Upper Grade Activities Fifth and Sixth Grades The school year of 1950-51 opened September 4, 1950. The fifth grade enrollment was ten. Hartley Briggle entered from Bancroft in Sioux Falls, and Judy Peterson from the Reynolds School. Lee Wayne Schoeberl moved to the Franklin vicinity in February. Grade six opened with thirteen students, including Richard Peterson from the Reynolds School. Joyce Kelley entered this class in February from Pleasant View School, District 105, Minnehaha County, making an enrollment of fourteen. The sixth grade planned and gave a Halloween party for the fifth grade on October 31st, with a return party by the fifth grade on Valentine’s Day. On November 3rd, the annual school carnival was held. Candidates for Prince and Princess were Mary Ann Morris and Richard Peterson from the sixth grade. At Christmas, our room presented a chorus number for the tableau, “The Holy Child.” The annual spring activities included the county Y. C. L. chorus in Madison, South Dakota, which the grade pupils always attend, the county spelling contest in which eligible room members participate, and the county Y. C. L. convention. Grade Night concluded the grade school activities with a program and the presentation of awards earned during the year. Seventh and Eighth Grades The seventh and eighth grade activities during the school year 1950-51 included a Halloween party planned and given by the eighth grade. Games were played and lunch was served by the eighth graders. The seventh graders entertained the eighth graders at a Valentine party. Games were played and valentines were distributed. Lunch was served by the seventh graders. The seventh and eighth grade boys practiced basketball with the high school boys. They have played a few games, and participated in two tournaments. Track and tumbling were the activities which followed basketball. The seventh and eighth grade girls started basketball in November. Lois Miller coached them. They played a game with the high school girls, and one with the seventh and eighth grade boys. They also had tumbling following the close of the basketball season. Karen O’Connell, Frances Johnson, and Nancy Jo Kintigh were elected by the boys for grade cheerleaders. As Nancy Jo Kintigh left for her new home in Cherokee, Iowa, Marvelyn Johnson was elected to take her place. The annual seventh and eighth grade banquet was held at Orland on December 20, 1950, at 6:30 P. M. The banquet was prepared by the pupils of the seventh and eighth grades, and was supervised by Miss Hart. The eighth graders were seated, while the seventh graders served. The parents of the students, the faculty, and other guests were present. Entertainment was furnished during the meal by Nancy Kintigh, Gail Holter, Duane Kappenman, Colleen Clancy, Ernestine Strom, and Lois Anderson. 26
