The climate down there was too hot for them, so they decided to move out here, 75 miles north and 3000 feet higher. Traveling just a short distance in those days was not a pleasure, even when the roads were fairly decent. The roads going north from Phoenix were as primitive as they could be, and when the Orme family had to bring all their belongings with them, one can imagine that the trip was a strenuous one. A usual resting place going north was Rock Springs, about 40 miles from Phoenix. From here they still had 35 miles to go. The journey up to the ranch was but the first of their tasks. When they ar- rived, they practically had to build the whole ranch. The barn had been erected several years before, but other buildings were needed. One of the major concerns of Uncle Chick and Aunt Minna was the school situation. They had both had a good education and could see that their children would need the same. But the schools were far off. The Ormes had three children of their own, their Mexican-American ranchhand had five, so they decided to get hold of a teacher who could live on the ranch and take care of grades 1 through 8. Seeing that other ranch- ers might be interested in sending their children to this school, they built the Adobe, serving as classroom and housing for the teacher. Now the school situation was more or less solved, but there were other problems which presented themselves. The Quarter Circle V Bar Ranch was located on the Ash Creek which gave - 2 - them some of the water they needed, but not enough. The location did however, make it possible to clear some fields and start growing hay, alfalfa, and other crops. But as the ranch ex- panded, the water situation - 3 - became more serious. It was actually not solved until a couple of years ago, when Uncle Chick finished maybe the greatest of all his projects — the irri- gation ditches. But despite water prob- lems, life went on in a typical western manner. What buildings and fencing they needed they constructed them- selves. ■ Neither telephone nor electricity was here when they first came, so Uncle Chick cut down the logs he needed and strung the lines about 8 miles with the help of people from the ranch. And this is the way in which most things have been done — that they do it themselves. This is partly what makes our school so unique. The other part is that the ranch brings the taste of western life into our daily life at the school. 4 DEDICATION . . WILLIAM S. HART, nicknamed Buck, is known for His quiet wit and unequaled sense of humor. People remember him as being the straw boss of caravans, the jolly Santa, cheer- ful bringer of evil hours, and generally the leader in the midst of strife. He participates enthusiastically in all activities, and is willing to bring new things to the school for the stu- dents' benefit. For example: the Horsecollar Concert Series, Fine Arts Festival, and other cultural programs. For all his outstanding qualities . . which make him an essential part of the Orme School . . the yearbook staff of 1969 dedicates Hoof- prints to William S. Hart, Jr. - 5 - FOUNDERS HALL HONORING THE FOUNDERS CHARLES HENRY ORME • MINNA VRANG ORME CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES DONALD S BURNS ARCHITECT BUSHNELL. JESSUP MURPHY VAN DE WEGHE CONTRACTOR JOHNSON i SON Mr. Dick Jessup of Bushnell, Jessup, Murphy, and Van De Weghe in San Fran- cisco. L. A. Johnson and Son of Phoenix were contracted to build it. This is sig- nificant because this is the first major con- struction job on campus handled by an outside contractor. The design of the building incorporates the use of native stones, rough timber beams, and extensive use of glass. These materials are significant of Uncle Chick's love of nature and his straight forward character. Ground was broken in early September 1968 and the building was finished on May 11th. The students ate their first meal after caravan in the elegance of this beautiful new dining facility. FOUNDERS HALL FOUNDER'S HALL is a new dining room dedicated to Charles H. Orme and Minna Vrang Orme, the founders of the school. Mr. Orme (Uncle Chick was particularly concerned with the building of a new dining room at the time of his death on February 10, 1968. The school has been in great need of a new dining facility due to increased enrollment since the present main house was built. Edward F. Lowry, Jr., a Phoenix attorney and former summer counselor and faculty member of the School, assumed the leadership of a spontaneous drive to organize support for the memorial. The result was the establishment of Project Committees in some of the major metropolitan areas of the country. The Chairmen of these various Committees are John S. Wiester, Los Angeles; J. Harold Peterson, Jr., San Diego; Edward F. Lowry, Jr., Phoenix; Dr. Robert W. Jamplis, San Francisco; and Paul Harper, Houston. All of these individuals have been deeply committed to achieving this major School objective. - 6 - .. and ift i Elizabethan Consort of Viols Kadimah Dance Theatre Jeffry Ronald Marlowe The Singers of Paris CONCERT SERIES 1968 69 The Splinters Richard Casper ON SUNDAY OCT. 27, 1968, Richard Casper, Pianist gave a piano recital in the Horsecollar Theater. I leave stepping down red-stone driveways onto falls' pale pavement. October lowers its eyes and waves its arms— a dying saint. Neighborhood filled with floating smoke and children — ash of leaves. Time before there was warmth of wet shoulders. Sun Sun up over my back crawled across the sky — a child time. All this fall I love you you whose name I cannot speak. Yes, Yes you who I may know. GEORGE BALL Flowers can speak of their wind-blown friend. It was written with a last drop on the sagging petals. Earth can cry no more; her tears were rivered away to be another flower's joy. Sorrow left on bare pages of her lonely arms, the motherless tree can grieve for lost children, raked into a fire to give birth to grey powder. Ancient life writes in stone, of a sky too happy to weep, or of a radiant heaven too long forgotten. My lifeless bones cannot offer scriptures to preach of a memory. A crimson balloon will not exhale the misery. And twenty-six pieces of ivory cannot play the loss. —ROBYNN RIDLEY - 55 - Ormedians Back: Steve Richards, Miles Wood, Alice Buhler, Gina Weller, Duncan McClure, Ann McDowell, Bruce Peterson, Cissy Rogers, Jim Moon, Mary Hopkins, Under: Bary Seigel, Cappy Offutt; missing: Tibby Jamplis, Jody Joy, Ricky Sherwood, Bill Harris. But from the moment when a movement of rebellion begins, suffering is seen as a collective experience. The malady experienced by a single man becomes a mass plague. TUCKER, Sr., the inventor and founder of the Tucker SNO-CAT Corporation, who was one of 13 children, was born in a log cabin on Jump-Off Joe Creek in 1892 near Grants Pass, Oregon. During his youth he walked to school through deep snow, and even at this early age he began working on different devices for transportation over snow which eventually led to the development of the world famed SNO-CAT. In the early twenties Mr. Tucker built several spiral driven machines and also experimented with rubber trach (idler wheel) ma- chines, but had very little success with the principles in- volved. The rubber froze and stretched out of shape, the boggie (idler) wheels would freeze solid and the tracks would come off on side hills. After these experiences Mr. Tucker realized that unless he could come upwith a com- pletely different system, he would never achieve his desire to build a vehicle to travel over deep, soft snow with a min- imum amount of mechanical trouble and expense. MR. TUCKER WORKED in Los Angeles on models, perfecting the SNO-CAT idea. He then moved to Grass Valley, California, where the first production line was establish- ed. This successful venture was terminated by a move to Medford, Oregon, determined by Mr. Tucker’s long-expressed desire to return to the Rogue River Valley. Mr. Tucker spent 50 years in building and improving his snow machines, and his firm is recognized as the oldest successful manufacturer of snow vehicles in the world.
