FOUNDERS HALL HONORING THE FOUNDERS CHARLES HENRY ORME • MINNA VRANG ORME CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES DONALD S BURNS ARCHITECT BUSHNELL. JESSUP MURPHY » VAN DE WEGHE CONTRACTOR JOHNSON i SON Mr. Dick Jessup of Bushnell, Jessup, Murphy, and Van De Weghe in San Fran- cisco. L. A. Johnson and Son of Phoenix were contracted to build it. This is sig- nificant because this is the first major con- struction job on campus handled by an outside contractor. The design of the building incorporates the use of native stones, rough timber beams, and extensive use of glass. These materials are significant of Uncle Chick's love of nature and his straight forward character. Ground was broken in early September 1968 and the building was finished on May 11th. The students ate their first meal after caravan in the elegance of this beautiful new dining facility. FOUNDERS HALL FOUNDER'S HALL is a new dining room dedicated to Charles H. Orme and Minna Vrang Orme, the founders of the school. Mr. Orme (Uncle Chick was particularly concerned with the building of a new dining room at the time of his death on February 10, 1968. The school has been in great need of a new dining facility due to increased enrollment since the present main house was built. Edward F. Lowry, Jr., a Phoenix attorney and former summer counselor and faculty member of the School, assumed the leadership of a spontaneous drive to organize support for the memorial. The result was the establishment of Project Committees in some of the major metropolitan areas of the country. The Chairmen of these various Committees are John S. Wiester, Los Angeles; J. Harold Peterson, Jr., San Diego; Edward F. Lowry, Jr., Phoenix; Dr. Robert W. Jamplis, San Francisco; and Paul Harper, Houston. All of these individuals have been deeply committed to achieving this major School objective. - 6 -
