled by us And the regents came around We were well prepared to answer for the Orange and the Brown Through the next three years of high school In the rooms we love so well, We gain a broader knowledge Of the things that life will tell: And we win athletic victories O'er the teams of nearby towns Still we work for dear Otego and the Crange and the Brown CLASS OF 1952 MR. Mrs.Hamiltonwas our firstyear teacher.Adarlingplayhouse and g cubby hole of shelves called a post office completely won over our enthusiasm for this new thing called school. Our second year with Mrs. Haynes was equally as interesting. Under the guidance of our Art teacher, Miss Heger, we constructed a Circus Parade and Peter Rabbits Garden . As a climax of this year we took part in the annual grade operetta and recited Mother Goose poems. Maurice Stranagan came in our third year. Miss Jester introduced us to the Billy Whiskers books. Two plays presented by us this year were: Why the Chimes Rang and Hansel and Gretel. Our talents were put to use making a large murel of which we were very proud. It pictured the song, God Bless America. Helen Foote, Rose Allen, and Carmilla Jones joined us in the fourth grade. Mrs. Hodges was our teacher. Humorous incidents occurred- for instance, the time Gordy spilled a pail of water on the floor. In the fifth grade we performed scientific experiments under the watchful eye of Mrs. Tuttle. It isn't our fault that the school is still standing. Donald Lent and Malcom Ross joined our ranks this year. In our sixth year with Mrs. Bennett as our teacher we held a notebook making contest on the subject of the United States. The winning group, the state of Texas was duly treated to a party by the others. Dorothy Sheldon, Joyce Utter, Lyle Norton and Lillian Fisk were added to our number now. We tried to postpone our quaking fears about seventh grade initiation we had flutterbys in our stomachs. It resulted in fun for everyone and almost as much for us as for the seniors who initiated us. Money matters confronted us now but we started toward financial success when our duck pond at the school fair, awarded us with 510. 00 Joan Haney, joined us here. Mr. Beemer and Mrs. Donald Allen were our advisors. At the end of our eighth year we went on a trip to Albany, Schenectady and Howe Caverns. Most interesting were the W.G. Y. Studios at Schenectady and the Winding Way at Howe Caverns. We sponsored a movie, Bar 20 Rides Again. Paul Hilfiger came this year and Mrs. Donald Allen remained our advisor. Max Stevens joined us in the ninth grade. We had a movie, Sinbad the Sailor. At our first dance, on May 13th. , we crowned our Queen, Joan Robinson, with her attendants, Audrey and Shirley Burnside. The crown bearer was Billy Groves and flowergirl was Sharon Crawford. Gay decorations of colored streamers were set off by a net filled with ballons, that later floated through the air mixed with the music of Linus Houcke. Several class dinners added to our round of activities. Mrs. Allen and Mr. Mclntyre were our Advisors. By now we were the largest class in school with a total of 51. Mr. Guy Mitchell and Mrs. Scannell advised us. Our Sophmore dance was held on April 28. Our Rose Garden decoration theme was admired by orchestra leader, Ernie Russ. He photographed our decorations and used them on his posters. Here Mary Lou Clark joined us. Our Junior year brought Mrs. Davidson and Mr. Bensink to be our advisors. Bob Wyckoff was our only addition. In September we sold magazine subscriptions in a contest with the Seniors. Our first class JV-party was October 28th. at the school. Can we ever forget the Danish Mix, Mr. Bensink made for it? In November we selected for our class ring the Golden Knight design from the Bastian Company. The theme, Winter Wonderland was chosen for our first dance of the year held on December 8 with music by the Woodhull Boys. For decorations a revolving chandelier made of broken mirrors gave the effect of dancing snowflakes and brought many favorable comments. December 16 was the date o'f our hayride followed by a Christmas party at Marie Sheldons. Gift exchange and mistle-toe added to the fun. When the Seniors returned from their trip, the remaining banquets and the ice cream concession were granted us. April 26 and 27 we presented our Junior Play Everything Happens to U5, Many happy memories remain from this great success which was enjoyed by a large number of people. Members of the cast included: Mary Lou Clark, Robert Bump, Gordon Hyatt, Shirley Burnside Joyce Nichols, Robert Wyckoff , Mary Shultis, Lyle Norton, Clark Andrews, Joan Hoyt, and Dorothy Sheldon. After the first performance of the play , members of the cast went to Treadwell to a dance at the school and later to a party at Mrs. Davidson's home. May 18 was our second dance when the Woodhull Boys again provided the music. To climax this busy year we had a class picnic on June 21 at Fairy Springs on Otsego Lake. Swimming was enjoy- ed, as was the feast that followed. Later in the evening through the influence of Clark Andrews, we went for anine mile boat ride on the largest cruiser on the lake, owned and operated by Clark's uncle. We had a wonderful time and such harmony you never heard. Our most-looked for year began on September 5, 1951 with Mrs. Davidson and Mr. Eletto our advisors. Our first project was the annual magazine contest sale. In contesting with the Juniors, we won with Bob Wyckoff as our H high salesman. October 19 was our first dance with music by the Woodhull Bays. Decorations were of the Autumn theme. Stationery sales began soon after the dance. The Senior play, Just Ducky a three act comedy was present- ed December ll. Our second dance on March 7 with music by Ernie Russ, followed the theme of St. Patricks Day. On April 11th. we are planning to start on that long-waited-for trip to Washington D. C. , Philadelphia, and New York City. After we return our next main event will be that solemn, but happy occasion--graduation.
