We have known Mr. Ashley for three short years. In this time we have realized his true interest in our class. When we first entered his classroom or when we encountered him in the halls we were ever aware of his sincerity, warmth, and friendliness. Our class will always hold in high esteem his practical, beyond the text book, styled of teaching. We also realize the present and the future value of his counselling. We thank you, Mr. Ashley, for all these qualities that helped to lead our faltering efforts. MR. CARLTON W. We, the senior class, will the front door to the future students hoping it will always be as open to them as it was to us. We, the senior class, name as sole executor of our last will and testimony, Mr. Lytle, our superintendent. Sealed and witnessed on this day, February tenth, nineteen hundred and fifty-four, in the school of Orono High, in the city of Long Lake, and in the state of Minnesota. 18 PrcpkeM) We see that Garland Albers finally made the grade — he owns his own airlines. While on the subject of airplanes, Bev Bergman is a stewardess for Northwest Airlines. The famous Anderson Turkey Farms has a stenographer that we know — Marlene Anderson. Office work claims another graduate, Harriet Peterson. She runs a comptometer machine for Prudential. As we sit and look into the future, we see several girls that went into nursing: Pat Cofield in India; Arlyce Furst, head nurse at Northwestern Hospital; Marion Merz at Orono; and Jo Ann Rieser in Greenland. The teaching bug caught several grads: Beth Hehl is teaching 4th grade at the Stubbs Bay School; Kenny Hohenstein is teaching art; and Pat Maski fulfilled her life-long ambition of teaching kindergarten. Deeper and deeper into the future. Events become clearer and we recognize more classmates. Grady Bryant has just finished his hitch in the Navy and is now driving trucks for his dad. Dennis Lytle has finally gotten through R.O.T.C. and is holding down the honors of seaman 2nd class. Jean Courtney has finally worked her way up to first position in the Buckhorn. Janis Nelson works with Jean and raises a family as a side-line. The night wears on — hour after hour . . . we must hurry or it will be daylight . . . Carol Nelson covers the Long Lake news for the Minnetonka Herald while Lanny Parke writes the gossip column for the Minneapolis Star. Roger Dieson is building a swimming pool and theater in Orono High School. Peter Raffety has Gary White bidding against him for rebuilding the Brooklyn Bridge. We have to look farther into the stars . . . a few grads are far away . . . Ann Ferrin is quietly married to a minister and lives in South Africa. Bev Danielson (Daniel Yorgesson?) is practicing physical therapy in Sweden. Dale Turnham is a successful salesman selling teakwood from Central America. We flash back home and take a peek . . . Esther Gabriel is still washing dishes at Johnson's Cafe and working for Walter. Mary Gerber now is the full owner of the Gerber Baby Food Company. Merlin Glampe works in U. S. O. camps entertaining soldiers. Marilyn Johnson runs a nursery school for her own kids. Crystal Bay's Leonard Larson finally hit six-six and is exempt from the draft. Tom Ovshak is a successful veterinarian in Maple Plain. The stars flash us to the West Coast where we get a glimpse of Tom Hopf racing hot-rods. Dick Sonderup is his side-kick and partner. Ronald Lepowsky took over his dad's job — driving for Greyhound. Every once in a while, he gets to the West Coast to see Dick and Tom. The stars flash us back and forth into the futures . . . Joyce Klatte is modeling French clothes in Minneapolis and Sally Swenson is modeling for Dayton's. Larry Myers plays nightly at the Marigold and Donn Stinson is working for Mather's in Florida. Roy Swanson and Carl Thomas are working on their fathers' farms. Carl wrestles every Saturday night besides. Yvonne Olander fulfilled her ambition — she married Paul. Darlene Peterson worked her way into the star performance of the circus — the laughing woman of the world. George MacDonald purposely became President so he could put his feet on the desk. Cecil (B. De) Taylor is a T-man for Treasury Department. The last prophesy was told in time ... it is morning . . . another day begins for the '54 graduates of Orono High School. 19 Hall ctf 'Jam Mott l.kety lo Succeed toimy Pork lam Ov.KoV Clou Clown ftt DonWHoo D nnn lylle Bell All Around Solly Swenton Corlond Albert Moil Siud.Out Pol Cofield tom Ovthok Biggest Apple Po-'llior Bev Bcrgmon leonord lotion Beil Athlete Jonli Nelio Gotland Alben Ben Oreiied Beth Wehl George Myert Bett Figure ood Physique Arly(« Fwr l Garland Albert ftowdretl J oo Covrtftty Dennit lylle Betr Spoil Ann F rln Remold lepowtky Blggeii flirl Yvonne Olonder Gorlond Albeit Ben Dancer Joyce Xlotle George Myen Mai' Populor Solly Swenson Oorlond Albert Moil Tolenied Arlyce Fsrrll George Myert 8eii looking Po Motki Gory Wbrie Motl Oepeodoble lonny Porfce Do In Turnhom Moil lolkoilve Oo'lene Pelerton C«U Taylor Bet? Turnham, With the help of their picturesque homecoming display, the juniors started out the year with a bang last fall by being the first class to win the newly created trophy contest. Marilynne Johnson was chosen as their attendant to the Homecoming Queen. The juniors undertook the annual money raising project (magazine sale) with great enthusiasm, thus winning a plaque for their sales ability. On November twentieth they presented their junior class play, Junior Miss. They raised money for the Junior-Senior Prom by sponsoring several Flash dances after basketball games, and the Fall Frolic and Heart Hop. All-in-all this year's juniors, led by their capable officers and advisers, will deserve the honors to be bestowed on them when thev become the leaders in the school next year. Ron lepowsky DoU Tornhom Pete Raff«ty Roger Deison 'Jedball ummarif Orono started out its football season with excellent spirit but lacking in size. The season started off with a bang with Orono trouncing Howard Lake 20 to 0 in a non-conference game. Then we went on to our first conference game and beat Norwood 17 to 13. Offensively we dominated the game but we missed many chances to score. Orono's first big win of the season was the victory over Waconia 20 to 0. The team as a whole worked well together on both offense and defense. Coach Pesonen commented that it was the best game ever played by an Orono team since football started here. After this victory, Orono continued on its winning streak by edging out Watertown 12 to 6. This game was played in 85° weather and both teams wilted after the first half. This four-game winning streak was snapped off abruptly when the Spartans ran up against a stone wall, namely, Shakopee. This game was by far the poorest played game of the season with the Shakopee line out-charging us all through the battle. Orono's homecoming game was played with Chaska. The Spartans came out on top very decisively with a 39 to 0 score. After homecoming, the Sparton eleven was upset when Bloomington jumped to an 18 point lead and went on to win 18 to 6. In the last game of the season, the Orono team put on an offensive fireworks that caught the Valley Conference Champions, University High, completely off guard. Wide holes were opened up in the U-High line by Turnham, Dieson, and Kirsch. Leonard Larson intercepted two passes that clinched the victory for Orono. All during the season the seniors came through very well. The graduating players are Garland Albers, Leonard Larson, Gary White, Dale Turnham, George Myers, Peter Raffety, Roger Dieson, and Ron Lepowsky. The reserves also came through in grand style. Three Spartans were chosen all-conference. These were Garland Albers, R. H. Peterson, and Dale Turnham. S Team Back Row: K. loney, J. Rockvam, B. Willis. D. McDonald. G. Hopf, R. Not . I. Siverson.
