Louisa Jamison - Julie Scott Cover Design Winifred Koch Written material . Ann Brownell Faculty Advisor DEDICATION Dick Jessup came to the ranch in 1935 as a result of an asthmatic condition aggravated by the climate of his Long Island home. During the seven years he spent here at school, he developed a deep feeling for this western country and a strong, close friendship with the Orme family. When he left the Ranch School in 19i|2, to continue his schooling. University training at Princeton and Pratt Institute, he left part of his heart at the Quarter Circle V Bar Ranch. Having received his Architectural degree, he re- turned several years later and for three summers assisted with the construction of school buildings under the di- rection of John Carl Warnecke of San Francisco. Last year at the time of Mort's tragic death, Dick was in the process of pulling up roots in New York to move to San Francisco as an assistant to Mr. Warnecke. A long distance telephone call from Uncle Chick brought him immediately out to the ranch where he brought con- solation and friendship to the family as well as a com- petent mind and willing hands to build the proposed Morton Vrang Orme Memorial Chapel. No one but Dick could have built a chapel so expressive of the man to whom it is dedicated and of the land in which he lived. In a short time, Dick renewed old friendships and made many more. He became a familiar and well-liked mem- ber of the community. As the library grew to completion and the chapel took definite form, so did the friendship between Dick and Lyn. The night that Charlie announced their engagement was one of the happiest occasions of the year. To this man whose presence and help here at the ranch has meant so much, we sincerely dedicate this book. TWG Ofioes Aunt Minna and Uncle Chick v. Riley Wilson Route 2, Box 1 70 Scottsdale, Arizona SEVENTH GRADE THE NEW LIBRARY The rapid growth of the school over the last ten years has brought the need for increased library facilities. This need was met this past year with the construction of a beautiful new library building. Generous gifts given by Mr. Gordon Pettit and Mr. Fowler Me Cormick have helped make this possible. Mr, Pettit also gave the school a great num- ber of Southwest Indian artifacts which inspired us all with the idea of incorporating a museum of Southwest history into the li- brary. The school's plan for gradually filling the library with books has been given a great lift by financial assistance from students, teachers and friends of the ranch. Although a portion of the library building has been in use since the second semester of this year for studyhall purposes, much work in cataloguing books and filling the stacks must be done in order that our library bring its full influ- ence to bear upon our school life. THE MORTON VRANG ORME MEMORIAL CHAPEL Prom the day Dick Jessup first surveyed Vesper Hill, construction of the Chapel became a focal point of student interest. To those who knew Mort, it prom- ised the fulfillment of a lasting tribute to a man whose death created a great loss. Students devoted work periods and free time to help with construction. Individuals and classes contributed financially and the student body as a whole cooperated in raising funds at vespers and the Easter rodeo. The Chapel thus became a vital and absorbing part of the school life. On the day the great beams were anchored over the rock buttresses, students and adults spontaneously gathered from all over the Ranch to watch with awe and wonder. The dedication and cornerstone-laying ceremony captured the community's spirit with rev- erent interest. In the intricate stone and rock work so expertly layed by Glynn Despain, in the huge beams pointed heavenward as hands in prayer, the Chapel expresses the personality and heart of the man in whose mem- ory it was built. It has become a symbol through which Mort's friends have been able to channel their devotion into a visible expression. as an accomplished author and editor but we at the ranch are especially privileged to know him as a friend and spiritual leader. We are all grateful for his help in working on the chapel committee, in giving his val- uable time to our vesper program, and in- cluding us in his busy Easter schedule. Our Varsity team made a better showing this year than ever before. With the backing of our fine school spirit and terrific coaching, we won 5 out of the 6 games we played. This is definitely one of the best teams we have ever had and certainly one to be proud of. Some of the games were smashing victories and others were close ones but through them all prevailed the wonderful spirit of teamplay which carried our boys to the top. Soon after practice began, the 15 individuals drawn by a common goal, united to form a compact, well-work- ing team. The reward of this coop- eration and hard work was success when, after a shaky start, the girls defeated Prescott to begin an ex- citing and most challenging season. To Stan Gloss, the team is greatly indebted, for few coaches could have tolerated the last half spurts which won the games, or in a few cases narrowly missed by three or four points. If the record indi- cates the success of a team, the girls rank among the best and if enthusiasm indicates success, the girls rank higher than ever before.
