Mexico City and Guadalahara Trip. l The Backpacking Trip iNew Mexico! Mexlco Homestay iCaborcaj. Caravanis always an exciting time in the Orme School year. This event takes place during each spring term. It is a 10 day outing. This past caravan of 1979, six different trips were offered to the students. The traditional trip, known as Main Caravan headed up north to pay a visit to Zion National park in southern Utah. This trip was lead by Buck Hart. lt was an enjoyable excursion and the students involved returned to school with many thrilling stories! The Colorado river trips were lead by Bob Miller and Jack Rowe. This group drove up to the rim of the Grand Canyon at which point they hiked down the rim to reach the wild rapids of the Colorado. As one student explained I thought I was part of a National Geographic picture. The Gem Trails trip headed south to explorethe old mines of Arizona. This trip was under the supervision of the Garst's and the Davis's. The group learned alot about the southern part of Arizona. Gem Trails reached as far south as Bisbee, Arizona, one of the famous old mining towns, filled with many exciting sights. Merri Steltzer took a smaller group down to Mexico City and Guadalajara. Our Students enjoyed this thoroughly. It gave many students a different view and understanding of how people in other parts of the world live. One of the participants exclaimed lt was absolutely beautiful! ' The Backpacking caravan headed over to New Mexico. This was a tiring experience for those involved. Stu Bolton and Marge Edwards were the instructors of this outing. It was 10 long days of hiking. When these students returned, they were exhausted, but once they returned we heard many interesting stories about their experience. The sixth trip took a bus load of students down to a small village in Mexico, Caborca, where the participants were to live with a Mexican family during their caravan experience. The Alvarez's were in charge of this trip. It was a most exciting trip and an entirely different culture was experienced. l 9
