Ron lepowsky DoU Tornhom Pete Raff«ty Roger Deison 'Jedball ummarif Orono started out its football season with excellent spirit but lacking in size. The season started off with a bang with Orono trouncing Howard Lake 20 to 0 in a non-conference game. Then we went on to our first conference game and beat Norwood 17 to 13. Offensively we dominated the game but we missed many chances to score. Orono's first big win of the season was the victory over Waconia 20 to 0. The team as a whole worked well together on both offense and defense. Coach Pesonen commented that it was the best game ever played by an Orono team since football started here. After this victory, Orono continued on its winning streak by edging out Watertown 12 to 6. This game was played in 85° weather and both teams wilted after the first half. This four-game winning streak was snapped off abruptly when the Spartans ran up against a stone wall, namely, Shakopee. This game was by far the poorest played game of the season with the Shakopee line out-charging us all through the battle. Orono's homecoming game was played with Chaska. The Spartans came out on top very decisively with a 39 to 0 score. After homecoming, the Sparton eleven was upset when Bloomington jumped to an 18 point lead and went on to win 18 to 6. In the last game of the season, the Orono team put on an offensive fireworks that caught the Valley Conference Champions, University High, completely off guard. Wide holes were opened up in the U-High line by Turnham, Dieson, and Kirsch. Leonard Larson intercepted two passes that clinched the victory for Orono. All during the season the seniors came through very well. The graduating players are Garland Albers, Leonard Larson, Gary White, Dale Turnham, George Myers, Peter Raffety, Roger Dieson, and Ron Lepowsky. The reserves also came through in grand style. Three Spartans were chosen all-conference. These were Garland Albers, R. H. Peterson, and Dale Turnham. S Team Back Row: K. loney, J. Rockvam, B. Willis. D. McDonald. G. Hopf, R. Not . I. Siverson.
