1 J J J J .1 J J J J J J 3 J DEDICATION Artist, teacher, and an unforgettable human being with the gift of graciousness and warmth, DOROTHY SWAIN LEWIS possesses the wisdom which enlivens and refines. In her presence we find ourselves again and again reaching beyond self-imposed limi- tations, discarding the shoddy and pretentious, and growing in knowledge and taste. Dot, as she is affectionately called by everyone, radiates a keen inner curiosity that suggests a sense of knowing. Through her own enthusiasm and interest, she infuses subject matter with the freshness and excitement that inspii’e learning. Secretly, it must be admitted, Dot relishes being a thorn in the flesh of those of us who cling complacently to unexamined or merely comfortable views. Her years of studying and teaching have taught her how much there is still to be learned and those who do not feel similarly de- termined must suffer her pricks. Nor has she any patience with the cynicism of the day. To her nothing is more wasteful of the beauty and richness of life - and who are we to be skeptical of the sensitive and critical eye of the artist, whose whole purpose is to see arid interpret true things! Although Dot scorns formalized philosophy because she prefers actions to words, her life bespeaks a deep love of learning and a solid respect for knowledge and profession- al skills. Perhaps she is an artist because she has to be one, seeing in art the greatest challenge to mind and spirit; surely she is a teacher because she believes unreservedly in the promise of youth and in the fullness of the truly cultured Hfe. The record of Dot's contributions to the school during the eleven years she and her son Chig have been members of the community leaves most of us breathless. As head of the art department she conducts courses in studio art and art history; she teaches modern history as well and has taught, at one time or another in every subject field ex- cept foreign language. She originally organized the riding program and presently directs the drill team and the newly formed English riding group. In the past she has taught fly- ing (and if a core of eager boys has its way, will do so again). The portraits of the Orme family are her work, as are the myriad sketches and drawings which herald our events and enhance our programs. Nothing is more remarkable in Dot than her gift for friendship and the ease with which she does things for others. Somehow she is thoughtful without ever having to think about it. At the same time she possesses a forward-looking quality that attracts young people to her. Her advice and her teaching are direct and honest, yet always reassuring to budding hopes and dreams, always motivated by the desire to help us be the best that we can become. Because her own concerns point outward and beyond the trivial, there can be no pettiness in her presence. Genuine courtesy and an abiding respect for the worth of the individual grace all that she does. To Dot, then, who has given so much to us, we dedicate our book.
