4,876-4,875: Women bowlers strike out! Keg!er is derived from the Creek kegel which means ninepin. Sportsmen added an extra pin and allowed women to play. Now the female gender outnumbers the male participants in the game. Male supremacy doesn't hold on the lanes. The OSU women's club competed in the same manner as the men with qualifying members of the club travelling to tournaments. OSU finished first in the ACU-I tournament and fell one pin short of Boise State and the regional championship when the team could come up with but 4,875 pins to Boise State's 4,876. □above, Beth Taylor finds joy in the sport, □tower left, till Uselman was the top bowler of the OSU club with a 180 average, □tower right. Keglers bowl io second in league Bowling originated through religious practices during medieval times. Little did the originators figure that their actions would develop into one of the largest participation sports today. Participation at Oregon State finds various levels and the men's bowling team provided competition for keglers with contesting desires. The bowling squad is comprised of the men with the top ten averages while competing in the Varsity League of the bowling club. The travelling team participated in the Oregon Collegiate Bowling League and placed second in the division. The squad also finished second in the ACUI Regional Tournament in Pullman, VVA. Karl Naake topped the Beaver bowlers with a 194 average in the Oregon Collegiate Bowling League. West Graves led the Varsity League with a 191 average. 232 □above left, A strike in motion. Oars and shells with female touch Ben Hur learned lo row while working for the Italian government nearly 2,000 years ago. The technique of oarsmanship might have changed a bit over the years; the people participating certainly have. Women have even adopted the activity as a sport. The women's crew team didn't work on any galleys, but participated in shells and sculls against women from other colleges on the West Coast. Over 20 OSU women participated in such events as eight-oar and four-oar rowing, and single and double sculling. Practice continues throughout the fall and winter. The season begins in the spring. This season culminated with the West Coast Women's Championship Regatta in Oakland, CA., in May. □above left.
