“AKING WINNERS " She was a real boost to the program, " Turpin commented on the young lady from Seat- tle, Washington. " She was easily the most outstanding talent available to colleges in the Northwest in 1987. " Veterans of the team includ- ed junior Monique Munson and sisters Karin and Kristen Nakano. Munsen combined a nurs- ing major with her athletic program and was able to maintain both with equally great skill. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Monique attended high school in Sacramento, California be- fore arriving in Corvallis. The Nakano sisters from Boise, Idaho both had a great deal to do with the strong showing of OSU. Both ex- celled on the bars, with Kar- in ' s bars routine at San Jose State making the OSU all- time top 10 for the event. The two were high achievers in the area of academics receiving 3.89 and 3.95 GPAs respec- tively. Jim Turpin, voted as the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year was very pleased with the efforts of the team. " I just have a feeling about this team, " he said. " They are physically and mentally tough and they know what it takes to get the job done. " Having been the OSU gym- nastics coach for three years, Turpin claimed that he had not felt as confident about a team as he did of this one in his 20 years of coaching. " They didn ' t have crazy ex- pectations, " he noted. " They worked within realistic goals. As long as you are working within your limits, you should be able to go out and perform well. " Their seventh place finish at the NCAA championships was as close to Turpin ' s goals as they could get. " This is not the same team that went to nationals last year in any way, shape or form, " Turpin said. " We ' ve rewritten the record book and those who were there last year have learned from the experi- ence. " Now that the team had come so close to achieving the aims that had been set for them at the beginning of the season, what next? " The recognition for Or4 egon State is outstanding,! Turpin announced. " We knowl where we are, where we ' ve! been and where we ' re going.I To have this confidence nowj how could you ask for more?*! Look forward to a new defi-| nition of perfection.
