A truly unique One! Every September finds new and returning students coming from throughout the United States and overseas to add a new chapter to their lives. In joining the Orme Community, located in the high desert of central Arizona, we have the opportunity to interact and learn from our varied backgrounds. Orme is the nucleus from which we periodically depart to explore the Southwest and Mexico. Our first camping endeavor is the Fall Outing to the high country of the Verde Flim. In the spring we participate in Caravan . We either venture south to visit our fabulous neighbor, Mexico, or north into the spectacular Indian Country of the 4-corners area. One' of the special alternatives is a white-water rafting trip down the Colorado River. During the year our athletic and rodeo teams travel widely to compete all over the state. Periodic field trips, free weekends and shopping sprees keep our transportation center a hub of activity. Orme draws it share of visitors, too. Throughout the year, interesting people from different parts of the world come to the campus. Whether they be guest artists for the Fine Arts Festival, Board of Trustee members attending meetings or speakers and per- formers at the Friday Night Programg they bring the outside world to our community. Our Key Club members are constantly hosting prospective students and their parents. All of this, coupled with the big Parents' Day at Thanksgiving makes Orme an interesting and exciting part of the mainstream of American life. fl 56' kukhihx I WI I 0 I I . HMP I SPRING Main Caravan found students and faculty members trucking through Sonora, Mexico, learning about our neighbors while camping out in the countryside. Names such as Kino Bay, Guaymas, Alamos and Magdelena, once only dots on a map, became reality and highlighted visits for everyone. Two other groups traveled southward - Caborca Homestay learned the Mexican way of life first hand rather than from a textbook. Traveling to Guadalajara and Mexico City by train, another group toured ancient pyramids and major points of interest in these fascinating cities. Souveniors, photographs and memories all cleared customs nicely on returning home through Nogales, Mexico. Regular classes are suspended and classrooms are transformed into workshop areas. We look forward with great anticipation to welcoming our returning workshop leaders who so generously share with us their artistic expertise. Days are filled exploring the creative process in each medium, the evenings set aside for lectures and performances. Visiting informally with the workshop leaders and viewing the extensive art exhibit of contemopary southwest artist displayed in the Phillips Library, adds a new dimension to our lives. . ,, W . Coej As one of the members of the Orme Family, I really like Orme, and Orme-life, for it's highly organized and educative. It is a place where students are trained for tomorrow's society, and for their future life, as a school should be. But with all its goodness and greatness, it can't be as my own family, who I miss very much. I'm sure that I would enjoy my life at Orme a lot more if I had them near me. But anyway, I hope success, development and progress for the Orme School and its faculty and staff and the people who will come to Orme after us, to teach or to be taught. , D -- rv , ' ' - 4 I no f Il 9 ' W f ff'- , 'L,-1f,J-lff?JfSf T'Q i :'L-130-g, 'L.ll-Jffo-f'U,Mf Cf'Ld7flf GMU' ' CAjw,2!T'QJJJqI,L,, 'C.,.:,-2-:!o5f-1l!,Jt'g:f:1j,.q K I!!! Youth of today are out for a quick pleasure or a quick high. They want quick results. But things don't work that way-in football or in the classroom. Just saying you want a good academic record does not make it a reality. You must plan and set goals. This past season began at 5:30 a.m. back in early September with inexperienced and weak players. But we set goals. Our weakness cost us a ballgame against Bagdad and we don't plan to have that happen again. We are now conditioning for next season, and this means a sacrifice of free time. There were three characteristics of the 78 team. Determination is one. This showed in both defeat at Gila Bend in our 13-6 loss and in our 12-9 come-from-behind victory over Judson in unbelievable weather. Enthusiasm is another characteristic. I have never been associated with a team with more enthusiasm than that displayed by our students, faculty, and team in our game and pregame activities with Judson. And the third characteristic is loyalty. This one I can not describe, for you would have to be in the locker room in both defeat and victory to see what I call loyalty to team members and coaches that was shown by all. You don't have these characteristics by just talking about them. They are created. Created by working together, by a caring attitude, and by having a desire to excell. Everything in life depends on them-not just football or academics. The team, I know, have many memories, but the greatest moment for me was when two men met me outside our locker room in Camp Verde and said, Coach, your team showed more disciplining and character th an any team we have seen come in here. That is what athletics is all about. We didn't have to talk about it, they saw it. - Coach R. Miller ,A-2-Nan? . THREE PLAYERS VOTED After getting off to a slow start, the Varsity Volleyball team made a strong showing in the state finals. In a single-elimination tournament, Orme lost to PCDS in the semi-finals. PCDS went on to win the championship, but Orme did not have a chance to play the second place team, and so we had to settle for third. Coaches from the other teams were obviously impressed with the girls' performance, as they voted Michelle Fry, Jennifer Onnen and Lauren Lovett to the All-Tournament Team. The JV team showed marked improvement throughout the season. Several of its players were moved up to the varsity, including Donna Wilson, who was chosen Most Improved Player. The beginning survival students learn such arts as firemaking, shelterbuild- ing, and food foraging. Hikes and lectures on first aid and safety are included. Other aspects of the program include rappelling and rock climbing. At the end of the term, the survivalists take the final test. They spend 24 hours in complete solitude, free from food or bedroll. In the advanced survival program, the learning experience is continued, and skills such as orienteering are added. The solos are extended to 48 hours, sometimes even 72 hours. CHAPEL COMMITTEE SERVES OUR COMMUNITY Students at lunch fast for World Hunger. 86 Chapel Committee is a group of students, sponsored by Rev. and Mrs. Price, who plan and organize chapel services. The officers are: President, Mary Beth Winheim, Vice President, Bill Cordasco, Secretary- Treasurer, Beth Griffin, and Student Senate Representative, Phillip DeMartin. In an effort to make students aware of the problem of world hunger and their respon- sibility to help alleviate the problem, students participated in a lunch fast consisting of bread and water. For each participating student, the school donated a dollar to the hunger project. Over a hundred dollars was raised. The chapel also sponsors Goyatu Dido Dibasso, a girl from Marsabiti, Kenya. Beth reads a lesson. Chapel is held Sunday evenings and Wednesday mornings. Sunday chapel often includes choral music and guest speakers. The Wednesday morning services are organized entirely by students and often include student poetry readings, songs and personal thoughts. The Candlelight Service is one of the highlights of the year. Chapel is a major part of Orme Life, a calm, quiet time. The year's committee worked hard and successfully to make the services interesting and inspiring to the community. What kept the team from winning was the fact that it was young and inexperienced. The Warriors scored more points against East Fork Mission and San Pasqual than any other team. The team members made great sacrifices in scheduling early morning practice and vigorous afternoon work outs. Mark Christy and Wes Woolf were the team captains. Mark Christy was the only senior and the leading rebounder in school history. This year's team worked well, both independently and together. Junior doing some fancy dribbling. Mark wins the tip. After the first week of hard work outs, numerous girls decided that basketball just wasn't their sport and went into easier activities. The Junior-Varsity team practiced hard but complained they didn't have enough competition games. The Varsity team made it all the way to the state tournament that was held at Orme this year. They won the first game against East Fork and lost first place to the girls from San Pasqual, Yuma. Jan Shorty Hilton, Varsity Coach, was presented with a second place trophy. During the tournament, all coaches voted for All Tournament Team and Francie Kirkpatrick and Jennifer Onnen were named. All the girls deserved recognition for all their outstanding efforts. They clearly learn that a worthy and rewarding community life is achieved and sustained only through strong leader- ship of responsible citizens. Being a Prefect is one way to discharge this respon- slbllity. Prefects are those students that provide, assist and support the faculty, admin- istration and student sen- ate. In addition, it is the role of a Prefect to set an example for the student body in general. Prefects should be available to help in any area where the physical, moral or intellec- tual well being of the community or individual student is involved. 95 MARK HARNETT 7549 North 22nd Place Phoenix, Az. WILDERNESS TREK On Saturday, September 30th, faculty and students gathered in the barnyard with sleeping bags and other necessary camping equipment. The Fall Outing, an annual event of The Orme School, was about to begin. Students had the choice of riding horseback, riding in the back of a cattle truck, or hiking to the Double T Ranch, located southeast of the school. The activity offerings of the weekend included football, volleyball, riding, hiking, and rappelling. At the day's end, all gathered to participate in the long-time caravan tradition of singing around the campfire. The three day excursion ended with more friendships and a feeling of security and togetherness shared by student and faculty alike. Early morning was devoted to the end of the exam ordeal - English. Morning chapel followed. At the service, members of the community generously donated food for the needy. Then everyone's combined efforts went toward a complete cleanup of the campus. At noon parents began arriving for parent conferences and to attend the Book Fair held in Phillips Library. The Book Fair provides an opportunity for the parents to donate books to further enlarge the Phillips Library collection. Evening found everyone gathered in Founder's Hall to enjoy a Thanksgiving banquet with all the trimmings. Founder's was filled with an aura of the season's spirit as Orme's extended family ate and laughed together. After all were nicely stuffed, everyone moved on to the Horsecollar Theater to see the production of Agatha Christie's TEN LITTLE INDIANS directed by Randy Schulte. The Christmas dance was sponsored by the Sophomore Class and was held in the Commons Room. The holiday festivities began with a Christmas dinner for the entire Orme Community and guests. Then came the long-anticipated visit from Santa and this year he brought his special helper, Debby Mathis. Santa led the crowd in a few spirited stanzas of Jingle Bells g he then proceeded to the Christmas tree which had been cut and decorated by the senior class. Santa handed out gifts to the youngest members of the community. After the Christmas dinner the Chapel Committee and mixed choral groups presented the traditional candlelight service. At the close of the service, everyone had the opportunity to light an individual candle on the star. During the lighting of the star, the chorus led the congregation in a medley of Christmas Carols. After the service, students went to their advisors homes to feast on munchies. Students and faculty leave the world of academics for a week and immerse themselves completely in the arts. Days are filled with workshops, and programs are held nightly. Friday evening's program, the closing night, gives the community a taste of several different workshops. Although it was a wet, muddy week, spirit and morale made up for the weather. lt is a time for all to relax and learn a particular art form.
