.....,. -my . 'ir 'L - firm. J.. wford Walters makes the high hurdles. ggi. R-iii By Pete Mizelle There were three school records set by the Smith High track team this year. Perhaps the most improved member of the team, Punky Richards, set two ot the records. The records he set were in the shot put and in the discus. Coach Smith says that he is expecting Punky to place in State competition mext year. The team this year has won only two meets, but by beating Suffdk, it set the third record. This was the lirst Group l team to be beaten by a high school in South Nortolk. The team might have won more meets it Bill Story had not been injured early in the season. Another boy who has shown great improvement is Billy jones. jones was elected captain ot the team. He has worked hard in the dashes. Aubrey Parkington has worked hard in the 440 and broad jump. Tommy Batten has been consistent in the pole vault. He also set a school record of nine feet nine inches. Crawtord Walters is the best hurdler on the team. QQ-.Q Up and over! Billy. And away it goes. Billy looks determined. Looks like Billy made a good effort, but he just couldn't to come in first. Real good try though!

A stream at Natural Bridge. 0 0 l 0 ' By Betty Hassell Could this be heaven? Well, -not quite. It's S. l. P. A. in Lexington, Virginia. What causes anyone to ask this question? The tact that the convention is held at Washington and Lee University La boys school? with the help of the Virginia Military Institute LV. M. l. J which interests the girls. Highlights of the convention are dances at each of these colleges. There are approximately l,bUU girl delegates to occupy the boys. Who has been to this wonderful place? Well, -eleven of Smith High's own students, seven representing the annual start and four from the radio station. The expression S. l. P. A. stands tor Southern interscholastic Press Association. lt sounds as though the convention is just one big party, but there are classes, clinics, and panel discussions on radio and yearbook work to attend. Special assemblies are held with famous people as speakers. This year Rube Goldberg, a cartoonist with the King Syndicate and Pauline Fredriek, a woman news correspondent were the outstanding guests. This was the tirst year that the radio had enter- ed the S. 1. P. A. competition and they were pleased to receive an achievement award. 'l'he Tiger for 1955 was given the trophy award the highest in the Group 2 Yearbook Division. ln superstition, the delegates went to Natural Bridge on the Saturday before the Awards Banquet. lThe lasttime the trophy was won, -they went there and it was considered good luck.J Also they were careful to sit at the sametable as the one at which they had won before. Although there were thirteen people at the table, the annual did win. On the last day, a tired but happy group left Lexington tor home. Ready to leave but hoping to return another year. '- we
