Main Caravan visited such places as Alamos and San Carlos. The students welcomed the opportunity to sunbathe on the warm beaches and visit neighboring towns. Another group went to Caborca and did a variety of exciting things. The MexicofGuada.lajara trip was a fun trip, and the students went to see everything from museums to pyramids. To the North, in Utah, students rafted down part of the Green River. Caravan was welcomed and enjoyed by all. f4BOR,f',q y a EALETERZA' mr .f skgr' lt, ig n . .-----t- - 1 . xs'vfi i'V'fi 3, V Z 5 1980 gg W - isuji gfffv X -ah -- s. i f M - feae ., ' f . , , U xx X - I Y 'xxx . . . ready to go? If SURVIVAL - 1980-81 The survival program has had a very successful yearg 40 students went through beginning survival and 16 students went through advanced survival. Having endured severe winter storms the past few years, the weather was especially cooperative for the successful completion of the advanced programg many weekend projects were undertaken. Mr. Don Sargent, new faculty member this year, has been a fine addition to the program. He was responsible for giving the survival truck a much needed, new look. ,, 4 4 Overnight State Cookout at Kiva fi Z fi Fine Arts Festival The Fine Arts Festival has always been the most welcomed event of the year. This year many workshop leaders returned to Orme to share their talents with the students. Some new faces joined the artists and were received warmly, and they plan to return again next year. The atmosphere during this week was productive but peaceful! Workshop leaders, teachers and students enjoyed the spirit of the week and the break from classes that it offered. This year, the team competed on a level with the top class B schools and even a class AA school. The starting backfield included three seniors, who gained many yards grmxid through large offensive holes. The blocking, lead by Dave Lapkin and Mike Erlin had other teams looking for a way to stop it. During all the games, Camp Verde Lake Havasu adjustments along the line in blocking were the reason for 0rme's success. grozniirrrnd The awards this year went to senior Todd Los Banos - offensive back, Beam, ' Judson Dave Lapkin - defensive back, junior Mike Erlin - Coach's Award, senior Scott Wentz - Most Improved. f Q.. . ,, y W .. -:Q ' r ,NLMV ' wt . ,. s 'X ' ' 2? fgx V rn v ' me Q l' Junior Varsity: Front Row: A. Volleyball The volleyball team established its goals early in the season and then began the task of accomplishing them. After four independent league wins and two close losses to Mayer, Orme reached its first goal. In, what Coach Rowe described asg some of the finest high school volleyball I've seen, . Orme defeated Camp Verde in three games. Having reached their first goal, the Warriors prepared for the state volleyball tournament, the second item on their list. Orme lost a hard-fought match to Judson which saw the Warriors fight back repeatedly on to fall two points short. The Warriors showed the pride that had been built up during the season and rallied to finish 3rd in the tournament. Coach Rowe summed up the season by sayingg Our athletes were stronger and better prepared physically than anyone we faced. They earned every victory through their willingness to work together and sacrifice for each other. They were a team in every sense of the word. H-Q-gi Cross Countr The cross country team hit hard by graduation and injuries, nonetheless improved dramatically over the course of the season. Season highlights included an early-season victory over Superior High School, strong races at home against Scottsdale Christian and Southwest Indian, and participa- tion in the giant 18,000 peoplej Phoenix 10 kilometer run. Leading the pack all season was sophomore Norris Coit. Nor- ris's hard work earned him the Coach's Award. Seniors Allan Hilton, Dale Parker and Shinichi Manaka performed well all season, their graduation will leave a large vacuum in the starting lineup. Second year runner Bill Ames improved steadily all year and will be a leader as a senior. The returning juniors, plus younger runners like sophomore Coll Nichol- son and Tim Rowe, an eighth grader with enormous potential, will form the nucleus of next year's squad. Junior Terri Beeson led the girls team all season, and won the Coach's Award. Cross country, a sport which requires internal motivation and hard work with few accolades, shows promise for continued strength in the years ahead. - x : 43 'tail 'Q I' K.: ,K A v l if if ff i. Boys Basketball The 1980-81 season was one of unknowns . The Warriors were one of the youngest varsity basketball teams, having only one senior, four juniors, 3 sophomores and a freshman. However, as the year progressed the team matured, working hard together to achieve, what turned out to be a successful, satisfying year. i Q3 Sink it, Mark . . 12 J.V. There are many fine students who participate in the program, and some have gained national recognition during and after their years at Orme. With the help of many students and parents, next year students will have the use of a new rodeo arena.. It wasn't an easy taskg find a first year student and ask. They'll say it's taking too long, but what do they know about long. They haven't through eighteen Orme years gone, some of it was splended, some of it abuse, but for all of it I can find a useg I would like to tell you more, but there is much too much to be said, and if I tried to tell it all I would soon find myself deadg one single memory is worth a thousand words. The people here, well some are good, some the worst, some the best, and then as always there is just the rest, but I know I've encountered it all. I'm sure there's better places and places I'd rather be, but you can't put a price tag on what Orme has done for me. Love won't take second best. Heartache and pain won't last like old habits do. Catch up to your past before it catches up with you. Your dreams are not what they were, your heart dances to a different tune. I won't forget my word, I'll remember to remember too. Your pride will overlook your lesson, when you fall. Leave no stone unturned, don't let it slip beyond recall. Love starts to last when you do the things that you neglected to do. Forever your haunting past will blind you to love. And so I'll remember Orme with its good times and its bad. The years will pass, but not a day will go by. You can get out of life what you put into it, and so I begin my endless journey to lose and gain.
